Letters Patent N 106,675, dated August 23, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPINNIN'Ct-MACHIU'E.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sanne.
lo all whom 'it may concern:
Re it known that I, WILLIAM Durrxi;1=, fletc1s burg, inthe State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spiuniiig-Machines; and I do hereby deelare'that the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawing'and letters of reference marked thereon makinga part of this specification, in which the figure is a side elevation.
,'lbis invention consists in the combination and arrangement of drawing-rolls, a twister, a Hier, a spool, a main driving-wheel, a shaft, a pitman, and a sliding head provided with an arm, all as hereinafter more fully described.
'Io enable those skilled in the art to make. and use my invention, I no w proceed to describefitsconstruetion and operation.
Similar letters, in the drawing, referto like-parts.
In the drawinga is an oblong Ieast-metal plate.
b, a bentarln projecting downwardirointhc plate a.
c, a vertical screw passing through the arn'r for thc purpose'ot' clamping the machine to. a table.
d, a cog gear mounted above the plate in standards e, extending upward from its upper side.
h, a crank for rotating the gear (l.
i, a shaft parallel to the plate a, and placed above it, in standards k la, and connected by a pinion with the coggear d.
Each standard vl; sustains a pair of spur-wheels, l Z, which receive motion from band-wheels m4n' on the same shaft;A with the lower spur-wheels I, said wheels heilig joined by a belt with a wheel, n, ou the shaft et' the main cog-gear d.v
A twister, o, is arranged between the two Sets of spur-wheels, and is rotated by a belt passing around a wheel, fr, on the shal'ti. The machine tirstreeeives rolls between the set ot spur-wheels nearest the end oi the plate a, from which the rolls pass through thc twister o, and thence between the next set ot' spurw heels Z.
The hand-wheel m' of this set being smaller than thelmud-wheel m ot the other set, and being rotated by the saine belt, revolvesv fast-er, together with its spur-wheels, and consequently, the roll is drawn out into yarn while passing between the second 'pair ot' wheels I. Illenee the yarn passes through a tube, s, and Hier, a, to a spool, t, around which the. ther revolves, and ou which it lays the yarn,
, 'lhe flier u projects from avertical shaft, c, sustained in boxes, one at the end of' the plate maud the other in an arm, u, ofthe standard at, which extends do\vn-' ward frolnthe plate. l The shaft e is revolved by a band passing around the wheels c' and a on the head of the vertical shaft b', suitably supported on the. opposite side of the standard .11,- aud having a, bevel-gear, c', ou its upper end, which meshes with the main cog-gear d. v The spool t is operated by'au arm, ll', projecting horizontally from a head, c. which slides ou the standard x, being joined by a pitmau, hv', wit-h a crank-pin on the main cog-gear. Thus the' spool is made to travel up and down while receiving the yarn, in order that the latter may be'laid ou it evenly.
Instead of the second 'pair 'ot' sl'nlr-wheels, l, I may choose to employ two rollers, one ot' which has a grooved rim andthe other a rubber bead around its vperipher iitting the groove in the rim ot' the first,
but leaving a sufficient opening for the yarn to pass through.
\Vl1at I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters latent, is-
'Ihe combination oi' the drawingrolls l l, twister o, flier n, and spool t, with the main 'lriving-wheel (l, shaft t', piti'uau h', and slidingl head c', provided with the arm d', when all these parts are constructed, arranged. and operated substantially as described.
WILLIAM DUFFNER.
