Be it known that HARRY A. RHODES, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'the city and county of Denver and State ot Cot crade, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Electromagnetic Motors; and l. do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to lmake and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part et this specification.
l r, `invention relates to improvement in elect-ric motors. ln this case l employ magnets composed of' coils Wound around iron cores, each. magnet having two pole shoes or plates which act upon the armature or rotary element ot the motor, the latter being composed ot' a number ot iron segments separated by segments composed ot non-magnetic material. The coils of the magnets receive current through the segments of a connnutator from brushes arranged in such a manner as to short circuit some magnets and have. the rest Working, that is energized, and acting on the soft iron segments of the rotary armature, whereby the latter is actuated and transmits power to a shaft.
Having briefly outlined my improved construction, l Will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
l'n this drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation', partly in section, of my improved motor. The section is taken on the line 1-1, `llig. 3, looking toward the lett or in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2, Fig. 3, looking toward the right, or in the direction ot the arrow adjacent said line. Fig. 3 is a section taken through the motor approximately on the line `5-3, Fig. 1.

Let the numeral 5 designate a suitable! .trame having arms 6 and 7, projecting upwardly, their extremities being'l equipped with bearings 8 and .9, in which an operening shaft 10 is journaled, 'the said shaft hav ing a pulley 12, at on extremity. The armature or rotary elei'nent 13, et the motor is provided with a li ub"14, secured to the 55 shaft by a key 15. Mounted on spokes 1G, et the armature are posts 17 and 1S, carrying positive and negative brushed-19 and 20 respectively, the said brushes being held in place by springs 21 and 22 respectively. These brushes engage a commutator Q3, which is dovetailed into a housing member 24v, secured to the bearing 9, of the shaft 10, by a set bolt `The commutator is held in place upon the housing 2a, by a ring 2G, held in place by' screws or bolts 27.
The current is brought into the motor through a conductor 28, which leads to a post 29, mounted on the frame, but insulated theretroi'n, as shown at 30. This post carries a brush 31, engaging a eollectorring 32, which is connected with the post 17, by a Wire From the segmentsmf the com mutator, Wires. 34, passing through openings 115 in the housingQl, lead to the coils 35, of electro1'na.gnets 3,6, the coalsbeing Wound around ,iiron cores 37 and embraced on opposite ends by pole shoes or plates 3S, which project inwardly land have their extremities curved, as shown' at 39, to partly surround the peripheral. segments ot .the rotating armature. In the operation of the device, the magnets are energized and denergized in .such a manner as to act upon the iron segments of the armature to rotate the' latter certain of the magnets being short-circuited to prevent energization, while other magnets are advantageously .energized and act upon the arm atur e.
