IITNITED earns PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL B. ROS E, 'NEW YORK. N. ,Y.
CABINET.
.SpecificatiOn of Letters Patent;
Application filed June10, 1912. Serial No. 702,766. p
To all whoi'n it may concern:
' for filing capacity increases.
Be'it known thatl, SAMUEL B. Rosa, a
citizen of the United States, residing in the My invention is also designed to furnish a cabinet built on the so-called elastic system, whereby the individual file unit may be extended to accommodate a certain maximum number of records and may then be combined. with other units,'as the demand In accomplishing this end, I provide an individual casing for each record and a collapsible or telescopic frame for receiving and alining v ,the individual record containers, so that as the record user adds to his collection he may adjust the frame to accommodate the. 1ncreasing number of records he possesses.
' SOFurthermOre, the frame structures areso designed that they may be stacked, forming uniform shelves or nests of shelves.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is aperspective view of a frame filled to less than its maximum capacity with records and record containers; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the lower portion of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an individual record container and its record; Fig. 4: is an enlarged view of the label or tag which performs the double functionof 'SQIV-l'Hjg iO identify each record and of aid- ,iifi'g"iri-the withdrawal of. it from its container when its use is desired; Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of Fig. Fig. 6 i
a transverse sectional view, parts being .broken away, of a nest of containers-yFig. 7 is a perspective view of the extensible frame: Figs. 8, 0, 10 'and 11. are, respectively transverse sectional views at lines 8, 9, 10 and 11 ofFig. 7; Fig. i2 is an enlarged perspective view of the intermediate telescopic member or upright of the frame. Referring to the drawings in detail, the
numeral l-designates the hollow square base Patented Au .'5, i913.
of the frame, to which are secured the up rights 2.
Sliding longitudinally in these uprights are intermediate uprights 3,;each l of which carries a dovetails ei'it'eringa cor responding slot 5 in the main uprights. The intermediate uprights carry symmetricall vr' arranged dovetails (3 which enter slots or";
grooves 7 in athird set of upr gh -members? 8. There is thus formed a telescopicfstru ture capable of beingextended as shown in Fig. 7, as more and more record containers are inserted. The intermediate sectio'ns ai ie' i. provided with two pairs of slots'9 and 10,
respectively.
Through the former proj eet pins 11 which are securedto the main up-"'1 rights 2 and which serve t-o limit "the up ward travel of the intermediate uprights? Pins 12 secured to the lower, extremity of the upper members 8 enter slots 1'. lOLIQa'nd limit the upward bers.
Across-bar or bridge piece 'hi'n'ge dfa't l l-it to one of the upper members. and detach ably secured by hooks 15, oi' in rej ins suitable manner to the otherup'p'er member;
This crossbar carries a handlelh. Blo'cl diate members carry thefhookslfii and sta pics 19. the former adapted to e'ng' is. 17 secured to the upper end of the intei ine' staples 20, and the latter to be engagedby hooks 21 when the blocks enter the sockets formed in the lower member at such times as the device is not in an extended or completely extended position.
For carrying each record 23, or similar article to be stored. I provide a packing unit or container 2i comprising a shallow hollow box of such dimensions as ccnugletely to inclc-se the record or other article, and open at one end, 25. A strip of fabric 26 is secured at 2? to the inside of the bottom of each box or container, midway between the sides. and is looped toward the back before being gassed-above and over the record toward the front. through which it projects, carrying on its extremity a tag 28 which contains a removable name plate 29- hearing the title of the record. It obvious that when one of these tags is pulled toward the front, it will draw with it the fabric stripanal gently but firmly extract the record from its container, making it readily accessible.
Each container bears in each side anotch 30 just wide-enough to inclose each of the three sets of uprights, .as clearly indicated 7 5 travel of the up ermei .the main, intermediateor uppernprights,
in ri s 'sg'a d and 1,1,the uprights being of uniform width, as shown. Each container is therefore locked. rigidly'against move-' ment in a direction toward or. away trom the opening in it, and is also looked in a;
transverse direction by contact With either according to what extent-the frame has been raised from the base or extended. A solid structure is thus formed at all points, no
matter how many containers may be placed at one time Within a single frame. Transverse movement is prevented in the case of the intermediate-and upper uprights by contactwith the-inner portion of the slots 30, and in the case ofthe lower or main up rights by means of the flanges 31 which engage the sides of the'containers.
In Fig. 6 I have shown how whenone frame is filled to its capacity, another may be placed directly upon it, the handle 16 of I only one specific embodiment of my device,
the lowersystem being accommodated within the hollow frame 1, and the cross-piece 13 i of the lower system fitting within the notches 32 provided in theframe.
While I have illustrated and described I realize that my inventionis susceptible of manifold modifications without departing from the spirit thereof, and I do-not wish-to be limitedto the precise form shown.
Having thus. described my invention, I
claim 1. In combination, a base, extensible up- I rights secured to said base at opposite sides thereof, said uprights being of .constant width-regardless ofthe, degree to which;
theygarelextended, and a plurality of in'; 'dividual 'phonographic record containers, having notches zit-opposite sides thereoftor.
engage the said uprights andfbe locked alineihe'nt thereby,
"2. In combination; abase, extensible dip-g rights secured to said-base'at opposite sides;
thereof, said uprights being of constant width regardless of the degreeto which they are extended,a cross-bar detachablyvsecuredto the free ends of said'upright's, anda plurality of individual jphonographic record containers having notches at opposite sides thereof to engage the said uprights and be locked'in alinement thereby.
3. In combination, a base, extensible ,uprights' secured to said base at opposite sides thereof, said uprights being ot constant' width regardless of the degree to which they are extended, and'a plurality of individual phonographic record containers provided with means interlocking with said uprights tended.
