.3 of the valve is carried, and which is pref- UNITE STAT SAMUEL YBARRA, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
EXPLOSIVE-ENGINE.
To all whom it may con ern Be it known that I, SAMUEL Ynamm, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Explosive-Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to explosive engines, the object of the present improvement being the construction of an engine of this kind having a rotary valve of marked simplicity and durability.
Figure I is a cross section through the upper end of the engine cylinder, and the parts associated therewith. Fig. II is a perspective view of one of my engine valves.
In the drawings: A designates the cylinder of my engine closed at its uper end by a cylinder head member B. The cylinder of my engine has locatedin its wall an admission port and an exhaust port, one of which is shown at 2, through which explosive agent may be admitted to the cylinder chan1- her, and the products of combustion may he dispelled from said chamber.
X designates the rotary valve of the engine cylinder by which the admission and exhaust ports are controlled. This rotary valve comprises a ring 3 fitted in the seat. provided therefor Within the cylinder A, the valve ring being preferably of such dimensions as to extend a considerable portion of the length of the cylinder from its head end with the inner wall of the valve ring flush with the inner wall of the cylinder beneath it, thereby permitting the operation of the piston into the valve ring as it moves toward the cylinder head. In the valve ring 3 is a port 4 that is adapted to be brought at difi'erent times into registration with the admission port and the exhaust port of the cylinder, thereby providing for admission and exhaust of explosive agent through the valve ring. The rotary valve X also comprises a spider or carrier 5 by which the ring erably located adjacent to the end of the valve that abuts against the cylinder head. This spider, while it serves to carry the valve ring, serves as a carrier of such nature as to present only a minimum bearing surface of the valve to the cylinder head,

with the object in view of lessening the triotion between these members, which it is desirable to do, particularly in view of the end thrust of a rotary valve occasioned by pressure thereagainst in the cylinder chamber.
Each rotary valve X is provided with a stem 6 that extends through the head of the cylinder occupied by said valve and has applied to it a driving member 7, which may be operated in any suitable manner.
It is highly desirable in the use of an engine valve of the type to which my present valve pertains to provide for the etlicient lubrication of said valve. in order that all portions of the valve may operate with the greatest freedom and with minimized wear. My valve is, therefore, provided with oil ducts 11 that extend through the stem 6, thence through the spider arms 5, and thence through the valve ring to its periphery. These oil ducts are supplied from a duct 12 leading through the cylinder head member B, and with which the oil ducts 11. communicate. upon each rotation of the rotary valve X the communication being established due to the oil ducts 11. extending through the stem (3 in such manner as to register with the oil duct 12.
In the practical use of my engine. the piston operates in the cylinder as in any ordinary explosive engine, and the rotation of the rotary valve X is so timed that the port 4 in said valve will be brought at proper times into registration with the inlet port for the admission of a charge of explosive agent, become closed during compression, then brought into communication with the ignition chambers, and finally brought into registration with the exhaust port.
I claim 1. In an. explosive engine, a cylinder provided with inlet and exhaust ports, and a rotary valve comprising a ring for controlling said ports and a central operating stem and ring carrier, the said stem being provided with a lubricant passageway, and the said carrier having a duct in its top face leading from said passageway to the ring of the valve.
2. An explosive engine, comprising a cylinder having inlet and exhaust ports in its wall, a ported rotary ring valve for controlling said ports, said ring valve comprising a ring fitted to the wall of said cylininder having inlet and exhaust ports in its wall, a ported rotary ring valve for controlling said port, said valve comprising a ring fitted to the wall of said cylinder, and
a carrier for said ring comprising a spider and a stem, the said stem, spider and ring \0 being provided With oil ducts leading'from the stem to the periphery of the ring.
