UNITE `Srli/ IES T OFFICE,
OTTO RISON, 0F SEBEKA, MINNESOTA.
GASTER.
Be it known that l, O 'r'ro Risox. a citizen of the United lStates, residing at Sebeka, in the county ot `Wadena and State ot' Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casters, ot' which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in casters` and has 't'or its object to provide a' easter that can be operated over carpets, rugs and other tloor coverings, and having means to carry itself over wrinkles, inequalities in the tloor, etc. It is also possible to move objects from a slightly lower to a higher level of floor, the means employtal in my invention enabling this to be done without the necessity o'tI bodily lifting the, objects.
The lull objects and advantages ot' my inventionwill appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and are parv tieularly pointedout in the claims.
In the drawings, illustratingtl'ie application of my invention in onetorin, the ligure is a perspective view showing the features ot my invention in detail.
In this figure a spindle 10 is rotatably mounted either with or without ball bearings upon a frame 11 which is preferably stamped from a single piece and formed as shown by having its two sides 1.2 and 13 bent at right angles to the top platform 14. The sides 1Q and 13 are each provided with a pair ot' ears preferably of different length. The longer ears 15 are at the rear ot the 'frame 11 and the shorter ears 16 are at the trout thereof. Spindle shat'ts 17 and 1S are rigidly secured to the lower portion ot each pair ol ears, shaft 17 securing the longer ears 15, and shaft 1.8 joining the shorter ears 1G.` lotatably mounted on shaft 1.7 is a roller or wheel 19 ot the type usually employed 'for casters, but provided with a peripheral groove or slotl 20 about the eenv ter ot' said roller 19. Rotatably mounted on shaft; 18 is a roller or wheel 2t, smaller than roller 1t). Roller 19 is mounted on the `trame 11 so that its bearing point comes hack ot the axial line ot' spindle l0. Roller 9,1 is prelerably t'orward the axial line ot spindle l0. Passing over and joining roller 19 to roller 21 is a flexible member or end less chain 22 which tits into groove 20 and is so related in size to said groove that none of it. projects beyond the periphery ol roller 19. This flexible member is shown constructed of iron links, but vl do not wish Specification of Letters Patent. Application led April 18, 1913.4 Serial No. 761,970.
Patented J n l v 8, 191 3.
to be understood as limitingr myself to this t'orm as any tiexible material ot proper `size and strength would do the work, and ditlereilt materials might be preferable under ditl'erent conditions.
ln operation my invention would be applied to an object just as would the ordinary casters and under favorable conditions would operate in the same manner. It it was necessary to move the object over a rugl or carpet, however. my invention would enable this to be donc a great deal easier than with the ordinary castel'. Immediately after starting the object the roller 19 ot the easter would at once rotate on the spindle so that the roller 19 would be atI the rear of the axial line of spindle and would always keep the same position relative thereto. Upon reaching the edge of a rug or carpet thel ordinary caster would at once tend to shove the material bet'ore it, stopping all progress till the rug is smoothed or the object lifted bodily over the obstruction. My invention enables the caster upon coming to a wrinkle in a rug to engage therewith by means of the flexible member QQ and pull the easter over the wrinkle and at the same time operate to reduce the, wrinkle, both ot these results being highly desirable. ln passing over thresholds ot rooms or over inequalities in the surface ot the tloor my de vice enables the easter wheel to pass over readily because the flexible member practically lays a track over the inequality. M v device is simple. inexpensive and ot great utility. lt will lessen the labor and strain incident to the moving ot large objects to a great extent, and is so manifestly useful that. further enumeration is unnecessary.
The mode of operation ot' mv limproved caster and the advantages incident thereto having been `fully4 pointed out. l claim:
1. A caster comprising a spindle, a roller connected therewith having its bearing sur t'aee outside the axial line ot said spindle. and a flexible member cooperating with but independentot said roller to cause it to climb over inequalities in the floor or obstructions. l
2. A easter comprising a spindle, a roller connected therewith, said roller having va centrally located peripheral groove, and a flexible member ruiming within said groove and extending outside the tace ol the roller to draw rugs or other obstructitms beneath the roller.
3. A e; ster comprising` a spindle,`a bem@ ing roller connected therewith, n smaller` roller also connected therewith, and a flexible member running over Suid rollers to draw rugs or other obstructions beneath the bearing roller.
4. A cast-er comprising a spindle., a bearing roller connected therewith having u centrally locatid peripheral groove, a, smaller roller also connectedv to Said spindle, and :1
flexible member on said rollers and extending Within said groove to draw rugs or other obstructions henenth the'befiring roller.
5. A caster comprising a spindle, a roller connected therewith having u ('enlrnll)- lo l cated peripheral groove, i1 smaller roller connect/ed with smid spindle, :intl :1y link ehnin comprising square links of the saine width as thegroore, running;- over the rollers and registering within the groove to dra-w rugs 2e
