To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM B. WYKOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DoorLocks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in door locks particularly to that type of locks wherein the locking action is secured by preventing the operation of the latch by means of a knob.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and etlicient mechanism, whereby one of the knobs may be rendered inoperative without interfering with the ordinary operation of the other knob and to provide key actuated means of a simple and effective nature, whereby the latch may be operated from the side provided with the in operative knob.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the embodiment of the invention illus trated a casing is shown comprising an outer face plate 1 adapted to be secured to the outer face of the door and which may be of any suitable shape or design. As shown the outer edge of the face plate is provided with a right angular flange 2 adapted to be engaged and to be set into the edge of the door to which the lock is to be applied and to be secured by a suitable fastening device.
Secured to the rear side of the face plate 1 and spaced a suitable distance therefrom is a back or inner plate 3 on the upper edge of which is formed an inwardly projecting spacing flange 4 while the lower edge is pro vided with projecting spacing flanges 5. This back plate 3 may be secured to the face plate in any suitable manner.
A latch 6 is slidably mounted in the casing and is adapted to work through a slot 7 formed in the flange 2 of the front plate and to project a suitable distance beyond the outer face of said flange to engage a striking plate and keeper arranged on the outer casing and which it is not deemed necessary to show. This latch 6 is preferably provided with a reduced stem 8 which is housed within the casing and has a longitudinally disposed slot 9 formed therein which is adapted to engage a rectangular pin or lug 10 on the bearing block or plate 11. which projects fro-1n the inner side of the face plate.
A latch operating pin 12 projects laterally from the inner end of the stem 8 on one face thereof and a latch operating lug 13 projects downwardly from the lower edge of said stem in a plane at right angles to that occupied by pin 12.
A latch projecting spring 15 is mounted on a stud 1 1 which projects from the inner face of the face plate 1. This spring is preferably of substantially inverted V-shape and one end thereof is engaged with a shoulder or offset portion formed on the latch (3, while the other end is engaged with the end of the block 11.
Latch operating levers 17 and 18 are pivotally mounted on a stud 16 which projects from the inner side of the face plate and each of said levers is provided with an operating lug 19 which is offset from the head of the pivotal end of its lever and forms a shoulder 20, with which is adapted to be engaged lever actuating mechanism hereinafter described. The lever 17 is provided with a downwardly projecting tapered extension or arm 21 which is adapted to be engaged at its lower end with the latch operating pin 12 on the inner end of the stem 8 of the latch 6. A stud 22 projects inwardly from the inner face of the lever 17 and is adapted to be engaged by the notched lower end of the lever 18, whereby the movement of said lever is communicated to the latch stem through the extension 21, thus providing for the retraction of the latch by the lever 18 and its operating mechanism.

On the inner end of the spindle 23 is secured a latch operating hub 25 which is preferably of substantially semi.- circular form and has a lever operating lug 26 projecting from its lower corner which will engage beneath the shoulder 20 of the latch operating lever 17 when the hub is turned in one direction by its spindle and knob thereby rocking said lever rearwardly and causing the lower extended end thereof to engage the pin 12 on the stem of the shank of the latch 6, thus retracting said latch. A cam operating member 27 is provided on the upper portion of the hub 25 and when the knob and stem. are turned in the opposite direction said member is brought into engagement with the upper portion of the lug 19 of the lever 17 thereby rocking the lever in the same direction as when rocked by the lug 26. Thus it will be seen that the latch may be retracted by the knob when turned in either direction.
lievolubly mounted in the front or face plate of the block is an outer knob spindle 28 and to the outer end of which is secured the outer door knob 29. A lever operating hub 30 is mounted on the inner end of the spindle 28 and is similar in con struction to the hub 25 of the inner hub spindle and has a. lever engaging lug or ear 3.1 on its lower end and a cam member 32 on its upper end. The lug 31 is adapted to be brought into engagement with the shoulder 20 of the lever 18 thus providing for the operation of the lever when the knob turned in either direction. When the lever 18 is thus rocked by the operating devices on the hub 30, the notched lower end of said lever is brought into engagement with the stud 22 on the inner face of the lever 17, thus operating said lever independently of its own operating mechanism and causing it to retract the latch in the same manner as if actuated by the operating devices of the inn-{er door knob. It will thus be seen that the spin (lles of the inn-er and outer knobs and the operating devices carried thereby are capable of independent axial or rotary movement, whereby the latch may be independently operated through the connecting mechanism herein shown and described.
