Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 15, 1913,
Application filed May 3, 1912. Serial No. 694.857. 7
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. Mnnnorrn G. STAND- LEY, a citizen of the United States. residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inllegister- 'ing-Stainps, of which the following is a specification reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hand stamps and has special reference to a hand stamp adapt-- ed to give a duplicate impression, one impression being on an article exterior of the same, as for instance a bill or receipt, and the other impression being on material held .within the same to constitute a register of the impressions made upon the exterior.
The principal obj ectof the invention is to improve the general construction of a stamp of this character.
A second object of the invention is to provide a stamp of this character wherein the inking Will-be accomplished by means of inking pads of the type such as are commonly used with the ordinaryhand stamp and wherein a pad of felt covered withcloth is impregnated with a suitable ink of a character that will readily lend itself to deposition on a surface pressed against the same.
With the above and other objects in View this invention consists in general of certain novel constructions. combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, andspecifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicatelike parts in the several views, and Figure 1 is a transverse section through a stamp constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a section at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective ot-a certain ink pad and a controlling a1 'angeinent therefor as used in connection With this stamp. Fig. fl is a detail View of a certain slide used in connection with the device. Fig. 5 is a detail View of a certain pad used for pressing a paper strip against certain (diameters.
The stamp as constructed in accordance with this invention consists in a casing 10 which is mounted upon a base casing 11 and is slidable therein, being prevented from ex cessive movement by intnrned' flanges 12 .t'ormed on theengaging portions of the two casings. Viithin the casing'lO there secured a frame 13 which carries a shaft 14, the latter being supported on the upper ends of springs 15 held in spring cases 16 supported on plates 17, the lower ends Where of pass through suitable slots in the casing 10 and are secured to the lower ends 11 so that the lower ends-of the springs are stationary with reference to the lower casing.
It. will be seen that by this construction whenever the casing 10 is forced downward into the casing 11 the springs 15 will be compressed so that when the pressure is removed the casing 10 will again mote upward. On the'lower end of the casing 10 .is supported a stain 18 havingflsuital'ile characters such as t e name of the firm using the stamp, the word Paid? or any other suitable inscription fiormed on the underside thereof. This stamp furthermore has a transverse slot 19 extending thereacross and connecting the two sides of the frame 13 and lying in this slot is a bearing 20.
Carried on the shaft 1% is a series of drums 21 each of which is provided ,Wit-li periph eral teeth 22. Each of the drums 21 isfurtherrnore provided with a flange 23 provided with teeth 24 between which are. suitable characters 25 as will he hereinafter described. In order to rotate-these drums 21 a recess 26. is formed in the side of the casing 10 and in this recess is a window 27 through which the teeth 24 project. Adjacent the upper part of the frame 13 is a secondcrossbar 28 and around the two cross bars 20 and 28 lying on each sideot the drums'2lis a series of endless bands Qlhaving printing characters 30 formed thereon. These endless bands furthermore are provided with notches 31 which'engage the teeth 22 on the drums 21. Each of these endless hands has a double series of characters theroonas for instance two sets of charactersrepresenting the months of 'the vear arrangedcousccin tively or two sets of digitssimilarly arranged. and these characters are so Spaced that when one such character as Jan. in
one setlies beneath the plate 90 the charac tor Jan. of the second set will lie above the plate 28. Hinged to each side of the this manner the ink pads beah' against the stamp 18 and the character. beneath the plate 20. I
When itis desired to impress the characters on the stamp and beneath thebar 20 shaft 34 consisting of a drum which carries a roll of paper 35. A haft 36 is likewise detachably supported in the frame 13 and on this shaftis wound the paper rolled off from the drum 34, the shaft 36 thus constituting a paper-receiving drum. The shaft 36 is furthermore provided with a ratchet 37 which is adapted for engagement with a toothed bar 38. which extends downward within the casing 10 and passes through a slot 39 t the outside-of the casing, the lower end of the bar being s pcured to thecasing 11 as at 40. The upper end of this bar is reduced so as to form a spring so thalr'the teeth thereon may yieldably engage with the teeth of the ratchet 37. Ateach side of thc'frame 13 there is carried.v a pair of spaced ribs 41 arranged to form a guidewherein slides a plate 42 provided with an opening 43 adjacent each of its sides. Secured to the easing 11 and extending inward through slots 44 are bars 45 each of which supports a cam consisting of two triangular plates connected at their apices as indicated at 46. These plates pass through the slots 43. The plate 42 normally projects over the bar 28 and on the underside of the plate is carried an inking pad 47 which normally bears against the character lying on top of the plate 28. Pivotally mounted on the frame 13 is an arm 48 which has a downwardly extending portion 49 terminating in a transverse portion 50. On the underside of this portion 50 is a pad 51 of felt, rubber, or the like. Attached to the opposite end of the arm 48 is a screw 52 whereon isan adjust-able collar 53 and this screw is arranged to pass through a stop member 54 secured upon the casing 11 so that provision is thus made for actuating the lever 48 at the proper moment. In the operation of this portion of the device it will be seen that as the casing 10 is depressed the plates 46 move upward with reference to the. plate 42 and the parts will remain in the a position shown in Fig. 1 so far as "regards the paper. the inking pad, and other like parts. until the cams 46 engage what may be termed the rear end of the slots 43 with their" inclined edges. This will then cause the plate 42 to move laterally within the guides 41 and when this plate had passed clear of the character lying on the bar 28, the stop 53 being properly set, the pad 51 will be forced down and carry with it the paper 35, thus causing the same to engage the characters on the bar '28 and receive an impression therefrom. At the same time, as previously described, the bill, or like piece. of paper,
' upon which the stamp rests receives a similar impression. When the stamp is released the teeth of the toothed bar 38 engage the teeth of the ratchet 37 and rotate the drum 36, thus moving the paper to bring a fresh portion in position for receiving the impression.
There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described, and for the purposes specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof and it is therefore not wished to confine the device to the. exact form herein shown and described, but itis wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a hand stamp, a casing, paper ribbon carrying rolls movably mounted within said caslng, a second casing supporting the first casing, said first casing being movable with reference to the second casing, means actuated by the movement of one of said casings with reference to the other to intermittently move said ribbon carrying rolls, duplicate sets of printing characters within the first casing, inking pads in said casings normally bearing against corresponding characters in each set, said pads being moved from said characters by the movement of one casing relative to the other. a pressure pad within the first casing, said characters and pad being supported to impress one of the corresponding characters on a surface exterior to the casing simultaneous to the actuation of the pad to force a paper ribbon carried by said rolls against the other corresponding character. 7
2. In a hand stamp. a casing, paper ribhon carrying rolls revolubly mounted within characters, means to move said pad away from said characters as one casing is moved with reference to the other, other inking pads hinged at the lower part of said casings and hearing against a corresponding character, the last-mentioned pads being yieldably held to move away from the last-mentioned character when one casing is moved with reference to the other, and a pressure pad Within the first casing, said characters and pad being supported to impress corresponding characters on a surface exterior to the casing, and a paper ribbon supported on said r011.
in testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
