JOHN G. FRIBERG, OF MAIDEN RQCK, WISGONSIN.
HORSE-COLLAR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. Fmnnno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maiden Rock, in the county of Pierce and State of WVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horse-Collars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to horse collars and the object of the invention is to provide a collar which may be cheaply constructed and which is so constructed that it will be con venient to adjust the same for large or small horses.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the upper half of the collar is entirely flexible and the lower half or that portion resting against the shoulders and surrounding the throat is made padded and stiff, the flexible portion being adjustably connected to a neck pad.
A further object of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper end of the collar. Fig. 3 is an enlarged top plan view. Fig. 4: is a section on the line 4.l: of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a similar section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
In the specific embodiment of the invention illustrated herein, the body of the collar illustrated at 1 is in the form of a U-shaped pad which is formed as is usual to receive the hames and which has its legs extending outwardly only to a point slightly beyond the line of draft. As shown in the drawing, the legs of the collar are continued beyond the pad in the form of straps 2 and 3 which are provided with a plurality of pairs of holes 4 adapted to be engaged by vertically projecting pins 5 secured to a pad plate 6 which is covered upon its under side by a suitable neck pad 7. This plate and its pad, which will be hereinafter generally spoken of as the neck pad, are entirely independent of the collar pad or its associated straps and the pad carries suitable guiding straps 8 which receive the ends of the collar straps Specification of Letters Patent.

2 and 3. These collar straps are formed as a part of the collar and, if desired, may be used as attachments with the neck pad for connection upon old collars where the same need repairing.
In order to secure the collar straps in position with their ends and in engagement with the pins 5, there is pivoted to one of the upturned ends of the plate (3, a clamping bar 9 which is depressed in its center as shown at 10 and at its opposite end is provided a latching hook 11 adapted to spring over the opposite upturned end of the plate (3. The bar is provided with a slot 12 which is adapted to permit the passage of the pins and the outer end of the latching hook 11 is upwardly turned as shown at 13 to provide a thumb engaging projection which forms a convenient means for releasing the bar from the plate.
The flexible collar straps permit free movement and at the same time provide simple means for adjusting the collar so that it may be used on large or small animals. Throughout the specification, the part 1 has been referred to as a U-shaped collar pad. In the claim, however, this same part will be termed connected shoulder pad. I wish it to be understood that it be accepted with the same definition.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, is
A horse collar comprising connected shoulder pads, a detached neck pad having projecting pins thereon, flexible straps connected to the shoulder pads and having apertures to receive said pins, a clamping bar pivoted to the neck pad and adapted to hold the straps upon the pin and said bar being slotted to receive the pins, a clamping hook on the bar adapted to clamp upon the edge of the pad for removably holding the bar in operative position, and guiding loops for the strap carried by the neck pad and arranged on opposite sides of the bar.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
