MEANS FOR APPLYING STAMPS 0R LABELS.
To all whom 2'15 may concern Be it known that we, ALFRED TI-IUN and HERMANN THUN, subyects of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Gevelsberg' and Ludwigshafen, respectively, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Applying Stamps or Labels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The present invention relates to means for applying stamps or labels, and is an improvement on the device shown in our application Serial No. 566,218, filed June 10th, 1910, inasmuch as it is a modification of the latter embodying improvements in the construction and in its operation.
The principal object of the invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character.
A second object of the invention is to provide an improved means for gripping the strip.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification:Figure 1 shows the conveying device in its first position (before starting) showing the gripping device open. Fig. 2 shows the gripping device in closed position, after the strip has been bent and pushed backward.
By turning the crank shaft 31 the cama will push the lever Z) against a tension spring (not shown), which lever is fastened to shaft 38 whereby link 0 will pull the rod (Z upward in the groove 6 with the bolt f and the tongue arms 71 and g. The gripper will press on the end of the strip which is led through the guide formed by plates 15 and 18 so that the strip which is farther up is checked by stops 1'? will curve slightly as the gripping tongs go upward. During this upward movement the pins k will press Specification of Letters Patent.

on the sides of the arms of the tongs and cause the same to close thereby gripping the strip. The tongs will remain closed during the gradual downward movement of the strip, because its arms 9 it will ,have interlocked each other by means of spring hooks m, n. When the strip has reached the position in which it is to be torn off, the pin 3 will press on the finger m on the hook m, when both hooks m, n will disengage and the tongs will spring open, so that further upward movement of the tongs will not alfect the strip, the latter remaining in position for engagement by the plunger 23. After this the plunger 23 engages the strip back of its perforations, the stamp 20 will press against the stamp 21, while it swings upon the shaft 25*, then the stamp 21 with the aid of pushrod 11 will be pushed onward, will press the stamp 21 and will tear the strip off before the same can move on.
0 is a recess for the tongs in the drum 11, and the guide 15 is bent so that they will permit the strip to bend.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim is:
In a device of the kind described, a guide, a pair of tongs having a projecting portion slidable on said guide, means to reciprocate ALFRED THUN. [1,. s.] HERMANN THUN. [Ins-1 Witnesses:
