Application.filetLApril.17, 1912. Serial No. 691,338.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS PELOQUIN,.& citizen of the United States, residing at Southbridge, in the county of l/Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented a new and useful BilliardiOhalkefiolder, of which the following is a specification.
The principal objects of this invention are to provide a billiard chalk holder ofsimple and inexpensive construction so thatitcan Figure l is an end elevation of a chalk holder constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a front view; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. l is a central longitudinal sectional view of the drum and connected parts; and Fig. 5 is an elevation of the drum removed from the holder.
The invention is shown in a practical form in which two brackets 10 are applied to the ceiling or other surface on which the holder is to be mounted. With these brackets are connected the ends 11 of a sheet metal frame 12 which constitutes a stationary support for the device. This frame prefer ably consists of a single piece of sheet metal but can be constructed otherwise if desired. It is of a general cylindrical form, but the surface thereof is discontinued at the top to permit access to the interior parts. It is also provided with inwardly turned flanges 13 at the sides of this cut out portion for a purpose which will appear hereinafter, and it is provided with a vertical downwardly opening, mouth or outlet 14 at the bottom tangent to the circumference of the surface.
Fixedly supported by the sides of this frame is a shaft 16 held in posit-ion by screws 17 and provided with an enlarged bushing 18 at the center. Mounted to rotate on this shaft is a drum 20 having open ends, in which are received a pair of coiled springs 21, one end of each spring being connected with the drum and the other with the shaft, whereby, the springs being under tension when the drum is in a certain posi- Patented Julyl, 1913.

These with the surfaces of the sides 11 assist in holding the springsproperly imposition .if they have any tendency to get out of place. The flanges 13 project over the edges of the drum as is shown so as to constitute guards therefor.
The drum is provided wit-h a key-slotshaped perforation 24 for receiving a knot, projection, or button 25 on the end of a flexible member 26 which may be string, wire, tape, or the like. The projection on the end of this is pushed into the circular part of the slot 24 and then moved longitudinally as indicated, and the flexible member is adapted to be wound up on the drum by the recoil of the springs and to pass down through the passage 14. The end of this flexible connection is connected with the device for holding the chalk. This chalk holder is made preferably as follows :It consists of two pieces of sheet metal 30 and 31 hinged together by an integral hinge 32 at one corner. Each member consists of three perforated square sides arranged as the three sides of a square in such a way that when the two parts swing together as shown in the drawings the three sides of one part will fill the spaces between the edges of the sides of the other member and form a complete cube or other solid figure. The free end of the member 31 is provided with a perforation 34C for receiving the end of the flexible member 26, and in order to lead this flexible member to this connection and to connect the parts together thereby the member 30 is provided with a perforation 35 through which the flexible member passes.
It will be seen, therefore, that this chalk holder consists simply of a pair of integral sheet metal members hinged together and very simply and economically manufactured, and that the two parts are held together by the action of the springs in the drum. In this way the chalk holder is always kept closed by a spring action both when in use and when not in use, and yet it can be opened very readily for the insertion of a new piece of chalk or for any other purpose.
Although I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention and explained the details of manufacture, I am aware that many modifications can be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claim. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and described, but
What I do claim is As an article of manufacture, a device of the character described, comprising a sheet metal frame of substantially cylindrical form having means extending upwardly therefrom for fixing it to a ceiling and a cut out portion at the top extending down- Wardlyat one side, a shaft centrally fixed in said frame, a drum rotatably mounted on said shaft, and resilient means for connecting the drum with the shaft, said frame having inturned flanges at its ends over lapping the ends of the drum and coming substantially into contact with the drum near the ends.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand,'in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS PELOQUIN.
