rlhis invention relates to paper ruling machines, and has reference to the construction of the slideway vfrom which the penholders are carried, and also to the clip by which each penliolder is held to the said slideway. As is well known the slideway extends practically the full length ot the beam and is usually made in one with the said beam, although it may be attached thereto.

An important feature of the present in vention lies in adapting the clip, which is ot a springy or yielding construction, to engage the outer edges ot the said slideway so as to give a irmer support than is the case where spring clips are used engaging grooves within the edges of, that to say toward the center oit, the slideway. l also use an inner spring clipping means in addition to the said outer clip to still more [irmly support the penholders slidingly upon the slideway.

Referring now to the accon'ipanying drawings which illustrate the invention z-F i gure l is a general view showing the slideway with a clip secured thereto and a penholder and pen in position; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the slideway only; Figs. 3 and l are elevation and plan views respectively oi the clip.

rl`he slideway a is termed ot a cross sectional shape, in which the central portion of the upper surface .is hollowed or guttered as shown at Z), leaving a small portion c ot such surface uinlistnrbed. At the rear part, from this upper surilface it is downwardly undercut as shown at (Z at about degrees). At the front part a slight downward beveled portion e is formed, and from this extends a downwardly undercut part f similar to that of the rear part (Z. The pen s is mounted on a carrier t sliding on the penholder proper g.

rlhe clip which embraces the penholder g has the body made from one piece of sheet metal (preferably steel). rllhe sides Zt oli each clip are carried upward and formed to accommodate the pressure spring Z 'for rctaining the penholder g therein. A further spring lever g may be provided for increasing the pressure olf the spring Z when the shank is in position. it the underside of this clip, and at the forward part, a tongue fm, ol the metal is bent and curved into shape to suit the Yliront part f et the slideway (z aforesaid. Also at the rear part o't the un* der-side oi the clip a tongue n oit the metal is bent and shaped so as to lforui a spring grip to engage the rear part (Z ol' the aforesaid slidewafy. rllhese two underneath tongues may if desired be made in one piece and then secured to the underside oit the main or body part of the clip,` but it is an economical advantage to `form such tongues and body in one and the same piece.

ln addition to the clip above described for gripping against the outer edges ot the slideway, turther spring clipping means are provided at the central under part ot the main clip, as shown in lligs. l and El, such further clip being t'ormed in one with, or secured to, the main clip. The additional clipping means is provided with down wardly extending front and rear portions which are adapted to engage rictionally with hollowed out or `ajuttered parts ott the slide Yay a. Preferably such downwardly extending ends are or t! shape, as shown at y), each ot such U members engaging with both sides oi. a groove 0 specially formed in the main slideway a.

A reverse movement will olE course release the clip ufrom the slideway. lThe inner clipping means p will ot'. course readily pass into or out of the grooves 0 during the above described operationI lVhat l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. ln a paper ruling machine, a main slideway provided with slots in the top between the edges and center thereof, and means tor detachably securing a penholder slidinigly on said slideway comprising a clip, means for holding the penholder on said clip, spring tongues on said clip engaging slideway, and means on said clip for ing said slots.

engag- -undercut portions of the outer edges of the l means for holding the penholder on said clip, a flat upper surface to said slideway engaging a flat lower surface on said clip, an undercut edge on one side of said slideway engaged by a spring tongue on one side of said clip, an undercut edge, having a beveled upper part, on the other side of said slideway engaged by another spring tongue on the other side of the clip, and means on said clip for engaging said slots.

3. In a paper ruling machine, a main slideway provided with slots in the top between the edges and center thereof, and means for detachably securing a penholder slidingly on said slideway comprising a clip, means for holding the penholder on said clip, spring tongues on said clip engaging undercut portions of the outer edges of the slideway, and U-shaped spring grips on said I clip for engaging said slots.

4. In a paper ruling machine, a main slideway provided with slots in the top between the edges and center thereof, and means for detachably securing a penholder i slidingly on said slideway comprising a clip, means for holding the penholder on said clip, a flat upper surface to said slideway engaging a fiat lower surface on said clip, an undercut edge on one side of said slideway engaged by a spring tongue on one side of said clip, an undercut edge, having a beveled upper part, on the other side of said slideway engaged by another spring tongue on the other side of the clip, and U-shaped spring grips on said clip for engaging said slots.

5. In a paper ruling machine, a main slideway provided with slots in the top between the edges and center thereof, and means for detachably securing a penholder slidingly on said slideway comprising a clip having a flat lower surface engaging a flat upper surface on said slideway, spring means for holding the penholder on said clip, an undercut edge on one side of said slideway engaged by a spring tongue on one side of the clip, an undercut edge, having a beveled upper part, on the other side of said slideway engaged by another spring tongue on the other side of the clip, and U-shaped spring grips on said clip for engaging said slots.
