GEORGE E. HELLMICH, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
TYMPAN-GAGE.
Application filed February 24, 1912.
To allrwhom t may camera:
i Be it known that l, GEORGE E. l'leLLMIoi-i, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Vvvashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tympan-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
My inveution pertains to an improved device of the above type embodying certain novel provisions whereby it can be inounted on a tympan sheet for adjustment in relatively angnlar directions and securely fastened in set position.
The invention resides in the novel features and combinations of parts as set forth in the following description and succinctly defined in my annexed claiins.
lith reference to the accoinpanying drawing wherein like reference characters adesimate corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, with por-tions broken away, applied to a tympan sheet. Figi. 2 is a plan thereof with portions broken away. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and liig. et is a perspective thereof.
I provide the-gage proper, as 1, with comparatively long and short base parts 3, 2,
0 the foriner coinprising a forwardly projecting extension of a plate 3, secured by inturnecl fingers 3 to the upturned portion 9/ of base part 3. Base parts 2 and 8 extend in opposite directions for projection beneath the tyinpan Sheet, as A, of platen B, through respective parallel slots or incisions provided therein in suitable spaced relation, whereby the device can be adjnsted endwise or laterally on the underlying portion of the sheet, as may be desired in setting the gage. i
Projecting through suitable apertures in plate 3' and upturned portion 9' of gage 1, is a work guard 4: provided with a head -l' fitting snugly but slida'bly on a guide 5 which is connected adjacent to gage 1 with base part 3 and spaced outwardly therefrom for clearance ofrsaid head with respect to the tympan sheet.
Provision is made for positively engaging the tympan sheet to secure the gage inV set position, the said provision conveniently comprising a jaw 6 overlying base part 5;, and hinged to the freeend of a resilient support or spring 7 forming a rearward eX- tension of upturned portion 2', and being Specifioaton of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 679,658.
adapted to be forced to bend outwardly (luring closing movement of jaw 6 by angular jaw extensions or heel parts 8 which ride on the tympan sheet over base part 3 and are flnally brought to a. forwardly inclined position (see Fig. l) to engage Sheet A in proxiinity to the rear outer slit Z). ln this connection, it will be observed that jaw 6 is provided with barbs 6' which in the final closing movement of the jaw pierce the tympan sheet and enter suitable aperturcs or seats 6, provided in base part 3 for reception of the points of the barbs. The jaw 0, when open, is free from any resilient means tending to close the same owing to the position assumed by the heels or eXtensions 8.
Having thus described my invention what I ola-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is i 1. A tympan gage comprising a body having coniparatively long and short base parts projecting in relatively opposite directions for insertion in respective slots of the tympan sheet, a guard extending in angular relation to said body, a jaw for engaging the tympan sheet, and means for pivotally connecting the aw to the body, whereby the jaw when open is free from any resilient means tending to close the same.
2. A gage comprising a base part having a resilient portion bent baclnvardly upon said base part and spaced therefrom, a jaw pivoted to the resilient portion of said base part for movement toward the latter, and means to lock said jaw from movement, said means being adapted to move beneath the resilient portion of said base part upon the looking of said jaw.
3. A tympan gage comprising a body provided With a base part adapted for insertion in a slot of the tympan sheet, a guard extending in angular relation to said gage body, a resilient part connected with said gage body, a jaw hinged to said last part, means movable with said jaw for exerting pressure' against said base part to spring said resilient part, said means moving in an angle of departure from said base part during final closing movement of said jaw.
4. A tympan gage comprising a body consisting of a base part, a guard extending from said base part, a resilient part connected with said base part, a jaw hinged to said last part for movement toward said base part, and provided with barbs projeeting from its face, and means inovable with said jaw for exerting pressure against said base part to spring said resilien't part, said Ineans lmoving in an angle of departure from said base part during final closing movement of said jaw.
5. A gage provided with comparatively long and short base parts projeoting in opposite directions, a resilient part, a jaw hinged to said resilient part for movement toward said long base part, means movable with said jaw for exerting pressure against said last base part to spring said resilient part, said means moving in an angle of departure from said last base part during final olosing movement of said jaw, a guide overlying said long base par-t, and a guard slid- 'by the jaw and adapted to ride on the tympan Sheet directly over the base part for loekin' said aw 'in an 4ol erative Josition.
Signed at Seattle, l/Vashington this 15th day of February 1912.
