CALCULATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filer; may s,
Patented July 22, 1913.
1912. serial No. 695,935'.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES F. JAnRnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Billings, in the county of'Yellowstone and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Calculators, of which the following is a specification.
rThis invention relates to calculators, the object in view being to provide a simple and convenient device of the class described tor quickly figuring out the cost and percentage of profit of any article of known weight, such as coal, wheat, oats, and the like, the device being also useful for computing the lamount duc to workmen in time otlices, the
device embodying', in connection with a suitable base and chart, an indicator, which, together with the chart, is graduated in such manner as to indicate the total cost, percentage ot profit, etc., and having combined therewith means vfor adjusting the hand in connection with the supporting base, so that it may be frictionally retained at any given point to which it is adju sted.
lVith the. above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and :u'rmigement of parts, as will be 'lufreiilalterl more 'lull \v described` illustrated in the accompanviug drawings, and pointed outin the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of the calculator. Fig. Q is a cross section through the same, taken in line with the indicator' hand.
The calculator contemplated in this invention con'iprises essentially a base 1 which is quadrant shaped, as shown, comprising the two edges 2 and f-l arranged at right,
angles to each other, and the curved or arcuate edge l, which is described from the point 5 as a center. at which point 5 the indicator hand (lis pivoted. .Xiong the outer curved edge t ot the base, there is an upstanding liangc T which extends inward, as shown at to torni an overhanging lip, beneath which thc outer extremity ot' the indicator hand 6 nieves in trictional contact. ln order to provide for increasing or diminishing the Afritti-ouai contact between the hand and the inwardl extending lip ot the marginal flange, I provide adjacent to the pivot 5 a hand suj'iporting quadrant or segx'nent 9 which is wedge-shaped in cross section, upon 2 which the indicator hand t3 bears. The pivot 5 has the upper end thereof threaded to receive a thumb nut 10, so that by screwing the nut, 10,. downwardly, the pivoted end-ot1 the hand is deflected sufficiently to elevate the outer extremity of the hand to a proportionate degree, thereby causing it to bear frictionally against the overhan'ging lip or fiangeS, above referred to. By this means, the hand may be retained in a reliable manner at any poi-nt to which iti-has been adjusted. The hand is further provided with a knob l1 to facilitate swinging the hand around its pivotal center.
In connection with the base 1, I employ a chart. shown at 12, embodying radial rows 13 of ligures, previously worked out and applied thereto, to indicate'the results desired to be obtained. The hand is provided with a central longitudinal slot 14,
indicator hand is graduated and figures are applied thereto complementa] to the figures in the radial rows 13 on the chart, the rows ofltigures on the hand being complemental to and adapted to register with the figures in the radial rows of the chart. lt is turther designed to provide the chart with caling shown as twelve number to contain the twelve calendar months of the year.
It will he understood that interchangeable charts and'indicator hands may be ei'nployed is, accordance with the material upon which the calculations are to be made. For example` the chart illustrated in the accom* partying `drawings is especially designed with reference to sugar beets, as delivered by a Vfarmer to a sugar factory, or receiving station. The outermost rows of figures along the curved edge ot the chart reprethe weight ot' cleaned samples ot beets. so I that in moving the hand trom lett to right, the hand Ais stopped opposite the ligure which represents the weight of the articles, as previously determined. For example, the hand is shown as moved to the number 230, so that the radial row of figures corresponding with the number 30 is shown through II the observation slot 14 inthe indicator hand; Supposing now that the clean sample weighs ltwenty pounds, reference is made to the Inumber 2() on the indicator hand, which shows the percentage in this case to be 33. j In this way. the operator quickly arri vos at j the desired result, without the necessity of -and at one or both sides of the slot 14, the f endar spaces, as shown at 15, said spaces bey sent. the weight ot dirty samples of beets,- while 'the figures on the Indicator hand give sepa ately figuring out each separate transaction, as the beets are received at the re- '-ei\'ing station.
W hat is claimed is:
A calculator, comprising a quadrant shaped base, a movable indicator hand pivotally connected to the base the point of the angle 'forming' the center from Whicli the nrc of the quadrant is described. a chart superiniljiosed upon the base and having computing rows o figures radial to the center of movement ot' the indicator hand, said hand being provided with a longitudinal observation slot adapted to disclosel a single radial row of figures of the chart and being gradoated and provided with figures complemental to those of the Chart, a grooved rim extending around the curved margin of the base 1n which the outer extremity of the 1ndicator hand is guided and conned, and a' tension device at the pivot of tliendioator hand for limiting therictional engagement between the indicator hand and grooved rirn, said tension device comprising a hand supporting segment ofwedge-sliape in cross section, an a clamping screw forming the pivotl of the hand.
In testimony whereof atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
