Application filed September 24, 1912. Serial No. 7,212,117. v
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, NrcoLL C. Onno, a
citizen of the United States, and a. resident of Middletown, in the county of Orange-and State .of New York, have invented certain new and, .useful Improvements in Automobile-Horns,of whiehthe followingis a speciiicaticn. l. i
Myinvention is an improvement `in automobile horns, and has .for its object the ,PrO- vision vot mechanism for initiating a series of lrapidly succeeding air vibrations, together .with .mechanism ,for controlling and 'modulating vthe ivibrations to produce sound Waves resembling the human voice as it is modulated by Vthe lips; y
V-In .the drawings :#Figure l is a Sect-i911 on 'the line 1 1 of Fig. 2, Fig. 2 is ,a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. '1, Fig. 13 is a detail. .perspective view of the valve actuating mechanism, and Fig. 4 isa transverse section of the `inte-nsiier showingsI modified ,form of valve.
1 I In qthe present embodiment of the ,1nven' tion, atwo partcasing is provided, consisting of thesections 1 and 2each of the said sections being lapproximately'cup shaped and ittingatfitsedges against theother section. Each section 1 tand 2 is provided Awith a lateral iange 3 and 4 respectively, and a disk 5 having ac entral laterallyextendingnipple 6' is secured `to .the dtges by Ill-Cans of screws ,7. I
The disk 5 is provided withva lateral mar ginal flange 8 .extending inthe opposite di rectio'niothe lnipple 6, and the saidilange 'itsoutsideoftheanges and 4 ofthe casing sections. A' diaphragm 9 is arrpn ed between .the disk A5A ,and @the .flangs'i an., fl, the said .diaphragm extending lfiero-SS. the
' opening vatftiiat endof =t-'bet ;afsfing adje# cent to the d1sk,5,and ,the s aid diaphragm 9'is held inplace by the screws 7 before mentioned. Gaskets .1.0fand 11 are arranged o n opposite sides of ,the d .inph-ragni Ibetween' the 'anges 3 and .4 'and the disk and a .lug or projection 12 is secu'redito thecenter of the diaphragm, the said lpgfbeing rounded from side t0 side as vshown moreparticularly inFig.1.`-"y 1 A supportingr frame .consisting of 'a base 13 andlaterally extending;` arms 14 isadjustably securedtogthe casing section 2, by means of screws- 1 5,'which ,are passed through enlarged openings 1,6 inthe casing'ction, and are .threaded into l,the base `13to Aadjnstably ever the position of the` supporting.frame 13.
A disk or Wheel- 18 is secured to a stub shaft` 19, Whose ends are journaled .in the base 13 of the supporting frame and in a plate 20 secured to the arms 14 and held in spaced relation by the said arms. The wheel v18 is provided with a plurality of arcshaped cuts or notches 21, and the junction `of the said cuts or notches forniteeth .22,
the .said teeth being adapted to engage the vlng 1 2, before mentioned, to produce` a snccession of vibrations of thediaphragm when the wheel is turned.
A pinion 32 is secured to the stubshaft 19, and the said pinion is in meslrwith fa gear Wheel 21 on an operating shaft 25, which is journaled in a bushing 26, extending laterally from the base 13 of the-supporting frame through an opening 27 in the section 2. The Aopening 27 is of greater diameter than `the bushing', so that the bushing will not interfere with the adjustment of the supporting frame, before mentioned.
A crank 28 is secured to theshnt 25 at the 'outer end of the bnshing and it will be evi dent that when the crank is turned, the wheel 1S will be rotated rapidly to produce a series of rapid contacts between the teeth 22 and the lug 12, whereby to vibrate the diaphragm 9.
An intensifier in the'shape of a horn 29 of tapering form, and vof suitable material as for instance metal, has its inner end engaged with the nipple tithe said inner end being slip-pcd outside of Ithe nipple to hold the horn in place.
