STITCH-INDENTING MECHANSM.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 26, 1912. Serial No. 733,570.
EL dit' :ac/mm. it may concern:
Bc itknown that. l, ld ject of the King oi? Prussia, residing at Cannstatt-Stuttgart, in the Kingdom of lirurttembcrg and German Empire, have in vcn'ticd certain neiv and useful lnip'i'ovx ments in 'Stitclrindenting Mechanism, citi which the following is a speeiiication.
My invention relates to machines 'for working on boots, sho-cs or the like oi any hind, and particularly to a machine tor soling or seeurin.;` the sole to the other parts of the boots. shoes or the like, and providing at the saine tiniethe Welt. oi the sole with the customary ornamentation of the.
iorm' of parallelly disposed. notches.
Heretoforc in thc niaini'l'acturc of boots, shoes oi' the like by machinery, the solingand the notchinzgj of .the welt. has been performed in two distinct working,l operations, and separate machines have been employed :t'or performing these o pci'at ions. 'lh is inode of Working involving;` two distinct' opera-- tions and separate 'n'iachincs therefor 4has various disadvantages and to obviatc said Vdis'a-dvantages mac-.hines have already been devised for notchingj` and stitching sii-nulmneously. Butv the known devices 't'or pertoruiing these two operations sin'lultancoustg7 present the disadvantage, that they do noi secure the i'iotohes being' located exactly to 'the side'oi: the stitch-holes in order to obviate injury to the thread.
The object ot' the invention is to remove this disadvantage of the known machines for 'simultaneously stitching the sole and This is accomplished by arranging the notcliing tool in such a man- Iier on. the stitchingta-ble of the machine that during the stitching opera-tion, that is to say, simultaneouslyjwith every formation` .of a stitch,- the welt is` notched that is to say, a notch is formed by said tool close by or to theside ot' Athe stitch hole.
My invention is shown in the accompanyingdrawings. i
Figure l is a side View of a soling may" chine provided With the improvedhrrangement, Figs. 2 and 3 are .sectioiial`views of the stitchingtable and presser member in two diiterent positions'.
The arrangement for notching the Welt may be advantageously employed in soling machines ot' any desired construction. The drawings show a soling machine of the known kind comprising a stitching table a,
nns'r MAmR, a suba presser mcniber z' located above said stitching` table, and an arrangementJfor periodically depressing i l.. The arrangement for opera-ting the presser member z' consists of a cam-or groove-id disk randa double armed lever l, the oneI arm of which rests against the top end of the presser member While a roller m is attached to the other arm of the lever which bears against the periphery ot the cam disk le. The material to be stitched is placed between the stitching table a and the presser member z' and is pressed against the stitching table by the presser member Which is actuated by the cam disk. Any suitable means maybe employed for feeding t-he material to be' stitched; for instance this may be accomplished by the presser member moving periodically si'dewise and simultaneously also forwardly, or, after raising the presser member, by means of the cam disk provided for the purpose with a raising tace 701, it may be performed through the medium of any other suitable mechanism.
A slot t) is arranged on the stitching table o, which serves for the reception of the needle c. The notchino' tool comprises a blade or knife d which is tirmly mounted in the stitching,` table. The knife (Z acts to produce the channeled depressions or notches on the sole or its Welt.. The location oi this notching tool (Z in relation to the needle c is suchthat; ay depression or notch is formed immediately close by or to the side of the stitch. A lifting' plate or support c which is vertical'lyadjustable is arranged on or inthe stitching table close to and in advance ofv tool o?. Then not in opera' the notchinn' tion this plate c lies inv about the same horizontal plane as the cutting' edge oil the notehinnr knife., so that the material to be operated on may slide unhindered over the notching tool during the feedingr of thev same by the presser member or the like. Only during,r the stitching operation, z'. e., when the needle forms the. stitch.' the "presser member i is pressed-down against the sole to be notched by means of a suit able raised part 7a2 of tl. am disk ,7c and the sole is pressed against the immovably arranged notching tool. The plate e is at the same time also pressed down fromA the position shown in Fig. 3 to that in Fig. 2. In this manner the material to be operated on is simultaneously stitched and 'provided the member I"shoivn in Fig] `close by or to the side of the stitch hole. A spring g is providedl for raising the plate e Vwith the material' or work to be operated on, when the presser member is being lifted clear of the-Work.A v
The plate e is formed with pins or bolt-s f (one only being visible in the drawing) which pass through. the stitching table' of the soling machine and serve for guiding the said plate e. These pins` f are provided at their lower ree ends with screw threads adapted to receive and retain the nuts h. By tightening the nuts It more or less the distance to be taken up by the plate from the stitching table may be exactly regulated or the height of the plate c may be brought into accordance With the height of the cutting edge of the notching tool d.
l/Vhat I claim isi l. In a soling machine, the combination with the reciprocating needle, a stitching table and a presser oot above. said table,
'of a notching tool mounted in said table, a f movable plate supporting the Work and yielding means for lifting said plate.
Q. In a soling machine, the combination with a reciprocating needle, a stitching table and a presser for," above said table, of a notching tool mounted in said table, a
movable plate supporting the Work and a.
spring in the table 4below said plate, for yieldingly keeping said plate with the work in lifted position.
3. In a soling machine, the combination With a reciprocating needle, a stitching table and a presser foot above said table,
of a notching tool mounted in said ible, a movable plate, supporting the` work, a
,spring in the table below saidy plate for -yieldingly keeping the plate and the Work .in liftedposition, and pins for guiding-said plate.
et. In a soling machine, the combination with a reciprocating' needle,v a stitching table and a presser :toot above said table, of a notching tool mounted in said table, a movable plate, supporting the Work, a spring in the table below said plate for yieldingly keeping the plate and the kWorkin lifted position, and pins for guiding'said plate, and adjustable stops on said pins for controlling the litted'position of said plate.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature lin presence of two Witnesses.
