Be it known that 1, ROBERT F. WHITNEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Winchester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hide-WVorking Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for fleshing, unhairing and working hides and consists of a novel arrangement and combination of the bed roll, pinch roll and feed roll; and it is an improvement upon the device described in Letters Patent of the United States issued to me October 6, 1908, No. 900,334. Its objects are to provide ample room between the rolls for introducing the hide into the machine; for counterbalancing the rolls; and also for shifting the pinch roll without removing it from the machine when it cannot be advantageously employed, as, for example, in treating short hides.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the machine in inoperative position. 1 ig. 2 is a side elevation of the machine looking from the left of Fig. 1. in inoperative position. F 3 is a side elevation of the machine looking from the right of Fig. l in Opera tive position.

The main frame of the machine consists of the side frames 1. connected by the tie girts 2. The work roll 3 is mounted on the shaft 4 journaled in bearings in the frame and provided with operating blades 5. The bed roll 6 is mounted on the shaft 7 journalcd in boxes 7 in the swinging arms 8 pivoted at 9 to the frame. The rollers 7" are mounted preferably loosely on the shaft 7. The feed roll 10 is mounted on the shaft 11 journaled in hearings in the swinging arms 12 pivoted at 13 to the frame; to which arms 12 are pivoted the rods 14 which extend through the upper part of the frame in loose engagement therewith and are furnished on their outer ends with the nuts 15 which engage said frame and limit the downward travel of said rods. Upon these rods 14 are adjustably arranged the springs 16 which provide cushions for said feed roll 10. The pinch roll 17 is mounted on the shaft 18 our- Specification of Letters Patent.

The rollers 18 are mounted preferably loosely on the boxes 18 Cushions for the pinch roll are provided by the springs 21 which are arranged upon the rods 22 pivoted to the arms 23 which are pivoted to the frame at 24; said rods 22 being furnished with nuts 25 and engaging the frame as above described.
The swinging arms 8 are moved about their pivots 9 by the toggles (toggle joints) 26, comprising the links 27 pivoted to said swinging arms at 28 and the links 29 pivoted at 30 to the rocker arms 31, said rocker arms being pivoted at 32 to the frame. The rods 33 are pivoted at 34 to said rocker arms 31 and extend downwardly through the lugs 35 on the frame and upon their lower ends are screwed the nuts 36 which engage said lugs and limit the upward movement of said rods. These rods 33 are furnished with adjustable nuts 37, between which and said lugs 35 are adjustably arranged the controlling springs 38 adapted to be compressed by the downward movement of said rods and to react to raise them. The longitudinally adjustable crank rods 39, 39" are pivoted at their upper ends to the toggles (toggle joints) 26 and at their lower ends to the crank-gear 40 and crank 40, respectively, which are fixed to the crank-shaft 41 mounted on the frame. From the left of the frame (Figs. 1 and 2) is projected a gear box, or bracket, 42, whereon are mounted the rotary shaft 43 and the studs 44, 45 and 46.
The work roll shaft 4 has secured to its right end the pulley 47 whereby it is independently driven; the bed roll shaft 7 has secured to its left end the gear 48 and to its right end the gear 49; the feed roll shaft 11 has secured to its right end the gear 50; the pinch roll shaft 18 has secured to its right end the gear 51.
The pulley 52 and pinion 53 are mounted on the shaft 43; the compound idler 54, 55 is mounted on the stud 44; the idler 56 is mounted on the stud 45; the gear 57 has secured to it the driving member 58 of a clutch, the driven. member 59 of which is secured to the gear 59, all being mounted on said stud 46.
The clutch mechanism is operated by the treadle 60 loosely mounted on the crankshaft 41 and connected with said mechanism by the chain 61 running over the guide sprocket 62 mounted on the frame. The clutch mechanism is not more particularly described as it forms no part of the present invention and has been fully described by me in prior patents. My invention has to do with the location and mounting of the rolls and their movements and interaction, irrespective of the means employed to start and stop the machine, and should such means comprise a clutch, such clutch may be of any desired description.
