UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE M. MCCORD, 0F MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO B. E. BEIGE, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
DISPLAY-RACK FOR ROOFING.
Application filed July 22, 1912.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE M. McCoIu), a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display- Racks for Roofing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a display rack for roofing, and has for its object to provide a simply constructed rack in combination with means for insertion within the ends of the rolls of roofing when separated from the rack which then may be applied to the rack with the rolls to support said rolls in position for display purposes.
It is also an object of my invention to provide a device of the above character such -that when the same is folded in position means will be provided for for shippin g retaining the roll receiving housing an arts.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and are particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, illustrating the application of my invention in one form, Figure 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 a front elevation of my device in open or operative position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same when closed. Figs. 4 and 5 show enlarged sectional detail views of the roll receiving members. Fig. 6 is a view showing the manner of housing the rollreceiving mem--- bers for shipment.
The rack proper consists of two side members 10 and 11 secured together at bottom and top by cross pieces 12 and 13, respectively, the cross piece 13 at the top being of such breadth as to form a surface for receiving an advertisement of the goods to be dis played. Pivoted at 14 and 15, respectively, to the side bars 10 and 11 are legs 16 and 17 secured together at the bottom by a cross bar or board 18. A chain 19 secured be tween cross bars 12 and 18 limits the spread of said legs 16 and 17, which, when at their outwardly extended limit will hold the parts in the relative position shown in Fig. 1. Formed in the said pieces 10 and 11 are a series of receiving notches 20 which extend downwardly into the body of said side members. Now, as is well known, roof' ing material is sent out in rolls in which the Specification of Letters Patent.

central cavity within the roll left by the withdrawal of the mandrel upon which the roll was formed is closed by a package of screws, nails, cement, etc., used in applying the roofing. It is therefore wholly impractical to use for display purposes a rack which requires the extension of a mandrel through the body of the roll. In place of such mandrel, therefore, I providesocket members adapted to be firmly seated within the ends of the cavity in the roll and thereafter suspend the roll fro-m the rack in freely rotatable position. These socket members each comprise a shaft 21 upon which is rotatably mounted a pulley-like member 22 somewhat tapered or cone shaped which is adapted to be inserted within theends of the cavity aforesaid in the rolls of roofing. The shaft 21 is turned at right angles and extended to a desired amount, as indicated at 23, and is again turned for a short portion 24 extending parallel with the main portion 21. A further right-angled bend 25 at the end of said shaft serves as a stop so that when the portion 24 of the shaft is inserted within the seats or sockets 20 in the side members 10 and 11 the shafts 21 will hang down between said side members and the portions 25 will hold the portions 24 from'withdrawal from within the sockets. The sockets thus are seen to be entirely independent of and freely removable from the side members 10 and 11. In applying rolls of roofing 26 to the rack the pulley plugs 22 upon the shafts 21 are independently driven within the ends of the cavity in the roll, for which purpose a mallet striking upon the portion 23 over the right-angled bend 27 thereof may be employed. The plugs 22 by this means are tightly wedged in and to the roll 26 which is then lifted and the portions 24 of shafts 21 applied to the seats 20 whereupon the rolls 26 will be held suspended between the frame pieces 10 and 11.
It is obvious that as many sets of seats 20 may be employed as may be desired. It is also obvious that this rack may be employed for displaying other forms of roll merchandise, such, for example, as wallpaper or oilcloth, although its utility for the display of roofing is especially high by reason of the incapacity of rolls of roofing for receiving a mandrel through the body of said rolls. It will be noted that when the rolls are in position the centers thereof hang on the arms 23 below the portions 24 so as to swing about said portions, thus insuring unrolling of the roofing without tendency to upset the rack in cases where, as will sometimes happen, the adjacent coils of roofing tend; to adhere one to the other.
When it is desired to prepare the rack for shipment boards 28 and 29 are screwed to the cross board 12, the socket members 22 are packed within this space in the manner shown in Fig. 6 and the cross board 18 on legs 16 and 17 is brought between the boards 28 and 29 which are then screwed to this cross boardlS.
It will be seen thatmy invention provides a simple and highly eflicient device for the purpose. The plug pulleys 22 become, after insertion within the roll, in effect integrally connected therewith so that the unrolling of the rolls and handling of the Same are rendered extremely efficient. If it is desired, a crank can besecuredto-pulley plugs 22 so that the rolling up of the roofing may be effected without handling the same.
I claim:
1. A display rack for rolls of material comprising side members provided with alined open-ended sockets and bent axles each having an arm thereof independently and removably held in said Sockets and having rotatably mounted upon another arm pulley plugs for insertion within the ends of the cavity through the roll.-
2. A display rack for rolls of material comprising side members provided with alined open-ended sockets, bent axles each having an arm thereof independently and removably held in said sockets and having rotatably mounted upon another arm pulley plugs for insertion within the ends of the cavity through the roll, and means for holding said first named arms within the sockets.
3. A display rack for rolls of material comprising side members provided with alined open-ended sockets and bent axles each having an arm thereof independently and removably held in said sockets and having rotatably mounted upon another arm pulley plugs for insertion within the ends of the cavity through the roll, said arms being parallel and offset one from the other so that the roll when positioned upon the rack will be held for swinging movement thereon.
4:. A display rack for rolls of material comprising the side members provided with alined open ended sockets, axle rods each comprising o-ifset portions extending in parallel relation in opposite directions at right angles to the connecting portion, one of said portions having a short bend formed at the end thereof for adapting the same to be removably positioned in the sockets, and tapered pulley plugs rotatably mounted upon the other parallel portions of the axle rods for insertion Within the ends of the cavity through the roll when the axles and plugs are removed from the rack.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
