AUGUSTUS W. MEAD, 0F OELRICHS, SOUTH DAKOTA.
CANCELING AND STAMPING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS W. MEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oelrichs, in the county of Fall River and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Tm arovements in Canceling and Stamping Mac ines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stamp canceling and envelop stamping machines and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and efiicient device of this character by which the stamps on envelops may be rapidly canceled with one operation and raised stamps may be applied in another operation.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this character comprising an inking roller and a stamping roller which is provided with means to connect up suitable type members or stamps whereby the form of a cancellation mark on an envelop may be changed and the date stamps may be changed when necessary.
Further objects of this invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sec tion on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. t is a detail elevation of the stamping roller without the canceling or dating stamps thereon. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view through the stamping roller showing one of the dating stamps in section. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view through the canceling stamp.
In the specific embodiment of the invention, as illustrated herein, the machine comprises a pair of side plates 1 and 2, both of which are raised from the support upon which they rest by means of depending feet 3. These side plates are connected together by the roller shafts 4 upon which are journaled suitable belt rollers 5 having a belt 6 traveling thereon from end to end of the machine. The upper portion of the side members have suitable ears 7 formed therein in which are journaled the inking and stamping rollers 8 and 9, respectively. The latter roller is provided with dovetailed channels 10 which extend longitudinally throughout Specification of Letters Patent.

the greater portion of the length of the roller which is, as shown in Fig. 4, reduced at 11 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The ends of the roller have suitable journaling pintles 12 which enter the ears, one of said pintles being preferably provided with a pulley 13 which is grooved to receive the belt 14 which connects the stamping roller with one of the belt rollers, as shown.
Immediately beneath the stamping roller and beneath the upper stretch of the belt, the spring pressed table 15 is mounted which is adapted to form a bed plate for the printing or stamping roll. As shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the stamping roll is provided with stamps 16 which are raised slightly above the periphery of the roll so as to engage the inking roller and so as to engage the envelops as they pass beneath the printing roll. The reduced end of the roll 11 has a collar or sleeve 17 mounted thereon with annular ribs 18 adapted to engage the inking roll and mark the envelops, as shown in Fig. 2. Preferably, the envelo-ps are also dated by a stamp which is arranged close to the sleeve 17 The rollers 5 may be driven in any suit able manner, either by a crank or a motor, and in operation, the envelops are fed to the belt so as to feed them one by one beneath the printing roll 9. This printing roll is of such a diameter that when arranged with stamps on opposite sides, as shown in Fig. 5, the roller can not pass over any envelop without putting one complete stamp thereon.
V7 hat is claimed is A printing roll for stamp canceling machines comprising a circular body having a reduced end and a longitudinal dovetail groove extending from the reduced portion at one end to a point adjacent the opposite end, an annularly ribbed sleeve mounted upon the reduced end and closing said groove and stamps adjustably arranged in the groove and held against removal in one direction by the sleeve.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTUS W. MEAD.