In the arrangement of the inner ends of the knob spindles for holding the operating hubs carried thereby in proper position for engagement with their respective latch operating levers, the inner end of the spindle of the outer knob is preferably provided with a cylindrical extension which is adapted to revolubly engage a bearing socket 341 formed in the adjacent side of the hub 25 carried by the spindle of the inner knob.
In order to prevent the retraction of the latch by the outer knob operating mechanism a suitable detent 35 is provided preferably in the form of a right angularly shaped bar, one arm 36 of which projects into the casing and into slidable engagement with the inner face of the plate 1.. The other arm 37 of the detent is placed in close sliding engagement with the inner face of the flange 2 of the face plate. This detent 35 is provided on its outer face at the junction of its two arms with a laterally projecting operating finger or lug 38 which extends in alinement with the arm 36 and projects through a suitable aperture 39 in the flange 2. The walls of this aperture 39 are preferably beveled to permit the engage ment of the lug 38 by the thumb or finger, whereby the detent may be moved up or down in the casing to bring it into or out of operative position. lVhen the detent is depressed or moved downwardly until the lug 38 is engaged with the lower .wall of the aperture 39, the free inner end of the horizontally disposed arm 36 is brought into engagement with the head or pivoted upper end of the outer knob latch operating lever 1.8 and. the projecting end of the lug 19 thereon, whereby the lever 18 is locked against movement by the operating devices on the hub 30 of the outer knob spindle. To hold the detent in adjusted position a plate spring 10 is secured at one end to the inner face of the plate 1 and is provided at its free end with a coiled or rounded bearing surface which bears against the inner side or edge of the arm 37 of the detent 35 and is adapted to engage upper and lower notches 41 and 41 formed in said arm and thereby yieldably hold the detent in adjusted position. The free detent engaging end of the spring being curved adapts it to be readily pushed back when the detent is moved into operative or inoperative position as described above. It will be noted that when the detent 35 is moved downwardly into operative position the horizontal locking arm 36 thereof engages only the latch operating lever of the outer knob, thus leaving the latch operating lever 17 of the inner knob free to be actuated by the movement of said inner knob and its op erating devices.
In order that the latch 6 may be retracted by a key from the outside of the door when the outer knob operating mechanism has been locked by the detent 35, a suitable key actuated latch retracting or operating mechanism 42 is provided and comprises a lock which consists of a casing 43 having oppositely disposed extensions 44 and a cylinder 45. The cylinder 45 is preferably composed of two semi-cylindrical sections and is rotatably mounted in the casing 43 being provided with a key receiving socket 46 having an outstanding finger 47 which projects through a slot 48 in the casing. This finger 47 is arranged in the path of the finger or lug 13 which depends from the latch bar 8 and is adapted to engage said lug 13 and retract the latch when the key is inserted in the socket 46 and turned in the proper direction by means soon to be described.
As illustrated in Figs. 13 and 14 of the drawings the extensions 44 are provided with a series of longitudinally arranged channels 49 and the cylinder is provided with registering channels 50 disposed in alinement with the channels 49. Cooperating pins 51 operate in the channels 49 and 50 and have coil springs 52 arranged between the rear ends thereof and end walls of the extensions 44, the end walls of these extensions are preferably formed by detachable caps 53 which fit over the ends of said extensions and have flanges 54 which engage grooves 55 in the upper and lower faces of the extensions 44. These caps 53 are removable to afford access to the pins and springs contained in the cylinder and its extensions. The extensions 44 are also provided with studs 56 which are designed to engage perforations 57 of the boxing for holding the lock in position. When a key is not in the socket 46 the pins 51 are forced inwardly by the springs 52 in which position the joints between them are out of alinement with the joint between the cylinder 45 and the casing 43 and the cylinder is thereby held against turning. On the insertion in the socket 46 of a suitable key shown at 46 in Fig. 13 the pins 51 are thereby forced backward against the tension of their springs until the joints between them aline with the joint between the cylinder and the casing and thereby permit said cylinder to be rotated. Thus it will be evident that if the proper key 46 is inserted in the cylinder 45, the turning of the key will rotate the cylinder and thus actuate the finger 47 which engages the lug 13 on the latch bar 8 and moves the latch inwardly or rearwardly thereby retracting it against the pressure of the spring 15 and independently of the knob actuated operating mechanism. The latch is held innormally project-ing posit-ion'by the pressure of the spring 15, and when the door is closed said latch will engage a keeper plate not shown secured to the adjacent portion of the door casing.
