FOUNTAIN-PEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 12,1913.
Application filed November 18, 1912. Serial No. 732,070.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLEMENTS L. ARAGON, citizen of the United States, residing at Brighamcity, in the county of Boxelder and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to fountain pens, and. has. special reference to a pen which is provided with means for automatically refilling the same.
Another object of this invention is the production of an efficient protecting means used in combination with the flexible reservoir.
Another object of this invention is the production of a compressing fork which is adapted to so compress the spring arms, which rest upon either side of the flexible.
reservoir as to force the air from the reservoir when it is desired to refill the pen.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pen. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal. section of the casing showing the flexible reservoir in elevation. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the sealing plug and spring arms. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the improved compressing fork.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that this pen consists of a hollow casing 1 which is provided with the reduced threaded portion 2. A sealing plug 3 which is provided with the reduced port-ion 4c is positioned upon the outer end of the casing 1, and the reduced portion 4 fits within the opening 5 of the casing 1. This sealing plug is held in correct position by means of the retaining collar 6 which is fitted upon the sealing plug and upon the reduced portion 2 of the casing 1. The reduced portion 4; of the sealing plug 3 is provided with the neck portion 7 and overhanging collar 8.
A flexible reservoir 9 is carried within the casing 1 and is provided with a reduced thickened shank 10 which fits within the pocket 11 of the casing 1, and is held therein by means of the pin 12 which bears upon said thickened portion. The opposite end of the flexible reservoir 9 fits upon the neck 7 of the sealing plug 3 and in this manner forms an efficient means for retaining the ink in such a position as to allow the same to flow freely upon the pen.
In order to regulate the flow of the ink, there is provided a screw 18 which is provided with the head 14, said screw being rotatably mounted within the casing 1. The inner end of the screw 13 is provided with an elongated pin 15 which passes entirely through. the flexible reservoir and fits within the feeding aperture 16 and in this Way forms a means for regulating the flow of the ink.
The sealing plug 3 is provided with a plurality of pockets 17 in which the parallel spring arms 18 fit. hen the sealing plug is in its correct position and fastened upon the casing 1, and the flexible reservoir is placed within the casing, the spring arms 18 will bear upon either side of said reservoir. In order to force the air from the flexible reservoir when it is desired to refill the same, there has been provided a compressing fork which comprises a pair of arms 19 which conform to the inside contour of the casing 1, said arms 19 encircling the spring arms 18 and the flexible reservoir. In order to rotate the spring arms 19 there is provided a shank 20 upon which is mounted the head 21. By means of this improved compressing fork, the pen may be easily refilled by rotating the head 21 of the compressing fork and in this manner compressing the spring arms 18 upon the flexible reservoir whereby to force the air from said reservoir for allowing the same to re fill automatically.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A fountain pen of the class described comprising a body portion, a sealing plug, said sealing plug closing the outer end of said body portion, a collar threaded upon said sealing plug and said casing for holding said sealing plug and said casing together, a flexible reservoir carried within said casing, one end of said flexible reservoir provided with a thickened shank, said casing provided with a reduced pocket, said shank fitting within said pocket and means for holding said shank in said pocket, the other end of said flexible reservoir carried by said sealing plug whereby said flexible reservoir is prevented from moving longitudinally in said casing, a rotatable pin carried by said casing, said rotatable pin adapted to regulate the flow of ink, said sealing plug provided with a plurality of spring arms, said spring arms fitting upon each side of said flexible reservoir and a compressing fork carried by said casing and adapted to compress said spring arms for automatically refilling said pen.
2. A fountain pen of the class described comprising a casing, said casing provided with a reduced threaded portion, a sealing plug carried by the outer end of said casing, a collar threaded upon said sealing plug and said reduced threaded portion whereby said sealing plug and casing are held together, said sealing plug provided with a reduced portion, a neck constituting an overhanging flange formed adjacent said reduced portion, a flexible reservoir carried within said casing, one end of said flexible reservoir positioned upon said neck, said casing provided with a reduced pocket, said flexible reservoir provided with a thickened shank, said shank positioned within said pocket, means carried by said casing and engaging said shank for preventing said reservoir from moving longitudinally within said casing, andmeans carried by said casing for regulating the flow of the ink, said reduced portion of said sealing plug provided with a plurality of pockets, parallel spring arms carried by said pockets, said spring arms fitting upon either side of said flexible reservoir, a compressing fork carried by said casing, said compressing fork comprising a pair of arms, said arms partially encircling said reservoir and said parallel spring arms, and means for rotating said fork whereby said spring arms may be compressed when it is desired to refill the pen.
In testimony, whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLEMENTS L. ARAGON.
