Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Gnannas 7. Bones- NEH, a citizen of the United States, residin at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vehicle-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of vehicle lamps in which the flame chamber opens at the front or rear end, or both, and is provided with a chimney which is surrounded, as well as the flame chamber, by a descending air passage, which receives the air for the support of the flame at the top and conducts the air downwardly to the burner. In lamps of this kind the oil font has usually been inserted into the lamp body frombelow andsecurcd by fastening de- 'vices of"various construction. These fastening devices'often ermit the oil font to drop out of the lamp ody and be lost when thefastenings are not properly tightened by negligence or inadvertence or when they have become impaired by use.

The object of this invention is to avoid this difliculty by constructing the lamp body with a closed base or bottom ortion into which the oil font is inserted t rough the flame chamber and in which the oil font is securely supported and confined.

Referring'to the construction of the lamp represented in Figs. 1-7, A represents the main portion of the lamp body which has up roximately the form of a horizontal cylllK er which is open at the front where it is provided with a door having a glass or ens 21. 13 represents a lining arranged within this main portion A and spaced therefrom so that an air assage 22 is formed between these parts. Tiis lining operates both as a flame chamber and as a reflector and is preferably of approximately cylindrical form and closed at the rear by a concave reflector 23. A chimney; 24 extends upwardly from the lining and is surrounded by an upright cylindrical wall 25 which is open at the top and surmounted by an air injecting flange 26.' The air for the support of the flame enters the upper end of the annular passage between the chimney and the surrounding cylindrical wall and passes downwardly through this passage and through the passage between the lining and the body of the lamp in a well known manner. The main portion A of the lam casing is provided with 'a closed base formm a pocket or receptacle for the 0il font D into which the latter is inserted from above. For that purpose the lower portion of the lining B is provided with an opening 27 of suflicient size to permit the oil font to be inserted into the bottom pocket or recc tacleC and to be removed therefrom. '1 10 opening 27 is closed, when the oil font is in position, by a plate 28 which is socured to the burner cone 29 above the skirt 30 thereof having perforations 31. This plate has the same curvature as the lining B and is provided with perforations 32. The burner cone 29 and the cover plate 28 secured thereto surmount the burner which has the usual body 33, wick tube 34, perforated gallery and wick raiser shaft 36. The lamp body isprovidcd in its side with 37 through which the wick raiser sha t projects and which is covered on the inner side of the body by a shield 38 which is'securcd to the skirt of the burnercone. The air descending through the passage outside of the liningQ supplies the chamber through {the perforations .32 in the' cover plate 28. The latter'and the'conese:

cured thereto are held in position by catches 40 which engagegigainst the edge of th'e'lin ing surrounding the opening 27. The plate is provided at the front with a finger piece 41 for conveniently manipulating the same. In order to place the oil font and burner in position, the front door is openedand the oil font passed'through. the opening 27 in the lining into the pocket or receptacle C, where the font is seated on the bottom of the pocket. The burner cone and the cover plate secured thereto are then placed in position and secured to the lining. The oil font is in this manner securely attached to the lamp body. and prevented from being lost, while s )eeial fastenings for the oil pot are rendered unnecessary.

If desired, the cover plate'can be separate from the burnercone'and the latter mounted on. the oil font, as represented in Figs. 8-12. In tl1ese,figures, 42 represents the burner cone, which is mounted on the oil font, and43 represents the shield which covers the opening for the wick raiser shaft and which is secured to the oilfont. This shield may be providedin its side with a notch 44 for accommodating this shaft. 45 represents the cover plate, which is provided with an opening 46 of snilieient size to clear the burner cones This plate has at .its rear side a shouldered arm 47 which engages in a slot 48 in the lining B and at its front side a catch 49 and finger piece 50.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a lamp, the combination of a body having a closed base, a lining in said body forming the flame chamber and having in its lower portionabove said base an opening for the insertion of an oil font, an oil font provided witha burner and adapted to he passed through said opening into said base, and means for closing said opening around said burner, substantially as set forth.

2. In a lamp, the combination of a body having a closed base, a linin in said body which forms the flame eham er and has in its lower portion above said base an opening for the insertion of an oil font, an oil font adapted to be passed through said opening into said base and provided with a burner, and a cover which closes said opening around said burner, substantially as set forth.

3. In a lamp, the combination of a body having a closed base, a linin in said body which forms the llama eham mr and is separated from said body by. an air passage, said lining being provided above said base the lining and the body, an oil with an opening for the insertion of an oil .font, a chimney -extending upwardly from said lining, an outer wall surrounding said chimney and separated therefrom by an air passage which leads to the passage between font adapted tofbe passed through said opening into said base and provided with a burner, and a cover which closes said opening around said burner, substantially as set forth.

4. In a lamp, the combination of a body having a closed base,.a lining in said body which forms the flame chamber and has. in its lower portion above said base an opening for the insertion of an oil font, an oitfont adapted to be passed through said opening into said base and provided with a burner, 11 cover plate which extends over said opening around the burner, and a burner cone secured to said plate, substantially as set forth. t.

5. In a lamp, the combination of a body having a closed base, a lining in saidbody which forms the flame chamber and has-in its lower portion above said base an opening for theinsertion of an oil font, an oil font adapted to be passed through said opening into said base and provided with a burner, and a cover plate which closes said opening around said burner and is providedwith catches by which said connected with said lining, substant1ally as set forth. f

6. In a lamp, the combination of a body having a closed base, a linin in said body which forms the flame chain )GI and is separated from said body b an air passage, said lining being )rovidetl above said body with an opening or the insertion of an Oil font, an oil font adapted to be inserted through said opening into said base, a burner on said font, a burner cone having its skirt provided with perforations and arranged in said air passage between the lining and the body, and a perforated cover plate surrounding the cone above said perforations and covering said opening around the cone, substantially as set forth.

7, In a lamp, the combination of a body having a closed base and provided in its side with an o ning for a wick raiser shaft, a lining in said body which forms the flame chamber and has in its lower portion above said base an opening for the insertion of an oil font, an oil font adapted 'to be passed through said opening into said base and provided with a burner having a wick raiser shaft, means for closing said opening in said linin around the burner and a shield arrangct on the inner side 0- said opening for the wick raiser shaft, substantially as net forth.

8.
