HOPPER-BDTTQM' CAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Julyti, HHS.
Application filed May18.1912. Serial No. 698.210
7'0 7/ iii/mm, it may 0021mm lie it known that T, Gnome Il. liannrr'r, a eitizen oi the. United States. residin; at Alhanv, in the County of" Alhany and State of New York have invented new and useful lmproven'ients in Hopper-liottom Cars, ot which the following: is a, spw'itiration.
This invention relates to railroad, mining:
and other cars whieh are provided with a hopper body, and it has partieular ret'erenee to the door or valve whieh eonstitutes the closure for the discharge opening of the hopper.
, The present invention may he, regarded as an improvement in the devire 't'or \vhieh 1,011,008 were granted to me on the 5th day of Deeemher, 1911. In this patent thereis shown a pivotally supported sector-shaped door constituting a casing which is used for ohstrueting the discharge opening of the hopper, means being provided for introt lucing into said casing heated fluid to raise the temperature thereof.
The present invention has tor its primary object to improve the eonstruetion of the door or valve, and the means For mounting, and operating the same.
A further object of the preaentz invention is to provide a special eonstrnetion involv ng the application of the invention to a hopper :ar wherein a stationai v ohstrueting member arranged above the discharge opening is provided, thereby providing two separate outlets, each eonnnun' -ating with the main discharge opening.
ith these and other ends in view whirh will readily appear as the nature ot the invention is better nnderstooih the same eonsists in the improved eonstruetion and novel arrangement and eomhination of parts which will he hereinafter fully deserihed and particularly pointed out; in the elaims.
in the ameom anrving drawing: has heen illustrated a simple and preterred 't'orm ot' the invention; it heing, o't eourse, unden stood that no limitation is neressarilv made to the precise strurtnral details therein evhibited, but that ehanfies. alterations and motfliiieatioua within the seope ot th appended claims may he made when desired.
In the drawing; l igure l is a soetional eleration showing a portion ot' a, hopper hotton'i ear equipped with the invention. Fig.
2 a transverse sectional view talv'en on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
orrespranliug parts in the several tig'ures are to be denoted h v like rharaeters ot' reterenee.
The 'ar l)od l\ is provided with int-lined hottom memhers li lt whit-h inellne toward the hottom aperture Supported trans verselv in the ear lied) ahove the diseharge opening (1 is an A-shaped ohstrm-tiin: memher l) the sides ot \vhinh diverge t'roni the apex thereof in the direetion ot' the hottoni members l li hut terminate some distanee tl'Ulll the latter so as to torn] separate out lets ll. eaeh ol' \\l)lt'll. however eonnnnnirates with the ventral diseharge opeuiu; The side menihers ol the obstructing memher I) arotprovided at their lower edges with flanges l" whieh are disposed at aonte angles to theside, memhers \\'llltll latter are separately designated by 5. Said tlanges I are also in approximate parallel relation to the hottom menihers li with \vhieh the) eooperate to form the ehntes or passages whieh eoust itute the outlets E.
livoted on a. ahat't t} whieh extends transverselv through the ear body; are the door memhen or valves 7 'aeh consisting of a seetor-shaped easing; having arms or lll'iK'littS Q whieh are pivotally mounted on the shalt The areuate plates 9 \vhieh eonstitute the fare plateH ot' the sretonshaped easingb. are extended beyond the end memhers it) ot said easing so as to tul'lll over-hanging flanges 11 on whieh areuate l'tH'liH 12 are mounted. 'lhese raelv's are engaged lrv pinions 123 mounted for rotation on the ear hodv and adapted to he, rotated by means ot a crank or \vrenrh tor the reception of Wlllt'll i'or eaeh oi the pinions provided a post or \vreneh seat 14-. it will he ohserved that whereas the load eontaintal in the ear impinges on the convex fares ot' the valves or easings, the pinions to are loeated between the eonrave taees ot' the raekearrving thing es 11 at the ends of said valves or easing. amt the shaft (3 whereon said valves or easings are supported, thus relieving the shat't (i from mueh direct: strain, therein slreugzt heulll l f (he eonstruetion and i'aeilitating' the up eratiou. (lonneetled with each of the arenate tan-dues is a flexible hose or duet 1.7 through which steam or other hatiug fluid may he admitted into the easing.
As will he Seen t'roni the toregoinodeseription taken in eonneetion with the drawinn. eaeh ot the door members or obstructing alves may he moved from an obstructing position to a non'obstructing position be the arcuate face plates 9 of the door members moving in engagement with the flanges F of the obstructing member. It is obvious that the extent to which the valves are actuated may be accurately gaged, thus permitting the contents of the hopper car toescape slowly or as rapidly as may be desired. It is also obvious that one or both of the doors or valves may be operated to permit material to escape from one or from both ends of the car, as may be desired. Through the tube 15 steam or other fluid may be introduced into the casings for the purpose of thawing ice obstructions when this shall be needed, as set forth in my previous patent to which reference has already been made. construction described, the power required to actuate the doors or valves will be applied to the latter at points which are distant from the axis about which they rotate, thereby greatly facilitating the operation of said doors or valves which is obviously important and desirable, especially when the car is heavily loaded with material which exerts considerable frictional energy against the arcuate faces of the doors.
Vhat is claimed as new is:-
l. A hopper bottom car having a discharge opening and an outlet communicating therewith, a shaft spaced from the outlct, a valve having arms pivoted on the shaft,
By the said valve consisting of an arcuate casin having a convex load supporting face an provided with flanges at the ends thereof, racks on the concave sides of said flanges, and pinions supported for rotation on the car body in engagement with said racks to support part of the load on the convex face of the valve casing.
2, A hopper bottom car having a discharge opening, an A-shaped obstructing member supported above the openin and having side members providedwith flanges arranged substantially parallel to the bottom members of the car to constitute separate outlets, a shaft supported transversely in the car between the outlets, valves consisting of arcuate casings having arms piv oted on the shaft and having convex load supporting faces which are terminally ex tended to form flanges that project beyond the end walls of the casin s, racks on the concave sides of said flanges, and pinions supported for rotation on the car body in engagement with said racks to support part of the load impinging on the convex. faces of the casing. I
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
