Specica/on of Letters Patent.
Patented July 223, 19113..
Application filed october S. 1910. Serial No. 536,004.
To all Li/'wm t may concern.' Be it knownthat We, Doneer A. LYON and Enu'in R. Cox, Jr., citizens or" the'United States, residing in Heroult, Shasta county, California, have invented certain 1improvements in Electrode-Holders for Electric Furnaces, of whichY the 'following is a speci ication.
Our invention relates to means for supporting electrodes in that type of metallurgical furnace in which the heat of the elecic current is caused to eilfect7 or to aid in erecting, the reduction of the nietel, one in stance of such a` -iurnace beingthat .for l5 which we filed application forflliettersPah ent on April 13, 1909,'Serial No. 789,718.
The objects of our invention are to pro- /vide for the rigid support of the electrodej to prevent injury to the elecr'ode due to the intense heat of the furnace, and to prevent the escape, around the elect ode. of gases from the treating chamber the furnace. These objects we ettein in the manner hereinafter set forth, reierence heing had to Ithe accompanying drawings, in whichy Figure l is a view, partly in elevation and partly in central longitudinal section on the line /1-0., Fig. i2, of an electrode holderconstructed in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2 is an end view, partly in section and looking` at the holder in the direction of the arrow fr, Fig. 1, but omi ting the caps with which certain of the adjusting' nuts are provided, and 3 is end view of theholder looking in the direction ofthe arrow y. 1. 2 and 3 are on a smaller scale than Fig. 1.
The holder consists of an annular casing' 1, with internal annular chamber 2, having an inlet 55 at the bottom and an outlet lat the top, so that Wat-er or other cooling agent4 may be caused to iiow through the casing ih order to prevent the destruction or rapid iin* pairment o the same, and of the parte cr.rried thereby, bythe highflegree ot' heat to which they are subjected.
Projecting externally from the casing l is a flange 5, having its periphery recessed to reduce its Weight, said 'flange being stitiened and strengthened by means of ribs (3 extendingr from the back of the ilange to the outer shell of the casingF 1. The outer shell of the casing, at and near one end of the saule, is externally threaded for the reception of a ring i', the latter.
with the hearing ila-nge 5,' aconstituting a,- clamp whereby the casingl can belmounted upon a. be. plate, ring, or other body 9'0fg' insulating material, which is intended tobe. 50 bolted to the casing of the furnace.
.The bore of the casing 1 is tapered inten nelly and to this bore is fittedthe correspondingly tapered outer face of a splity or sectional bushing` 10 a bushing comprising 65 three sections or segments beingfshown in'4 the drawingy and said bushing beingintended to confine the electrode, which is?` shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, longitudinal inwardmovement of the sections of the 70 bushing in hecasing 1 serving to contract z said sections ot the bushing upon'theelectrede to .firmly retain the same, and move' ment ci' the ltions.' of the, bushing in the opposite diri hold upon the electrode in order to permit application. removal or longitudinal .adjustment of the saine.
Tilhen the electrode is properly clamped hy the bushing, 'the intimate Contact of thel 153' latter with both the casing and the electrode. and the extended area of such contact. ineures perfect electrical connection hetu'een said casing and electrode.
The bushing; has. at its outer end, a i'iange 35 11, comprisingy in the present instance three segments. one onkeach section' of the bushing, this flange being? free to more longitudinally in ay chamber formed within an annular-- flange 12 project-ing longitudinally from the 90 outer Jface of the casing. The chamber also receives an annular follower 13, whereby a mass or? packing 14, of asbestos or other heat-resistinfly material, can be confinedl between said follower and the langed bushing, 95
said packing hearing firmly upon the electrede, and preventing any escape, around said electrode. of gases 'from the working chamber ot the furnace.
The follower 13 has a series of slotted lugs 100 for the reception of nuts 15, which have outer heads 16 and inner flanges 17, whereby they are longitudinally confined to the 'lugs hut are tree to Jurn therein. the nut-s engaging f stud bolt-s 19 which project. longitudinally 105 from the casing 1.
tion serving .to release their 75 permit er the the follower is backedl olitjby 'proper'manipw lationfof the nuts' 15, it will pull thesections ofthe buslingwith it and thereby loosen the hold the same upon the electrode solas to removal, replacing or adjustment of thev latter, the bushing being` again tightenedy upon the electrode when the fol-I lower isagain moved forward,.or, if desired, the nuts 21 may be backed of before backing olf the follower, and, after the pressure ofthe packing upon the electrode and upon the ianges of the bushing has been relieved, the bushing m'ay be retracted by again tightening the nuts 21.
Surrounding the casing 1 is a stiifening and strengthening web 22, `terminating at the bottom yin a projecting flange 23, to
which may bel connected the bus-barns or otherl of the-bolts 19 in order to prevent injury to the attendants by Contact with the nuts or y bolts.
We claim:
l. An yelectrode holder for furnaces, said holder comprising a casingwith an internal adjustable clamp for the electrode, and an Loeenea 2. An electrode holder for furnaces, said /holder comprising a casing containing a clamp for the electrode, a compressible gaschecking ring surrounding the electrode and bearing upon the outerj/end of the clamp, and means for conipressin said ring.
3. An electrode holder or furnaces, said holder comprising a casing having a 'chamber at one end, a sectional bushing havin a flange movable within said chamber, a 0llower also movable in said chamber, and a mass: of packing confined between said fol.- lower and the ange of the bushing and bearing upon the electrode so as to prevent the escape of gas around the latter.
4C. An electrode holder for furnaces, said holder comprising a casing, a sectional bushing for confining the electrode therein, a follower, a mass of packing interposed between the' follower and the bushing, means for adjusting the follower and means connected to the bushing and engaging said follower lfor efecting outward movement of' the latter.Y
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to lthis; specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.- "f