The spindle 23 of the inner knob 24 is provided with a series of threaded apertures 57, while the shank of the knob 24 is pro-- vided on opposite sides with threaded apertures 58 arranged at different distances from the end of the shank. A fastening screw 59 is adapted to be engaged with either of the apertures in the shank of knob 24 and one of the apertures in the spindle of the said knob, thus providing for a very fine adjustment of the inner knob. The knobs may be reversed and either used on the inside.
While the look here shown is in the form of a flush lock, it may be also made in other forms such as a mortise lock.
I claim as my invention:
1. A lock including a reciprocating latch, latch operating levers pivotally mounted at a point remote from said latch and which are operably engaged with said latch, knob spindles mounted to revolve independently in the lock, hubs arranged on said spindles and each adapted to be engaged with one of said levers to operate the same, whereby the latch is retracted, and a spring to project the latch.
2. A lock including a reciprocating latch having an inwardly projecting stem, pivotally mounted latch operating levers which are engaged with said stem, independently operated knob spindles revolubly mounted in said lock, lever actuating hubs carried by the inner ends of said spindles each adapted to engage and rock one of said latch retracting levers, and means to lock one of said spindles against operation.
3. In a lock of the class described, a casing, a latch slidably mounted therein, a stem formed on said latch and projecting into said casing, said stem having formed therein a guide slot, a bearing block in said casing to receive the stem of said latch, a guide lug on said block to engage said slot whereby the latch is held in position and guided in its movement, a latch retracting pin arranged on the inner end of said stem,
a spring to project said latch to an operative position, independently operated latch ret-i.'a ':ting levers pivotally mounted in said casing which are adapted to be engaged with the latch retracting pin on said shank, knob spindles revolubly mounted in said casin and means actuated by each of said spindles for operating one of said latch retracting levers.

In a door look, a casing, a latch slidably mounted in said casing, a spring to project said latch to an operative position, independently operated latch retracting levers pivotally mounted in said casing, inner and outer knob spindles mounted for independent operation in said casing, lever engaging devices carried by the inner ends of said spindles whereby said levers are independently operated by the inner and outer knob spindles to retract said latch, a slidably mounted detent to lock the latch retracting lever and mechanism of said outer knob spindle whereby the operation of the latch by the outer knob spindle is prevented and a key actuated lat-ch operating mechanism within the lock case, whereby said latch may be retracted by a key independently of the knob actuated oi ierating devices.
5. A look including a reciprocating latch, levers for operating said latch, said levers being engaged with said latch for moving it in one direction, knob spindles each provided with means for engaging and operating said levers, an L-shaped detentslidablv mounted and adapted for engagement with one of said levers to lock it against actuation, one arm of said detent having spaced notches therein, and a spring disposed in engagement with said notches to hold said detent in adjusted position.
6. A look including a casing having an aperture in its edge wall, a reciprocating latch, latch operating levers engaged with said latch for moving it in one direction, knob spindles provided with means for operating said levers, an L-shaped detent having one arm arranged to slide in a plane parallel with said edge wall of said casing and having a lug extending through the aperture in said wall, the other arm of said detent being movable into and out of the path of said lever on the sliding of said first mentioned arm in opposite directions.
7. A look including a casing having an aperture in its edge wall, a reciprocating latch, latch operating levers engaged with said latch for moving it in one direction, knob spindles provided with means for operating said levers, an L-shaped detent having one arm arranged to slide in a plane parallel with said edge Wall of said casing and having a lug extending through the aperture in said wall, the other arm of said detent being movable into and out of the path of said lever on the sliding of said first mentioned arm in opposite directions, and cooperating means on said casing and arm for holding said detent in adjusted position.
