Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT J. MANN, OF DALLAS OITY,.ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SIEVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 106,597, dated August 23, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LROBERT J. MANN, of Dallas City, in the county of Hancock and State ofl Illinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Sieves, ot' which the following' is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in clasping uthe edge of the sievecloth or bottom ot' the sieve, and fastening it Within the metallic hoop by swnging, as hereafter more fully de scribed, so that the ends of all the wires ofthe sieve-cloth are firmly clasped and stretched, to give tension and ri gidness to the sievecloth.
Figure l represents a vertical sectional View of my improved sieve, and Fig. 2 a top or pla-n view ofthe same.
A is the rim or hoop of the sieve, made of sheet metal, the top edge being turned over a wire-to stiffer it and keep it in shape. The lower edge of the rim is turned over, as shown at B. C is the sieve-cloth ordinarily used in sieves. Itsedge is placed between the edge turned over at B and the hoop A, and thon they are swaged ont, as shown, clasping the edge of the sieve-cloth securely, and stretching the entire sieve cloth, so that it'is held in a rigid, hrm condition for use. The end ot' every Wire is firmly clasped, so that the breeking of a partof them does not a'ect or loosen the other wires.
' lt will be readily seen that a seperate band may be put in et B, instead of turning over the lower edge of the hoop A. It would be held by the swaging. So far es tightening the sieve-cloth is concerned by swaging the festening, it could be accomplished by making a-
