To au whom t may concern Bre it known thatl', 'JOHN C. MCLAUGH- L1 Nacitizen of the United States, residing in the county of Hudson land Stateof New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TypelWriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper cQntrol-i ling means for typewriting machines.
My improvement relates to means for adjusting the paper shelf so that itwill fit. closely around the bottom of the platen i' desired in using thin sheets, but it can be adjusted to take lhir-k laycrs'of paper, or to permit sheets to b e introduced at the front of the platen. f
The invention l have: illustrated as applied to an Underwood machine. The paper shelf is shown arranged to slide up and down on .the usual rod which reinforces or supports it, and it is easily adjusted thereon by means of a handle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improvement as applied to the pla-teirframe or carriage of an Underwood typewriter. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are rear views showing the parts in various positions. Fig. 5 is a section of Fig. 2 on the line 5-5.
In the drawings in the usual way on the end plates 2 of a platen-.frame 3 on which it may be turned by knob f1. At t-heback of the end-plates 2 of the plateufra-me, extending across an connecting them. is a bar 5 on which the usual paper shelf 6 is supported. The shelf is shown extending forwardly and curving under the platen and' around to the front at 6a.
The means of support 4herein ishown, comprises two vstuds 'or pins Tf fixed on the paper-shelf and extending through openings or slots 8 of said bar 5. These pins are ivoted to levers 9 and 10,-pivoted at 11 an 12 in said bar 5 respectively; Said levers 9 and 10 are loosely linked together by a pin 13, and lever 9 is extended at one end to .form a handle 14, by which it may be moved.
Thus it will be seen that the two levers move together, swinging Iaround their pivots, and are adapted to move the shelf 6 nearer and farther from the bottom of the platen 1 by Specification et Letters Patent. Application @led September 28, w11.

1. In a typewriter, the combination of a platen, a .platen frame, rolls adapted to press a sheet against said platen, a paper shelf cooperating with said rolls to hold a sheet.

The combination of a platen, a platen frame, a shelf curving around the under side of the platen to guide the sheets around the same, and means to guide the shelf'- bodily upl and down, including a linkage connectvin'of saidshelf to said platen frame for 1 frame, a'slielf curving around the under side of the platen to guide the sheets around the same, and means .to move the shelf bodily up and down, including a linkage connecting said shelf to said platen frame for bodily movement in parallel lines; said linkage comprising two levers pivotally connected t0 each other and each pivoted to the platen frame. l
8. Thev combination of a platen, a platen frame, ashelf curving around the under side of the platen to' guide the sheets around the same, means to guide the sheli= bodily up and down, including a linkage connect-ing saidl shelf to saidv platen frame for bodily movement in parallel lines, and means for locking said apron in different Working po- A.si tions.
