DEVICE FOR PREVENTING HENS FROM SETTING.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELIZA J. FULTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful In'iprovements in Devices tor Preventing Hens from Setting, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to care of live stock and is particularly designed to provide an attachment whereby hens may be prevented from setting upon their nests.

The present invention comprises a wire structure which is strapped to the body of the hen in such a manner that the hen may readily perambulate, but at the same time be prevented from setting.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hen, illustrating the present invention as attached thereto; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the attachment forming the subject matter of the present invention.

The attachment forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a pair of wire members bent upon themselves to form substantially rectangular U -shaped supports provided with dependent legs. These members are connected by vertically curved wire straps which are adapted to pass over the back of the hen. A series of straps are secured to the side members or support and adapted to encircle the body of the hen, thereby rigidly securing the device thereto. The dependent legs which are carried by the side member are 01' such a length that the legs of the hen are permitted tree action, but such that the hen in attempting to set will be stopped thereby.

Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates a single strip oi wire adapted to be retained on each side of a hen, provided with the hinged central loop 11. These loops are inwardly converging as illustrated in Fig. 2 and adapted to rest against the body of the hen, as illustrated. in Fig. 1. The terminals of the strip of wire 10 are bent downwardly to form the dependent legs 12 which have the bearing Specification of Letters Patent.

The terminals of the U shaped yoke members 1 1 are intertwisted with the wires 10, thereby forming a solid rigid connection. A strap 16 is secured by the loops 17 adjacent to each terminal of the wire 10, said st 'aps being retained in spaced relation by the loops 11. These straps are crossed upon each side of the hen, as illustrated at 18, and are stitched at said cross sections, thereby forming a means whereby the lower part of the body of the hen may be secured. One 01 the terminals of each strap 16 is provided with a buckle 19 which engages the opposite terminal of the strap.

From the foregoing it will readily be understood that the device is placed upon the hen as illustrated in Fig. 1, the straps 16 passing under the body 01 the hen, while the wires 10 are secured to each side thereof. The wires let rigidly engage the back of the hen as does the upper terminals of the straps 16. As the device is so placed on the hen that the same cannot be removed by the hen, it will clearly be understood that should the hen desire to set, the bearing terminals of the legs 16 will rest against the ground, thus preventing any such action on the part of the hen.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent, is:

1. In an attachment of the class described, a pair of horizontally disposed side members, vertical depending legs formed with the extremities of said members, a pair of inverted tl-shaped yoke members engaging the extremities of said side members, means for securing said side members adjacent to the sides of a fowl, means for securing said yoke members about the neck and rump of said fowl to prevent said fowl from assuming a sitting posture on a nest.
