Be it known that l, THOMAS J. Naunrr, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Door-Operating Mechanism for Passenger-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
One object of this invention is to construct a simple and eilective means for operating the hinged doors which close one side of the platform of a passenger car.
Another object of the invention is to locate the door operating mechanism over head so that it will. be coi'npletely out of the way and to provide means, within easy reach of the conductor or niotorinan, for operating the mechanism to open and close the doors.
The invention further relates to certain details of construction which will be fully described hereafter.
In the accompanying drawingz-Figure 1, is a sectional plan view of a portion of the rear platform of a car illustrating my invention; Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view on the line 22, Fig. 1, showing the doors closed; Fig. 3, is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the doors in the open position; and Fig. l, is a sectional plan view of one part of Fig. 1, showing the doors in the open position.
A is the body of the car.

B is the vestibule casing of the platform.
D and E are the pivoted doors for closing one side of the platform. These doors, in the present'instance, are made in two sections, 1), D and E, II", respectively.
(Z and c are the vertical pivot shafts on which the inner sections D and E of the doors are mounted; the outer sections l) and E being pivotally mounted on the inner sections by hinges d and 6, respectively. On the outside of the section D near its upper edge, is a bracket carrying a vertical guide roller (Z and on the section E is a bracket carrying a vertical roller (3 These two rollers are adapted to travel between rails a in the heading a of the door frai'ne, which is located, in the present instance, directly under the roof 5 of the platform.
On the end of the pivot shaft (Z is an arm f which is connected by a rod f to an arm 2' on a rock shaft I. This rock shaft is arranged longitudinally in respect to the car and comparatively close to the side of the platform and mounted, in the present instance, in bearings 71, it secured to the roof 6 of the platform. On the vertical pivot shaft 6 is an arm 9 connected by a rod 9 to an arm '2' on the rock shaft 1. On the shaft I, in the present instance, and loated about mid-position between the two arms 2?, t", is the operating lever This lever is secured to the shaft 1 and one arm a of the lever has a depending rope or strap m provided with a handhold, and the other arm a has a depending rope or strap m also provided with a handhold. The arms in the present instance are arranged at right angles to the arms 2", i on the shaft l.
Vl hen the lever N is in the position illus trated in Figs. 1 and 2, the doors are in the closed position, but by pulling down upon the cord or strap m the sections D and E of the doors are turned on their pivots to the open position as in Fig. 2, and the sections 1) and E are turned on their hinges and are guided so as to assume the position illustrated in Figs. 3 and -Il:. In the present instance the platform is divided by a rail O or other barrier, :lorming ingress and egress passageways; i') being the ingress passageway and 7) being the egress passageway, and the conductor stands back of the rail O in the egress passageway; the depending cords or straps being so located as not to interfere with the movement of passengers to and from the car. The position of the lever N may be varied, depending upon the type of car to which the invention is applied, and the longitudinal shaft I may be located at any distance desired from the doors, also depending upon. the type of car.
