Be it known 'that I, WARREN Mo- ARTHUR, Jr., a citizen of the United States` residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,.have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tubular Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
4This invention relates to that class of tubular lanterns which are provided above the globe with a globe holder which is movable up and down in the top portion of the lantern and which when lowered upon the globe holds the latter in its normal position, and when raised releases the globe so that it canv be manipulated for giving access to the burner and for other purposes.
The object of` this invention is to produce a lantern of this general character in which a short globe is used, a globe which has the form, practically, of thelwer large lportion of an ordinary tubularlantern globe and does not contain the upper contracted portion, so that the globe holderis compara.- tively long while the globe is short and of' .comparatively largevdiameter at the top, whereby several important advantages' are secured, as willappear from the following description.

The globe is comparatively short and large in diameter, having approximately the shape of the lower large portion releasably -on the of an ordinary tubular lantern globe without the lupper contracted portion, so that the globe has practicallythe diameter at the top which it has at the bottom. The lower portion 17 ofthe globe'holder flares downwardly and is provided with bifurcated guides 18 by which lit is guided onV the tubes. The upper approximately straight or cylindrical portion 19 of the 'globe holder is arranged within the inner wall of the top E, which wall is separated from the outer' wall by an annular passage 20, Fig. 4, Y'through which the air enters thetubes. The up and down movement of the globe holder is best effected by a transverse lifter shaft Q1 which is journaled in bearings 22, 23, on
the tubes and providedatone cnd with a lever '24. 'This' l,shaft passes transversely thrugh the, globe holder which is provided on each side with a horizontal slot 25, Fig. 2,v and the relation of the shaft, lever and slots is such that when the lever is turned represented in Figs. 1 and 2, the shaft isadjacent to the forward end of the slot and beyond the dea d center and holds the globe holder firmly down on the globe and the latter on the globe plate and the globe plate on the air chamber, thereby holding these parts tightly against each other, while when the holder raised, lifigs. 4 and 5, the shaft is adjacent tothe rear end 'of the slot and holds the globe holder in its raised position. The lantern top Ev is provided with suitable openings 26 for the escape of the products of combustion and can be drawn out'of a single blankof sheet metal, if desired.
