To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR G. GAND- LAND, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Provo city, in the county of Utah and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rail fastening devices, and has for its obj cct to provide means for fastening railway rails securely on a metallic channel tie, and to provide a fastener which consists of but few parts and one that is easily placed in position and is adjustable to grip rails having different width base flanges. These and other objects which are apparent I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters ot retorence indicate like parts throughout the several figures and as described in the specifications forming a part of this application, and as pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a plan view 0f one end portion of a piece of sheet metal cut, but before it is bent into shape, to form a tie. Fig. 2 is the same after it is bent into shape. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section through one end of a tie and a portion of a rail secured thereon with my fastener, on line 2 of Fig. 4. Fig. 4-. is a transverse vertical section through an end portion of a tie, on line :0 :12 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of one of the rail chairs. Fig. 6 is a View in perspective of one of the rail clamps. Fig. 7 is a view in perspective of one of the liners. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of one of the bolts and nut therefor. Fig. 9 is a view in perspective of one of the cushion blocks. Fig. 10 is a modified form of rail chairs.
I have observed since filing my application for rail fasteners on September 3rd, 1912, Serial Number 718,401, that, in the construction and use of metallic ties of the channel shape, and the fastening ot' the rails thereon, the cost of manufacturing and laying a railway track may be materially lessened by cutting down the sides of the tie, and the fastening means made more positive by locking the rail engaging parts against lateral as well as longitudinal movement on the tie. My ties are made of sheet metal which is cut into the form shown in Fig. 1, and then bent into the form shown in Fig. 2, having the sides 1, not over four inches in height, and provided with longitudinal slots 2 therein. On ties of this shape I place my fasteners, which consist of U-shaped rail chairs (i and other co-acting elements. Each of said rail chairs has its end portions bent outward and upward to form hook members 7. Said rail chairs 6 are placed in position by springing the sides 1 of the tie out, or by springing the end portions of the said rail chairs toward each other until said hook members 7 may be inserted within said slots 2. Cushion blocks 3, having inclined sides and vertical ends are fitted below said chairs and within said tie. Each of said blocks has an open channel t cut in the upper side thereof and grooves 5 parallel therewith in the upper edges and longitudinal with said tie. Said blocks are made of wood, fibrous material or concrete having an asphaltum binder, and are placed adjacent said slots 2. In order to accommodate my fastener to rails having ditl'erent width bases, I bend the edge of each rail chair up as a flange 8, and to use a rail having a narrow base I place a liner 9 between each of said flanges 8 and the base flange of the rail adjacent. Rail clamps 10, each having an elongated circular hole 11 therein, are then placed adjacent said blocks on the inclined sides. It the liners 9 are used, the rail clamps 10 adjacent are inserted from above within the hook shaped ends 90 of said liners and said hooks 20 will hold the said clamps in contact with said block 3. Each of said rail clamps has the upper portion 19 bent at an angle to engage the base flange of a rail that is supported by said rail chair and block. Insulating material 13 may be used around said base flange to insulate said rail from said rail chair and clamps. A threaded bolt 1 L having a cone shaped head 15 on one end thereof is inserted through one of said clamps 10 in the elongated hole 11, beneath the rail chair (3, with the other end protruding through the said elongated hole 11 in the other clamp 10. A cone shaped nut 16 when screwed on said bolt will engage the lower end of the said elongated hole 11 and the bottom of said rail chair on one side of the said rail chair. while the cone shaped head 15 of the bolt will likewise engage the opposed clamp 10 and the opposite side of said rail chair and draw said clamps inward and downward in gripping eontact with the base flange of the rail.
