Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 522, 1913.
Patented July 23%., llll El. Serial No. 743,489.
To all whom z' may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. Ci-imsfrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenilworth, vin the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful l'niproveinents in Car-Roofs, ol which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway cars and particularly to the construction and assembling oi the roel:I and side Walls.
The invention has for its object the provision of an emcient structure providing for a Weather-proof roof which has no through apertures for the admission of moisture and in which the carlines and roof plates are se Vcurely supported and anchored together and to the side Walls in such manner as to pro vide for sufficient play to accommodate the vibrations incident to use and yet to guard against the admissionot the elements to the car interior,
lin order that the invention may be readily understood in its application to car con struction generally, l have shown and described the saine herein as applied to that type of ear in which the side framing is ar- Y ranged exterior to the sheathing. els, hoivever, the invention is obviously applicable to other types of cars with such slight modifications as will be readily suggested to car builders, the drawings and description are to loe taken in an illustrative sense and notas necessarily limiting the invention.
ln the drawings: Figure l is a partial side elevation of the upper end portion el? a car embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse vertical sec tion on the line 3-3 of Fig. 4. Fig'. 4l is a fragmentary longitudinal .vertical section on the line 4;--4 of Fig. tl; Fig. 5 is'a sectional plan view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3; and Fig. is a fragmentary detail in perspective showing` the end portion of a carline.
ln the drawings the side walls oi the car are shown as comprising the sheathing l1., supported by and suitably secured to the side posts .l2 constituting;v the side framing. shown the sheathing is arranged upon the inside of the framing so vas to present an unn illsv broken interior. Ilhe side posts are of a height less than the interior height of the car and are provided at their upper ends with the brackets 13 having` horizontally eirtending flanges 14. Upon the upper ends of the side posts is supported upon each side of the car a longitudinally extending Z-bar which comprises a lower horizontal ontivardly projecting flange 15, a vertical web 16, and an inwardly projecting horizontal flange 1T. rl`he inner tace oi' the web 'll is substantially flush with the interior faces ol the side posts l2 and -torina substantially an upward continuation thereo'lE to support the upper courses of the sheathing ll. 'lhe upper flange 17 of the Z-bar overlies the uppermost sheathing' strip and serves to suppe t the end ot' the carlines 1S. Fach of tlny carlines extends continuously from Wall lo wall olE the car and is bent in its medial l portion to give the proper slope te the car roof. The carline is trough-shape compris inf.;l a bottoni portion 19, side Walls Q0, 20, and laterally extending flanges 2l, 2l, the flanges 21 being perforated and countersunlr at intervals to accommodate the conical head 2Q ot a bolt 2S.A Arranged upon and sup-` ported by the horizontal'lange 17 oi the Zbar is a side plate composed otlsections 24, Q4, arranged in longitudinal alineinent and having their adjacent ends separated to accommodate carlines therebetween, the upper faces ol the plate sections being recessed to receive the carline flanges Q1 and provided with apertures for the accommodation of the shenks of the bolts 23. The Zoar flange 17 is likewise provided with apertures registering with those of the side plate to receive the lower ends of the bolts 23, the nuts 25 being employed to clamp by means of the bolts the carlines and the Z-bar flange upon the interposed side plate sections whereby the earlines are held in rigid relation to the Zsbars.
The flanges Q1 of the cai-lines are preferably out away at a point above the outer face of the web 16 oiY the 2lb: 1 and the bottoni and side Walls of 'the carline are bent downward along the outer iiace of the web, the extreme ends oi?" the bottom and side Walls abutting against the upper face olf the edges the Fl the cap stl-1p CYD use. ltls to be l of Lh- ,beilel; of tif-.a Carlin@ behind e overl m cap strip portion, The a of lh dependentpforialol of he roof plates and cap strip upon the uppe face Uf lle 'flange 5 is sacemly los to permit any inca-21# sderable amer-.n of moisture as' will nd ils way im@ lle Carlin@ to escapa therefrom but' as aiclitmlal pro'vson'of escape the `Gted as iff Sams; r an exceeding y assemblage all membes, f
