ets for excavating, dredging and similar machines, and the objects thereof are to provide a. clipper, the body portion of which is formed from two similar parts secured together to form a unitary clipper body, the said parts being of cast metal and, preterably, of cast manganese steel; to provide a dipper body of the type above referred to with a lip which, when in place,will assist in holding the two parts of the body portion together, whereby a stronger body portion is secured; to provide a scheme ot riveting for securing the two parts together with a view to securing maximum strength at the joint between the two parts; to provide a construction and arrangement of ears to which the bail of the dipper is secured which will result in increased strength, and an arrangement in which the rivets which secure the ears to the body port-ion assist in securing the two parts of the body portion together; to rovide certain improvements in and relating to the hinged bottom or door of the dipper; and to provide such other improve ments in and relating to Clippers or buckets for excavating, dredging and similar machines, as are hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and speciically claimed in the clauses of the concluding claim.
With the objects of invention above enumerated in View, our invention consists in the improved dipper shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed, and in such modifications thereof as will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which our invent-ion relates.

1n the drawings, 8 is the front portion ot our improved dipper, the same being curved on its front face as shown in Fig. 2 and having side portions extending to about the middle of the-sides of the dipper body as shown by the dotted line 9, in Fig. 1, each of the two parts of which the dipper body is formed comprising about one-half of the body portion. The front part 8 is provided with upper and lower projecting ribs or bands 10, and with vertically extending ribs 11, for the purpose of strengthening the body portion, these ribs being formed integrally with the said front portion during the process of casting the saine.
The rear portion of the body or our improved dipper is represented by the reference Vnumeral i2, the rear face ot the same being preferably somewhat curved and having forwardly extending sides as shown in Fig. 9, which sides and the rearwardly extending sides o the forward portion are secured together by means of a vertically eX- tending series or rivets 13, as best shown in Fig. 1, to thereby form a unitary dipper body.
The joints between the abutting ends ot the sides of the front and rear portions S and 12, are preferably formed as best shown in Figs. 1, 5, 6 and 7 wherein the side ot the rear portion 12 is provided with an offset projecting flange le which extends over the sides of the front portion and vertically throughout the entire height of the dipper body, a vertically extending shoulder being thus formed along the line 9, Fig. 1, against which the extremities of the sides of the front portion "8 abut, thus to a considerable extent relieving the rivets 13 from shearing stresses as will be understood.
The rear portion 12 is provided with upper and lower ribs or bands 15 and with vertical and transverse ribs 16 upon the rear face thereof for the purpose of strengthening said rear portion and to provide lugs 17 whereby the bottom of the dipper is pivotally secured to the body portion, and other lugs 18 through which the mechanism for determining the angular position or inclination of the dipper with reference to the bank or surface to be dug away, is pivotally connected therewith. -The rear portion with the features above enumerated is formed in a single piece from cast metal as above explained in describing the front portion, manganese steel being the material preferably employed.
The dipper is lifted or moved in the act of digging by means of a bail not shown, the lower ends of which are pivotally secured to the dipper body through ears 19 having an offset portion provided with a hole 20 at their free ends which lies opposite a hole 21 in the dipper body as shown in Fig. a pin passing through these holes and a hole in the end of the bail as will be understood. These ears are arranged at an angle as shown in Fig. 1, and a lug 22 is provided against which the upper end of the ears abut and whereby the rivets whereby the ears are secured in place are relieved from shearing stresses. The ears are secured in place byl a portion of' the vertically arranged series of rivets 13, the rivets which secure the ears in place passing also through the flange 14 of the rear portion 12 and the rear ends of the sides of the front portion 8 as best shown in Figs. 1 to 7.
