PRINTING-FORM.
Original application filed October G, 1909, Serial No. 521,355.
Serial No. 644,796.
To au whom t may concern lie it known that I, WILLIAM J. F. MAID- nor, a citizen oi.: the United States, and resident of the borough of Bronx, in the city and State oi New Yorl{,l1avc invented a new and useful improvement in PrintingForms, ol" which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing forms, with the object in view of providing novel means for supporting the bases of the type blocks whereby a clearer and more precise printing ettect may be obtained.
Another' object is to provide a novel means for irmly securing and adjusting the type blocks in the printing frame or chase.
A further object is to provide certain improvements in the form, Construction and arrangement of the several parts whereby the above-mentioned objects may be more effectively carried out.
This application is a division of my prior application Serial No. 521355, filed October 6, 1909, and now United States Patent No. 1,003,482, dated September 19, 1911.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a face view of the printing :form with a series of type blocks secured therein, Fig. 2 represents an edge View of the same, Fig. 3 represents a section taken in the plane of the line A-A of Fig. 1, and Fig. t represents a section taken in the plane of the line 13j-B ot Fig. 1.
The printing frame or chase is denoted by 1 and it is provided with a back plate 2 secured thereto by screws 3. The printing :trame is shown in the present instance as rectangular in form and its members are held together by screws 4;. Two opposite side members of the frame are provided with undercut vgrooves 5 fitted to receive the tongues 6 of the spacing bars 7, thus holding the said spacing bars in sliding engagement with the frame 1. These spacing bars are provided at their tops with lateral extensions 8 fitted to engage recesses 9 in the type blocks 10 for holding the type blocks against removal from the iframe with their bases against the back plate 2. One end member 11 of the frame forms a fixed spacing bar.
Adjusting screws 12 are pinned at 13 to the adjustable spacing bar 7 adjacent to the end member 14 of the frame. These screws Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1913.
Divided and this application filed August 18,
are held in position by the member 111 and are provided with nuts 15 bearing against the member 1.4i.
ln operation, the turning ot the nuts 15 in one direction will cause the adjustable spacing bars 7 to clamp the type blocks l0 lirmly in position between the spacing bars with the bases oit the top blocks resting on the back plate 2. iVhen the nuts l5 are turned in the reverse direction, the adjust* able spacing bars may be separated suiliciently to permit the removal o1 the blocks and the insertion of other blocks, as may be desired.
lit will be seen that a great variety both in number and size ot type blocks may be used in connection with my apparatus and that any desired relative arrangement oi the type block may be obtained. Furthermore, the 'tact that the chase or frame is provided with a back plate on which the bases of the type blocks rest, provides a very firm and ruiyielding printing form with the result that the characters upon the type blocks are printed upon the desired material in a clear and more precise condition than has hereto- :tore been obtainable.
It is to be understood that by the term type blocks any printing block is ineluded.
It is evident that various changes might be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement oit the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit mysell strictly to the structure herein set iorth, but
l. A printing 'form comprising a chase or frame having a back plate, fixed and adjustable spacing bars provided with a tongue and groove engagement with the chase and 'adjusting screws slidable in the chase and secured to move with the adjacent adjustable bar for moving the adjustable bar toward the ixed bar.
2. A printing iorm comprising a chase or frame having a back plate, a fixed spacing bar, a plurality ot adjustable spacing bars provided with a tongue and groove engagement with the chase and adjusting screws engaging the chase and secured to the adjacent adjustable bar ttor moving it and thereby the other adjustable bars into locking engagement with the type blocks.
A printing form comprising a chase or frame having a back plate, iXed and adjustable spacing bars provided With a tongue and groove engagement with the chase, adjusting screws having a sliding engagement With the chase and a fixed engagement With the adj aoent adjustable spacing bar and nuts Carried by the screws for moving the screws and thereby the adjustable spacing bar into clamping engagement with the type blocks.
4, A printing form comprising a chase or frame composed of a back and side and end members secured thereto, one end member forming a fixed spacing bar, a plurality of adjustable spacing bars having a tongue and 15 In testimony, that I claim the foregoing 20V as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two Witnesses, this sixteenth day of August 1911.
