Application led lay 18, 18112. Serial No. 896,911.
To all whomz'tmay concern:
Be itl known that I, MEYER W. SCHLOSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic C ords or Strands, ofewhich v the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to elastic cords, strands or straps, the object being to provide such an article wit-h an exterior surface capable of affording a frictional grip when brought into engagement with a body or surface with which it may be associated. I have reference especially to garters and belts made of such elastic strands or straps wherein it is desirable that the belt or strap shall retain a certain position and hold a waist or stocking at the corresponding position. In connection with shirtwaists it is customary to employ a string at the waist-line to gather the lower edge of the garment and hold it in to the figure. But an ordinary string or tape permits the waist to slip up and disarrange its ii By using a belt or cord which has a good gripping surface, the waist will the better .be held in position. Likewise if an elastic garter strap such as commonly used by men is provided with a good gripping surface, it will remain in position above the calf of the leg better.
My invention, which is intended to supply the material from which such belts, garters and similar appliances may be made, consists of an'elastic cord. or strandhaving an el'astic corev such-as rubber and a covering of woven, braided, wrapped, or'other textile fabric, said covering having interlaced with it and exposed upon the surfa'cethereof a coarser or thicker cord or thread than the threads of which the textile covering is composed. This thicker cord or thread is associated with the threads of the covering in such a manner that it occurs along the length of the cord or strand at spaced apart intervals, presenting a series of projections, ribs, or ridges, or a continuous rib or ridge spirally or otherwise arran ed upon the surface of the cord or stran These projecx furnishes the ridge or ridges may tions when pressed intocontact with a garment enable the cord or strand'to grip the garment and retain its position thereon. As4
a means for increasing the gripping action, I also propose that this extra cord whicl be o rubber, since that material will take a better hold and permit of less slip than a ibrous cord having a different kind of surace.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side view, on a small scale, of a cord constructed in accordance with my' invention; Fig. 2 is an enlargedl detail View of a portionf of the cord shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a view of a fiat, tape-like cord also constructed in accordance with my invention.
a is an elastic core which may be composed of one or more strands of rubber as desired. b is the ordinary textile covering for the core which may be applied the-reto by a braiding, weaving, twisting, wrapping, or other suitable process, so long as the core may be permitted to stretch to a certain extent.
c indicates the associated thread or cord `of either fibrous material or rubber, which isf interlaced in any suitable way withthe threads of the covering b in order to hold it in place thereon, but which is considerably coarser or thickerthan the cords of whih the covering l) is composed, so asto aHord a projecting element 'or rid e wherever it ap'-A pears upon the surface o the finished article. This cord c is preferably so associated with the threads of the `covering that the ridges which it forms are spaced apart con-4 siderably so that therewill be a considerable depression between adjacent ridges.
In Fig. 3 the elastic tape or ribbon is composed of rubber strands a arranged all in one plane to form a band, which is covered on opposite faces with the textile covering b to which issecured, by interlacing in vany -suitable manner, the coarsegripping cord c.
The'material in either of these forms may be made up into shirtwaist belts and` is found to be very serviceable in holding the waist firmly in place. As a garter' the tape form of Fig. 3 is very serviceable in thatithe proand being exposed et intervals to present 10 jecting ridges, especially if of rubber, afford exterior frictional surfaces', as set forth. an excellent'l grip lupon the undergarment In Wit-ness whereof, I subscribe my signal above tllie caf of thedleg, preventing the ture, in the presence'of two witnesses,
f gHaving describdiy invention, I claim: ,Y v MEYER W' SCHLOSS' An elastic cor or strand comprising an Witnesses; elastic core, a textile covering therefor'andl a, WALDO M. CHAPIN, rubber corel interlaced!- with the covering WILLIAM C. vLAM'.
