JOHN F. JOHNSON, ELMHURST, NEW YORK.
MOLDING 0R TRIMMING- FOR BUILDINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 18, 1913.
Patented June 24, 1911 3.
Serial No. 749,083.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Elmhurst, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements-in Moldings or Trimmings for Buildings, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to moldings or trimmings for finishing the interior of buildings and particularly to moldings or trimmings composed of sheet metal, and the invention consists of improved means for connecting two r more parts to form a complete molding or trimming and which may also be used in securing the said molding or trimming to a wall or other support.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view showing a sheet metal molding consisting of two parts connected according to my invention, the connection also serving as means for securing the molding to a wall;Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing a molding consisting of three parts and my improved means for connecting said parts ;Fig. 3 a view similar to Figs. 1 and 2, but showing another modification, and Fig. 4 a side and end view of the means which I employ in connecting two parts to form a complete molding or finishing strip.
In Fig. l of the accompanying drawing I have shown at athe wall of a building and at b a molding comprising two parts b placed together, and the adjacent side-edges of which are provided with inwardly directed flange strips 6 and in connecting the parts b of the molding b I provide a plate 0 preferably approximately rectangular in form and which may be approximately square, or oblong in form, and in one edge portion of which is formed a slot 0 having diverging branches 0 forming a central wedge c". In the use of this connecting device c, in the form of construction shown in Fig. 1 where two parts are connected to form a molding, said connecting device 1s driven onto the flange strips Z), or said flange strips are driven into the slot 0 and one of said flange strips enters one of the diverging branch slots 0 and the other of said flange strips enters the other of said diverging branch slots, and said flange strips and the separate parts of the molding are securely locked together. The securing or locking device 0 may be countersunk in the Wall a, if desired, or the complete molding may be secured to the wall by nails or other devices passed through the outer edge portions thereof in the usual manner, or both of said means may be employed for securing the molding to a wall or other support.
In Fig. 2 I have shown the plate 0 provided with the main slot 0- and with the branch slots and a supplemental slot 0 formlng two wedge members 0, and the moldlng (l conslsts of four parts d 6Z3, cl
and (Z and the part (Z is secured to the part (Z or a member thereof and said parts are provided with two flange strips (Z and a central flange strip (Z and said flange strips are driven into the plate 0, or said plate is driven onto said flange strips and the wedge members 0 pass between the flange strips 03 and d", as shown in said figure, and the parts of the molding are securely locked together.
In Fig. 3 I have also shown another modification in which two of the looking or securing plates 0 are employed and one of these plates has two of the slots 0 as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and the other has three of said slots the same as in Fig. 2, and two wedge members 0, and the molding 6 con sists of two main parts 6 and 6 connected 111 L form and having flange strips c",
and the part is composed of two separate parts having flange strips 0 and secured to the outer face of the part c" is a supplemental molding strip f composed of two parts one of which is provided with a flange strip f and the method of connecting the securing or looking plates (2 with the molding 6- is clearly shown in Fig. 3 and is the same as with the construction shown in Fig. 2.
The securing or looking plate or plates 0 may be of any preferred dimensions and any desired form, and they may also aid in securing the moldings or finishing strips to a wall, as shown in Fig. 1, or the molding or finishing strips may be secured to the wall in any desired manner.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis l. A molding or finishing strip composed of separate parts and the adjacent edges of which are provided with inwardly directed flange strips, and a locking plate having a slot adapted to receive said flange strips and provided with diverging slots forming an intervening Wedge.
2. A molding or finishing strip composed of separate parts provided with parallel flange strips, and a locking plate provided with a slot adapted to receive said flange strips, said slot being provided with diverging slots separated by a Wedge member.
3. A molding consisting of separate parts having parallel flange strips and a locking plate provided with diverging slots adapted to receive said flange strips, and intervening wedge members adapted to separate said flange strips When the locking plate is driven thereonto.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 15th day of February 1913.
JOHN F. JOHNSON. WVitnesses:
C. MULREANY, S. ANDREWS.
