Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW P. GAGATEK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in rail joints and has for its object the provision for a construction of this character which may be applied readily to the ad.- joining ends of rails and which will hold said rails securely in position.
The invention consists of the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification and in which,

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a rail 1 having a tongue receiving socket in one end of the web thereof, adapted to receive a tongue 2 formed on the end of the web of an adjoining rail 3. The tongue receiving socket is provided with interlocking enlargements adapted to receive corresponding enlargements 4t and 5 formed on tongue 2. At its outer end, the tongue receiving socket is flared as indicated at 6 and the corresponding portion of tongue 2 is formed to fit snugly within this flared portion, so as to reinforce the connection between the tongue 2 and the web portion of rail 3. A chair member is designed to fit over the joint thus formed between the two rails, said chair member comprising a base plate 7 having integral upstanding flanges 8 shaped to embrace and fit over the base portions and web of the adjoining ends of rails l and 3. These flanges 8 are connected With base plate 7 by means of bracing webs 9 which are formed integrally with said flanges and base portions. The base portion 7 is also perforated for the reception of suitable spikes or bolts 10 for securing said base portion to the ordinary railway ties 1.1, as indicated. In use, the chair member is first slipped over the end of one of the rails to be joined, far enough to expose the tongue or the socket therein, and then the tongue and socket are engaged with each other. After this has been accomplished, the chair member may be readily slipped over the joint thus formed as indicated in Fig. 1, and secured in position on the railway ties by means of spikes or bolts 10. With the chair member in position, it will be observed, that it is impossible to disengage the ends of the rails, since tongue 2 can be removed from its socket only by lateral movement between the ends of the rails, and such movement is prevented by the chair member. The specific form of construction illustrated will be found to be of durable construction and highly eflicient in use.
\Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred construction for carrying my invention into effect, the same is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, there fore, do not Wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A.rail joint comprising a rail having a socket in one end of the web thereof, said socket being downwardly and upwardly enlarged at its outer end, having circular recesses in its sides adjacent the enlargements thereof, circular recesses in its upper and lower sides at its inner end, said lower and upper sides having horizontally disposed walls between said circular recesses, a rail having; a tongue projecting from the Web name to this specification in the presence thereof, extended into and shaped to of two subscribing Witnesses. snugly fit said socket; and a ohalr lncasing the end portions of the Webs and flanges of ANDREW GAGATEK' 5 said rails forming a rigid connection he- Witnesses:
