Description

H. G'. OSBORNE.
EXPANSION SHIELD. APPLICATION' FILED JAN. 2e, 1910.
v 'HMHIlllllnmmlmm -iiiiirn` STATES PATENT oFFCE;
HENRY G. .OSSBOBNIL OYF BROOKLYN, 'NEW YORK.
l 'Exransrciv-SHIELD.
To all lwlw/n, may concern.:
Be it known that I,l HENRY G. OsoRNina citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn` in the county of Kings and Statev of New York, vhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expansion-Shields, of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention consists of an expansion shield for anchoring screws or bolts 1n holes `drilled into brick or stone.
The objects are, to provide a. one-piece shield which 'may be expanded throughout its length', and to provideashield of this def `scription which may be secured in lplace sutiiciently firm before the insertionofthe screw to prevent its `falling out or turning- While the screw is being tightened,
y invention is fully disclosed in the V'ace companying drawing, in which:
.Figure 1 is a, plan'view of `niy'shield in its initial unfolded form; Fig.l 2is a sideview of the same; Fig. 3 is an'enlarged side I view,v of the shield in itsfo'lded forin ready for use; Fig. 4 is a. sectional viewshowing the shield in a slabjand holding-a` .screw lfrom which an arm or other part`may be suspended.; Figa-5i is a side elevation of `the shield ready to be inserted -in a hole in* a slab, and Fig. 6 shows t-he saine shield after it-has'been pushed linto a hole in a slab-and against the base wall or end `of the same to flatten -the integral links connecting the inner ends of the sides of" the shield and spread said ends to bind against the side walls of said hole.
The Shield -1 is composed of 'two semicylindricalsectionsQ, 2 joined at' their rear or inner ends by the` flexible links 3, 3 which are preferably formed with the .Wedges 4,74
to enter the' space between theaces of the inner ends of the sections 2 and cause them to separate. The flat faces of .the semiv'cylindrical sections 2, 2 'are recessed at 5, 5 said-recesses being tapered and also being spil-ally recessed to correspond to sections of screw-threads.
In use the shield 1l after being folded to bring the recessed sides of the sections?, in facing relatilh isllnserted in a hole of proper diameter-and forced in until the links 3 contact with the bottom of the-hole and force the wedgest between the sedlions 2, 2 to spread theinner ends of said sections apart and forc'e them against the sides of the hole.

' insertion and tightening of the screw 7, in the chamber produced by lrecesses 5, o,
causes a further separationof thesections .1'
2, 2, producing ample A expansion of the shield to firmly secure the screw. 'The screw fl' may be utilized to hold anaiin 8 or Owing to the tap'erfin recesses 5, 5 the expansion is greatest at the Iin'ner end which is desirable.
4Holes drilled to receive expansion shields are frequently made too large. My invention permits of using a screw of any sizev necessary to expand the shield tightly 'in rlhis is a very valuable feature in a one-piece shield and is madepossible by th'parallel `expansion attainable with my invention.
In Fig. 4a slab is indicated having a hole, 10 receiving my shield, whichwill pret`- erably bein one integral piece` of lead. i
The invention is notV in every instance What I claim as my invention and desire lto secure by Letters Patent., is:
AIV1. The combination shield-of the class described of' two semiin' an expansion cylindricall sections taperingly recessed, said l,
'recesses being screw threaded, and the said sections being joined together at their Ainn'er ends by two flexible links having wedges formed on them adapted to sepa-rate the sec-A tionswhen the shield is forced against the bottom of the hole receiving said shield, the
two sections being adapted to be flirt-hei' and` positively separated' by 'the insertion of the.
screw in the recesses.
2. The combination in an 'expansion shield ofthe class described of two sections Y taperingly recessed, said sections vbeing joined together at their inner ends by two tleniblel links having wedges formed on `them adapted` to separate the sections when the-shiel is forced against the bottom of the holereceiving said shield, the two sections being adapted to be further and positive1y separated by the insertion of the screw 1n the recesses. 3. The combination in an expansion shield of the class described of two sections ta eringly recessed, said sections joined by a exible connection and means for expandin tho inner ends of said sections .in the' ho e p11-ier to the insertion ofthe screw.
4. e combination in ',an e. ansionr shield of the class described ofla p uijalityil of sections taperingly recessed, .means-for ics .shield for the purpose expandingr said sections in the hole prior to the insertion of the screw, the said sections adapted to be further expanded by the insertion of a screw in the recesses.
5. The combination in an expansion specified of a plurality of expansihle members adapted to be expanded by a screw and means for expanding the inner end of said shield independent of said screw.
(i. The combination willi an expansion shield adapted to be expanded by a screw of means to expund said shield at the inner end lndependenr of said screw.
7. The combination, in an expansion shield for the purpose specified1 of a plurality of sections forming a longitudinal recess, means for expanding the inner ends of HENRY G. osBoRNE.