The reference character 23 designates the lip portion of our improved dipper, the same being formed with a ledge or shoulder 24 which rests upon the upper edge of the body portion, and with a deending portion 25 which extends within the body portion of the dipper and is secured thereto by means of rivets 26, as man being provided as may be necessary. The ength of the lip portion is such that it extends over the joint between the front and rear portions of the dipper body, so that while most of the rivets 26 passthrough the upper end of the forward portion 8 of the body, the rivets 26 near the ends of the lip pass through the upper end of the rear portion whereby the lip contributes to the end of securing a strong connection between the front and rear -portions of the dipper body. Some of the upper rivets of the series of rivets 13 besides passing through the flange 14.- and front portion 8, pass also through the depending portion 25 of the lip, all as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The reference characters 27 designate two supporting members pivotally connected with the rear portion of the dipper body by means of pins passing through the lugs 1 and which members support the swinging door or bottom 28 of the dipper. This door is provided with ribs 29 upon its upper face,
and 30 is a sliding bolt located upon the lower face of the door and held in place by straps 31, and the free outer end of which bolt enters an opening 33 provided in the lower end of a stirrup 32 secured to the lower portion of the front portion 8 of the body portion. The stirrup 32 is provided with a depending stop 34 which projects part way across the opening 33 so asl to form a stop for the end of the bolt 30 while leaving the lower portion of the opening uncovered, so that dirt may not accumulate in the opening and interfere with the entry of the end of the bolt thereinto, all as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The bolt 30 is operated to withdraw the end thereof from the opening 33 by means of a lever 35, pivotally connected therewith, one end of which lever is adjustably supported from a bracket 36 and the other end of which is connected with an operating chain or cable, not shown.

Having thus described our invention, and explained the operation thereof, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a dipper for excavating, dredging and similar machines, a body portion comprising front and rear portions formed from cast metal and secured together along joints located in the sides of the body, one of said portions having a projecting fiange portion and which flange portionD overlies the end of the other of said body portions, and the end of which last-mentioned portion abuts against said shoulder; securing means extending through said flange portion for Iholding said two parts together; an ear by means of which a bail may be connected with said dipper body; and means for securing said ear to said body port-ion, said ear resting upon said flange portion, and the securing means for said ear extending through said flange portion and through the end of the second of said two parts.
2. l'n a dipper for excavating, dredging and similar machines, a body portion comprising front and rear portions formed from cast metal and secured together along vertically extending joints located in the sides of the body, one of said portions having a vertically extending shoulder and a projecting flange portion' extending throughout the height of the body and which flange portion overlies the end of the other of said body portions, and the end of which last-men- Loeaese tioned portion abuts/against said shoulder; securing means extending through said iiange portion tor holding said two parts together; an ear by means of which a bail niay be connected with said dipper body; and ineans for securing said ear to said body portion, said ear resting upon said Harige portion and the securing ineans for said ear extending through said tlange portion and through the end of the second ot said two parts.
3. In a dipper for excavating, dredging and similar machines, a body comprising front and rear portions :torined from cast inetal'and secured together along vertically extending joints located in the sides of the body, one of said portions having a vertically extending shoulder and a projecting flange portion extending throughout the height of the body, and which flange portion overlies the end of the other of said two portions, and the end of which last-mentioned portion abuts against said shoulder; securing means extending through said flange portion for holding said two parts together; an ear through which a bail may be connected with said dipper body; means for securing said ear to said body portion, said ear resting upon said flange portion and the securing means tor said ear extending therethrough and through the end ot' the second of said two parts; a lug adjacent the upper end of said tiange portion and against which the upper end of said ear abuts; and a detachable lip secured to the upper edge of the front portion of said body.
4f. ln a dipper for excavating, dredging and similar machines, a body made up ot a front and a rear portion each formed in a single piece from cast metal and each comprising substantially one-halt of said body, said front and rear portions being' secured together along joints located one in each side of the body between the front and rear faces thereof to thereby form a two-part cast- Gopes of this patent niet he obtained for are cents each, by addressing the metal dipper body; a plurality ot lugs formed integrally with the rear portion of said body and located upon the rear tace thereof; a lip secured to the upper edge ot' the front portion of said body and the rear ends of which extend across the joint between said port-ions and terminate short ot the rear surface ot said rear portions; two lugs formed integrally with the rear portion of said body and located one upon each side of said body adjacent the upper edge thereot; two ears inclined with reference to the longitudinal axis of said body and the upper ends of which abut against the lugs aforesaid and through which a bail may be connected with said body; and fastening means tor securing said several parts together.
5. ln a dipper vfor excavating, dredging and similar machines, a body portion; a swinging door secured thereto and extending across the bottom of said body portion; a sliding bolt carried by said door; a stirrup secured to said body portion and having an opening into which the end of said bolt may enter;'and a stop extending from the upper end of said opening downward and ar way across said opening and against W ich the end of said bolt may rest, the lower portion ot said opening being unobstructed by the stop aforesaid.
