Be it known that I, Synvnsrnn O. GOULD, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful hiechanical Movement, of which the following is a specification.
The device herein disclosed is a powertransmitting device for an engine, the present application setting forth matter divided out of my prior application for Letters Patent upon an engine, Serial No. 641,284, filed upon the 29th day of July 1911.
The present invention aims to provide novel means for transmitting power from a pair of opposed piston heads to a crank shaft, each piston head and its accessory parts being so connected with the crank shaft as to overcome dead centers and to increase the etliciency of the engine.
XVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as thedescription proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings,Figure 1 shows the invention in vertical longitudinal section; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a support, shown in the form of a cylinder 1, open at both ends and jacketed as shown at 2, the cylinder 1 being formed, preferably, integrally with the base 3 to which the crank case 4 is secured.
Mounted for right-line sliding movement in the cylinder 1 are members, shown as pistons 6 and 7, the piston 6 being operatively connected with the pitman 8 piv oted to one end of a walking beam 9 fulcrumed intermediate its ends as shown at 10 upon a standard 11 fashioned upon any suitable or accessible portion of the engine structure.
To the outer end of the walking beam 9 is pivoted the upper end of an upright connecting rod 12, the lower end of which is pivoted to one arm of a bell crank 14, fulcrumed upon a shaft 15 carried by the base 3. The other arm of the bell crank 14 is Specification of Letters Patent.

pivotally united with a horizontally disposed connecting rod 16, operatively connected with a crank 17 fashioned in a crank shaft- 13 journaled for rotation in mating bearings 19 formed in the base 3 and in the crank case 4, the shaft 18 carrying a fly wheel 20. A pitman 21 is operatively connected with the crank 17, the upper end of the pitman 1 being connected with the piston 7. The bell crank 14 is mounted to swing in substantially a common plane with the lower pitman 21, and the connecting rod 16 stands at right angles to the lower pitman 21 when the lower pitman 21 is on center as shown in Fig. 1.
There is a pinion 22 upon the crank shaft 18, meshing into a pinion 23 upon a shaft 24, suitable mechanism 25 being provided for the operation of the valve 26.
The pistons 6 and 7 will move in opposite directions, the piston 7 imparting mo tion to the crank shaft 18 through the medium of the pitman 21. The piston 6 through the medlum of the pitman 8 will actuate the walking beam 9, the walking beam 9 actuating the connecting rod 12, the latter actuating the bell crank 14 and the bell crank 14 actuating the connecting rod 16, motion thus being transmitted to the crank shaft 18.
The pitmen 8 and 21, the walking beam 9, the connecting rod 12, the bell crank 14 and the connecting rod 16 all operate substantially in a common plane, the connecting rod 16 and the pitman 21 being ope-ratively connected with the single crank 17. Thus it will be seen that a tortional strain upon the crank shaft 18 will be avoided. A hereinbefore stated, noting Fig. 1, it is to be observed that the operative relation of the parts 16 and 21 is such that each of these parts will operate to overcome the dead centering of the other, this being notably true when, as shown in Fig. 1, the piston 7 is at the limit of its upward stroke.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is In a mechanical movement, a support; a pair of power actuated members held upon the support for right-line sliding movement; a shaft having a crank; a rigid primary pitman pivoted directly to one power actuated member and pivoted directly upon the crank; a walking beam; a secondary pitman pivoted to the other power actuated member and pivoted at one end to one end of the walking beam the walking beam constituting the sole support for said end of the secondary pitman; a connecting rod having a common pivotal mounting upon the crank with the primary pitman; a bell crank; a rigid connection pivotally uniting one end of the bell crank with the other end of the walking beam, the other end of the bell crank being pivot-ed to the connecting rod; the connecting rod constituting means,
driven by said other power actuated memher, for exerting a thrust against the pivotal connection between the primary pitman and the crank, when the primary pitman and the crank are in alinement.