. The rolls are cushioned, as is customary, to take care of inequalities in the hide; The bed roll 6 by the springs 38; the feed roll 10 by the springs 16; the pinch roll 17 by the springs 21 011 the rods 22 pivoted to the swinging arms 23, which rest upon the rollers 18*, when the rolls are operating.
The operation is as follows: hen in the inoperative position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the rollers 7 on the bed roll shaft 7 engage and support the lower ends 12 of the swinging arms 12, which engage and support the rollers 18 on the pinch roll shaft boxes 18; so that the weight of the bed roll 6, arms 19 and pinch roll 17 is supported by the swinging arms 8; while the weight of the arms 12 and roll 10 and the load of the compressed springs 16 is supported partly by the frame (pivots l3) and partly by said swinging arms 8. By this arrangement of the rolls ample room is left for adjustment of the hide over the pinch roll 17 and bed roll 6 preparatory to bringing the rolls together. When the rolls are separated and power is applied to the pulleys 47 and 52, the former drives the work roll 3, and the latter drives the pinion 53, compound idler 5d, idler 56, driving clutch gear and driving member of the clutch 58, the remaining gears being at rest. To bring the rolls together the operator depresses the treadle 60 thereby engaging the clutch members 58, 59 and driving the clutch member 59 and its gear (pinion) 59 crank-gear 40 and crank 40, thereby straightening the toggles (toggle joints) 26 and causing the bed roll shaft gear 48 to engage the pinion 53 and be driven thereby; the bed roll shaft gear 49 to engage and drive the feed roll shaft gear 50, and the latter to engage and drive the pinch roll shaft gear 51. hen the rolls come into engagement as described, the clutch members are disengaged automatically by any suitable means, as by the arrangement indicated. \Vhen the hide has been operated upon, the
operator again engages the clutch members by depressing the treadle, thus rotating the crank shaft and carrying the rolls into the original inoperative position, when the clutch members are again disengaged as above set forth. The drawings show the rolls with their shafts journaled in bearings mounted in swinging arms, but such shafts may be j ournaled in bearings mounted in guideways and movable therein by swinging arms or their equivalents; and I claim broadly the combination of rolls whose shafts are journaled in movable boxes with means for moving such boxes and thereby bringing such rolls together or separating them. hen the rolls are together, the hide is held against the feed roll 10 by the bed roll 6 below and by the pinch roll 17 above; and against the work roll 3 by said bed roll 6. As the rolls come together, the bed roll swings in under the feed roll and itsrollers roll out of engagement with the swinging arms 12, permitting said arms to swing downwardly until they are supported by the rods 14:;and the pinch roll 17 has meanwhile rolled upon the feed roll 10 carrying its rollers out of en gagement with the swinging arms 12; the result being that when the machine is in operation, there is no weight upon the bed roll 6 and very little weight upon the swinging arms 8. The pinch roll may be lowered out of the way without removing it from the machine simply by swinging it around, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
It is obvious that rollers 7 may be dispensed with and that swinging arms 12 may be adapted to engage roll 6 or its bearings directly; it is also obvious that rollers 18 may be dispensed with and that roll 17 or its bearings may engage swinging arms 12 directly.
Among the advantages secured by the arrangement described are the following: First: Ample room is provided for manipulating the hide. Second: Provision is made for using one feed roll or two feed rolls (feed and pinch roll), as desired. Third: The swinging arms 12 with their lower ends 12 provide a track for the pinch roll. Fourth: Cushions for the pinch roll are provided by springs independently mounted. Fifth In operation the superimposed weight and pressure are removed from the bed roll. Sixth: The pressure between the pinch roll and feed roll is substantially vertical. Seventh: The swinging arms 12 with their load assist the toggles to raise the bed roll, thus acting as a counterbalance. Eighth: The springs 16 are compressed as the arms 8 move downwardly and are thereby prepared to assist the toggles to raise said arms, thus acting as a counterbalance. Ninth: Provision is made for stopping the rotation of the bed roll, when disengaged from the driving mechanism.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isr 1. A hide working machine comprising the frame, and mounted thereon: the work roll 3; bed roll 6 mounted in swinging arms 8 and furnished with rollers 7 feed roll 10 mounted in swinging arms 12, whose lower ends 12 engage said rollers 7 and pinch roll 17 mounted in swinging arms 19 pivoted to said swinging arms 8, and furnished wit-h rollers 18*, which engage said swinging arms 12; with means for actuating the swinging arms 8 and thereby bringing the rolls into and out of engagement; substan tially as described.
