RIPPER FOR SEM 'ING-ILVLACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, E313.
Application filed January 7, 1913, Serial No. 740.674.
f 261; 'oncervi: thfit l, JULIA l3. Rivnxunnn r county oi Norfolk, State a us, have invented certain new and i in'iproveinents in Rippers for Sewi :5 of which the following is i 7 ar ossification reference being e accompanying drawings, in
this invention is to provide 1e attachment which may be readily l. l ctached and which when in 7. due will utilize the reciproi the needle bar for operating a -lso utilize the regular he machine for drawing be ripped -dust the edge of ot-omitting ripper liladc, as more iull hereinafter Forth.
In the drawing a designates a suitable; siandard adap tcd 1= be iigilly but detachably attached to 2 top of the sewing machine a one do oi ihe needle bar. Mounted upo this standard is a bent arin b, the means 1' mount ng this arm consisting of a suitaoie provided with a thumb-nut the arm be provided with a vertical slot 4/ for the purpose 01 vertical adjustment of the arm in At free extremity the arm formed into a fiat faced ear 0 and to one face of this ear is pivoted bynieans of a suitablescrew pivot f, a hell crank lever g, one of whose LlZlllS \iQPCIKlS toward the machine top and the other of whose arms exw ll toward the needle barn ii in isprovidcd .ulapted to igcd ()(Cl' the projc 'w head of the usual needle securing of the needle bar 'ihc depending arm of the bell crank has a lateral extending ear j upon the upper" face of which is removably fastened the flat rippc" elude Jr whose forward edge feces awe e ie needle bar and lies in hori zontal plane and works close to the n hine top and is made very sharp. This h i removable in orde to permit blades or ous and hind 2 he substituted e anon order further to permit the blade to be removed and sharpened. it. will be observed that the reciprocation of the needle bar causes a simultaneous reciprocation of-the ripper blade and further that the usual teed ing mechanism of the sewing machine draws the. seam to be ripped against the edge Of the ripper blade.
To start the ripping action it is necessary 5 first to rip by hand a short distance of the seam so that the lower fabric may be started nough the feed mechanism and the ripper blade will lie in the line of the seam to be ripped. It is preferred that the needle of the machine shall he removed during the ripping action.
The vertical adgustment permits the device to be adapted to various kinds of Work.
orator.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i
1. A ripper attachment for sewing n1achines consisting of a standard or support, a laterall t projecting arm mounted thereon, an angle lever pivotally mounted on said arm and having one of its arms adapted for ene'a 'ement with the needle bar and the other of its arms provided with a ripper blade having a horizontal cutting edge, substantially as set'torth.
2. A ripper attachment for sewing inacliines consisting of a supporting means, an angle lever pivotally mounted on said supporting means, the axis of itslpivot being luirizontal, one of the arms of said angle lever being adapted for connection to the needle bar and the other of its arms extending downwardly to near the sewin machine top and provided with a ripper lade having a horizontal cutting edge facing away from the needle bar.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atlix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
