WASEINGMACHINE CYLINDEB Spec1fleation of Lettrs latentl Application filed December 9, 1911. Serial No. 864,784.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY BDD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vashing-Machine Cylinders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being, had to the accompanying draw1ngs, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this specification.
My invention relates to washing machine cylinders and more particularly to an automatically reversible trap for use with reversible cylinders, the object of my invention being to provide a tra of this character having pivotal mountmg on the cylinder and provided with opposed hoods adapted for opening the cylinder mouth in the direction in which the cylinder is turning. In accomplishing this object, I have provided the improved details of structure nereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure I is a erspective view of a wash ing machine cylinder provided with traps constructed according to my invention. Fig. lil is un enlarged detail view of a part of the cylinder and one of the traps. Fig. lll is an end view of same.
Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates a cylinder adapted for use with any ordinary washing machine and provided with end gudgeons 2, by which the cylinder muy be revolubly mounted in the machine. At intervals around the periphery of the cylinder are months 3. xtending across the center line of each mouth, and lying over the ends of the cylinder, is a rod 4, which is held in place by staples 5. Mounted on the rod 4 is a hub 6 having side meat 3, the platea being extended laterally at an'angle to each other, so that when one o the plates lies flat against the cylinder lates 7 of suflicient Width to cover the and closes the part of the mouth at that side of the central bearing, the opposite plate will be spaced from the cylinder to uncover the part of the mouth at that side.
Fixed to each of the blades 7 are the end wings 8 which extend into the mouth 3 and preferably bear against the material at the ends of the mouth, so that the ends are covered while the face of the trap is open to admit water to the interior of the cylinder through the mouth 3.
In using a cylinder provided with my improvement, presuming the cylinder to be re volving in the direction of the arrow, Fig. II, and the trap being open as illustrated in the several figures, when the cylinder turns so that the months enter the water in the bottom of the machine, the open plate 7 Wili direct the water through the cylinder mouth 3 into the interior, the open plate 7 guiding the Water so that it is forced inwardly at en angie and strikes the 'clothes contained within the cylinder with some foros. When the cylinder is reversed the back of the open blade 7 comes in contact with the water and is forced to closed position, the opposite plate being open so that water is taken in through that side of the trap.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is The combination with a cylinder having longitudinally extending mouths in its periphery, of a cl0sure for each mouth having a central hinge member extending over the open mouth, and outwardly inclined blades extcnding from opposite sides of the hinge member and each adaptcd to close its mouth section when its opposite blade is elevated, and wings on the under faces of the blades adapted to travel in said months and close the ends of the blades to form hoods thereof, substantially as set f0rth.
n testimony whereof l afiix my signature in presence of two witnesscs.