2. A hide working machine comprising the frame, and mounted thereon: the work roll 3; bed roll 6 mounted in swinging arms 8 and furnished with rollers 7 feed roll 10 mounted in swinging arms 12, whose lower ends 12 engage said rollers 7 and pinch roll 17 mounted in swinging arms 19 pivoted to said swinging arms 8, and furnished with rollers 18", which engage said swinging arms 12; one or more of said rolls being spring controlled; such controlling springs; with means for actuating the swinging arms 8 and thereby bringing the rolls into and out of engagement; substantially as described.
3. A hide working machine comprising a frame, and mounted thereon: a work roll; a bed roll mounted in swinging arms and furnished with rollers; a feed roll mounted in swinging arms adapted to engage said rollers; and a pinch roll mounted in swinging arms pivoted to said swinging arms of the bed roll and furnished with rollers adapted to engage said swinging arms of the feed roll; with means for actuating said swinging arms of the bed roll and thereby bringing the rolls into and out of engage-- ment; substantially as described.
4. A hide working machine comprising a frame, and mounted thereon: a work roll; a bed roll mounted in swinging arms and furnished with rollers; a feed roll mounted in swinging arms adapted to engage said rollers; and a pinch roll mounted in swinging arms pivoted to said swinging arms of the bed roll and furnished with rollers adapted to engage said swinging arms of the feed roll; one or more of said rolls being spring controlled; such controlling springs; with means for actuating said swinging arms of the bed roll and thereby bringing the rolls into and out of engagement; substantially as described.
5. In a hide working machine, the combination of a work roll; a bed roll movable to and away from said work roll and furnished with rollers; a feed roll mounted in swinging arms, which engage said rollers; and a pinch roll mounted in swinging arms and furnished with rollers, which engage said swinging arms of the feed roll; with means for bringing the rolls together and separating them; substantially as described.
6. In a hide working machine, the combination of a work roll; a bed roll movable to and away from said work roll and furnished with rollers; a feed roll mounted in swinging arms which engage said rollers; and a pinch roll mounted in swinging arms and furnished with rollers which engage said swinging arms of the feed roll; one or more of said rolls being spring controlled; such controlling springs; with means for bringing the rolls together and separating them; substantially as described.
7. In a hide working machine, the com bination of a work roll; a bed roll mounted in swinging arms and movable to and away from said work roll and furnished with rollers; and a feed roll mounted in swinging arms which engage said rollers; with means for bringing the rolls together and separating them; substantially as described.
8. In a hide working machine, the combination of a work roll; a bed roll movable to and away from said work roll and furnished with rollers; and a feed roll mounted in swingingarms, which engage said rollers; with means for bringing the rolls together and separating them; substantially as described.
9. In a hide working machine, the combination of a work roll; a bed roll movable to and away from said work roll and furnished with rollers; and a feed roll mounted in swinging arms, which engage said rollers; one or more of said rolls being spring controlled; such controlling springs; with means for bringing the rolls together and separating them; substantially as described.
10. In a hide working machine, a spring controlled roll; the controlling springs being mounted on rods, which engage the frame of the machine and are pivoted to swinging arms; and said roll being mounted in swinging arms adapted to carry said roll into and out of engagement with said first mentioned swinging arms; substantially as described.
11. In a hide working machine, in combination, a bed roll mounted in swinging arms; a pinch roll mounted in swinging arms pivoted to said first-mentioned swinging arms; and a feed roll; said pinch roll being capable of being moved out of operative position and the bed roll and feed roll being movable into operative position while said pinch roll is in inoperative position.
