STUBBLE-EILAVER AND GANE-SCRAPER.
Application filed February 1, 1913.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1913.
Serial No. 746,220.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, Trrnorrnnn Bounnnnu, citizen of the United States, residing at Labadieville, in the parish of Assumption and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful improvements in Stubble- Shavers and Cane-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to stubble shavers, and consists in the peculiar machine, hereinafter described and claimed, constructed with a view to being used to advantage in the shaving of a cane stubble crop and also in the scraping of a plantcane crop.
The machine is also adapted to accomplish both functions stated at the same time, if desired.
In the drawings, accompanying; and forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine, constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention that l. have as yet devised; the working parts being shown by full and dotted lines in different positions. 2 is a plan of the lower part of the rear portion of the machine. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the machine.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other features my novel machine comprises spaced runners 1 and a longitudinal-central beam 2, disposed in a horizontal plane considerably above that of the runners and having at its forward end suitable means 3 for the attachment of draft animals. The beam 2 is supported in the relative position stated by metallic supports 4-, fixed at their ends to the runners and at intermediate points of their lengths to the beam. On the rear portion of the beam 2 is fixed a support 5 bearing a drivers seat 6, and on the rear support t are fixed footrests 7. It will also be noticed that the beam 2 is equipped with a 1' red standard 8 and a rigid brace 9 therefor, and that behind said standard a curvilinear and apertured bar 10 is fixed to and rises from the beam. Fulcrumed at 11 on the standard 8 is a hand lever 12, equipped with a detent 13 designed to enter apertures in the bar to adjustably fix the lever thereto, and inter posed between and connected to the forward arm of the lever and the beam 2 is a retractile spring 1 1, calculated to assist in the upward movement of the rear arm of the lever and the weight that is carried by said arm, as hereinafter described. Braces 15 are extended between and connected to the runners l and the forward upright 4, as shown.
16 is a vertically-disposed and longitudinal-central steel disk, having a knife edge, and designed to form a furrow incidental to the forward movement 'of the machine.
17 is a ll-shaped scraper having a blunt edge and designed to scrape plantcane as well. as remove cut stubbles from the row.
18--1 -.S are horizontally-disposed steel shaving blades, having forward knife edges, and adapted to shave stubble, and 19 is a vertically movable sub-frame, while 20-20 and 21-21 are lower and upper, longitudinal, vertically-swinging arms connected adjacent their forward ends to the side portions of the forward upright i and also con nected near their rear ends to the side portions of the sub-frame 19. The disk 16 is mounted in and carried by a haunt-1r 22 connected to and depending from the transverse portion of the sub-frame 19, and curved forwardly and downwardly from said sub-frame portion, as host shown in 1. The hanger 22 is preferably extended rearwardly from the sub-frame 19 to form a beam 23, and to said beam is connected, preferably by a shackle 24, a standard that is fixed with respect to and rises from the blunt-edge scraper 17. The shavingblades 18 are fixed to and carried by the depending; portions of the suhframe 19.
Connected to and rising from the sub-- frame 19 is a bar 26 which bar is preferably coi'mected to the rear arm of the lever 12 in an adjustable manner, shown. From this it will be readily appreciated that when the lever 12 is swung to carry its rear arm upwardly, the disk 16, scraper 17 and shaver blades 18 will be simultaneously raised, as indicated by the dotted lines in 1. The spring 14: will assist in the said upward movement of the rear arm of the lever and the parts connected therewith, so that the expenditure of but little effort on the part of the driver is required. @n downward movement of the rear arm of lever 12, the scraper 17, the disk 16 and shaver blades 18 will be simultaneously depressed and. carried to the lower positions.
The facility with which the sub-frame 19 can be raised and lowered by the driver incidental to the progress of the machine will be appreciated as an important advantage when it is stated that because of the uneven surface of the ground the sub-frame 19 must be repeatedly raised and lowered so as to assure the stubbles being shaved level with the ground.
The vertically swinging arms 20 and 21 serve to hold the sub-frame 19 at right angles to the runners 1, irrespective of the height of the sub-frame, and in that way assure the scraper 17 and the shaving blades 18 being always parallel to the runners and the surface of the field. It will also be noted that the lower arms 20 are extended rearwardly of the sub-frame 19 and are arranged and adapted to move vertically atthe inner sides of the side portions of the rear support 4, this in order to enable said lower arms 2-0 to prevent lateral movement of the sub-frame 19 and the parts carried thereby.
The disk 16 during the operation of the machine forms an opening for the apex of the scraper 17 to follow in, and also serves to cut through or clear any obstruction which might tend to bend the apex or point of said scraper 17.
My novel machine is adapted to be used .to shave and scrape at the same time, or
the shaving can be accomplished at one time and the scraping at another time.
It will also be appreciated that the ma chine is adapted to be handled to advantage by a single man and that it is calculated to assure uniform growth of sugar cane.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s:
