ACETYLENE-GAS GENERATOR.
clear, and exact description of the inven-j tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in acetylene gas generators and particularly in the provision of means for feeding the carbid and providing automatic means whereby the carbid may be fed within the generator.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical central sectional view through an acetylene generator embodying the, features of our invention. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail in elevation of the hopper and the lever mechanism for closing the valve, and Fig. A is an enlarged view in elevation of the valve closing mechanism taken in a plane at right angles to the illustration shown in Fig. 3.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a gasometer mounted within the tank A and having a proper water seal and provided with a hinged lid A Mounted within said tank is a transverse partition C supported by legs O rising from the bottom of the tank and supported upon said partition is an open-ended cylindrical shell D which is fitted over an opening in the partition and afiording a means of communication between the space below said partition and the gasometer or chamber above. Mounted upon the partition are the legs E which support the hopper F, the lower tapering end of which has an exit opening F regu- Specification of Letters Patent.

lated by a transversely sliding valve F guided by the flanges F Said valve has a perforation Gr therein for the reception of the finger G which is integral with the rock shaft H, the latter being mounted in suitable bearings H projecting from the tapering portion of the hopper. Said shaft is bent at an angle at H and is pivotally connected to a pin I to which the lower end of the rod I is pivoted, which latter extends up through an open-ended tube I extending up through the hopper. One end of the portion of the arm which is pivoted to said rod is pivotally connected at J to a lever K which in turn is pivoted upon a pin K carthe hopper. A weight L is fastened to one end of said lever K and serves to normally hold the valve closed through the connections shown and described, said weight being adapted to be raised when the rod is depressed, thereby opening the valve and allowing carbid to fall through the shell D into the lower portion of the tank where it comes in contact With water, wherein the acetylene gas is generated. A service pipe, designated by letter M, extends through the wall of the tank and has a branching pipe N extending down into the portion of the tank below the partition, while an upwardly extending portion N of the pipe has a cylindrical portion N with perforations therein and through which the gas passes to the service pipe. A suitable residuum pipe, des ignated by letter 0, passes through the lower portion of the tank and extends up along adjacent to the tank and has its upper end open to the atmosphere.
In operation, assuming the gasometer is in a raised position by reason of the pressure of gas and as the gas is withdrawn through the service pipe and the gasometer lowers, as the top A comes in contact with the upper end of rod I, the latter will be depressed, causing the weight to be raised the shaft to be rocked the finger G, carried thereby, to be reciprocated operating the sliding valve to open it, allowing carbid to fall through the exit end of the hopper through the shell and into the lower portion of the tank. As the gas is generated and the pressure increases sufficient to overcome the weight of the gasometer, the latter will be raised with the gas and the weighted member will automatically .ried by the lug K secured to the wall of lltl cause the rod to return to its normal position and the valve will close, thus shutting off further feeding of the car-bid.
By the provision of an apparatus embodying the features of our invention, it will be noted that the valve is automatic in its action, being regulated positively and automatically, thereby forming an apparatus in which the supply of gas will be constantly maintained.
lVhat we claim to be new is An acetylene gas generator comprising a tank with a partition therein provided with an opening, an openended shell positioned about the marginal edge of said aperture and fastened to the upper surface of the partition, rods secured to said partition and extending above said shell, a carbid holder supported by said rods and provided with a tapering end extending into said shell, a alve controlling the exit end of said hopper, a rock shaft, rods depending from said hopper and in. which said shaft has a bearing, an arm projecting from said shaft and fastened to said valve, a crank at the end of said shaft, a depressible rod mounted in a suitable casing, a pin pivotally connecting said depressible rod and crank, the upper end of the rod projecting above the hopper and against which the gasometer is adapted to contact as it lowers, a pivotal bar mounted upon a projection of said hopper and provided With a slot in which said pin has a play, a Weighted member secured to one end of said pivotal bar, and a service pipe leading through the wall of the tank and communicating with the interior thereof, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we hereunto ailix our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
