CHARLES L. SLADINSKA,

PIVO'IED PLOW-CARRIER AND ITS OPERATING MECHANISM.
Original application filed September 28, 1911, Serial No. 651,870.
A September 19, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. Snannvsnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fountain City, in the county of Buit'alo, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in livoted Plow-Carriers and Their Operating Mechanism; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to beet harvesters, and is a divisional application of my copeuding application filed September 28, 1911, Serial No. 651,870.
An object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character having a single vertically movable beam upon which the 310WS are arranged, the plows being mounted for sliding movement toward and away from each other on opposite sides of the beam, thus adapting the beet digging part to suit various conditions of soil and plants.
With the above objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be'made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3*3 Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line Fig. 2.
:teferring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates an axle, the outer ends of which are equipped with ground wheels 11. The axle is arched centrally in the form of an inverted U as shown at 12.
The main frame consists of parallel horizontal floor bars 13 which are secured to the outer sides of the arch and the rear ends of which are inclined downwardly, as shown at 14. The floor beams are connected by cross beams 15. L-shaped hangers 16 are loosely mounted at. their upper ends upon the axle, and to the vertical legs of these hangers are bolted rearwardly extending bars 17 which are in turn bolted to the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, .1913.
Divided and this application filed Serial No. 721,240.
downwardly inclined rear ends of the floor bars and thus anchor the hangers stationary. The horizontal legs of the hangers are bent toward each other near their forward ends as shown at 21 and form attaching means for the vertically mo able plow beam about to be described.
The plow beam is composed of two parallel bars 22, the rear ends of which are plvotally connected by means of pivot bolts 23 to the extremities 21 of the hangers, the free ends of these bars being bent outwardly to form foliage bunching lingers 23. Disposed on the outer sides of the bars are alined U-shapcd guide loops 24;, and within each loop is slidably disposed a block 25, connection between the block and loop being made by a pin 26 passed through the block and working in slots 27 formed in the sides of the loop.
A cylindrical stem 28 is disposed vertically in each block and is equipped at the lower end with a plow 29. The stem is orificed to receive the pin 26 so that the plow is anchored to and moves with the block. For moving the plows toward or away from each other, bell crank levers 30 are pivoted at their elbows in U-shaped brackets 31 fixed to the bars 22 near the bunching fingers, pivot pins 32 being passed through the legs of the brackets and elbows of the bell crai'lk levers to attain this end. One leg of each bell crank lever extends rearwardly and is connected to the related sliding block through the instrumentality of an interlocking eyc connection 33.
An upwardly and rearwardly inclined rod 3% is secured by a toggle lever 3st to the free leg of each bell crank lever and extends through a bracket 35 carried upon one of the cross bars 15, and is then equipped with a grip 3G by means of which the operator may pull or push the rod in order to move the plows toward or away from the plow beam or bars 22.
As above stated, the bars 22 are pivoted to the hangers 16, and for rocking the bars, oppositely bowed links 37 are bolted at their lower ends to the bars, and between the upper ends of the links is inserted the lower end of a lifting rod 38, a pivot bolt 39 being passed through the parts to attain. this end.
The lifting link is connected to a bell cranl lever 40 which is pivoted at its elbow on a shaft ii, the ends of which are 3ournaled in the floor bars 13. The bell crank lever is connected by a link 42 to an operating lever 43. A spring latch 44L carried by the lever engages in a notched segment 45 and holds the lever in any adjusted position. It is thus seen that the plow beam may be raised and lowered as desired to enable the foliage gathering fingers and the plows to properly perform their function. Furthermore, it may be seen that the plows are movable simultaneously toward and away from each other so that rows of beets of various widths may be effectively uprooted.
Downwardly extending fingers 46 are secured to the bars 22 for picking up the foliage in advance of the plows. A draft tongue 47 is secured to converging bars 48 which are braced by braces 49.
What is claimed is:
1 In a beet harvester, a wheeled axle, a frame thereon, a normally horizontally disposed plow beam pivotally attached at the rear end to said frame, plows on opposite sides of said beam movable toward and away Copies of this patent may be obtained for from the beam, means for moving vertically the free end of said beam, and means for simultaneously adjusting said plows toward or away from said beam.
2. In a beet harvester, a wheeled axle, a frame thereon, a vertically movable horizontally disposed plow beam pivotally attached to said frame, U-shaped guide members'on opposite sides of said beam, a block slidably fitted in each of said members, a plow having a stem projecting through each block, means operatively connected to said stem for moving the blocks longitudinally in the guide members and adjusting said plows toward or away from the beam, and means connected to the free end of said beam for rocking said beam vertically.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signa ture, inthe presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES L. SLADINSKA.
