To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, EDWARD J. KEARNEY and THEODORE Tnscnnn, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of Vvauwatosa and lVest Allis, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented pertain new and useful Improvements in Means for LubricatingMachine- Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompany-n ment and combination of parts as herein-" after particularly described and defined in the claims. I

Figure 1- is a vertical section of a vertical spindle milling machine embodying the invention; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the spindle and its upper bearing on the line 2 2, Fig. 1.-
The machine comprises a box frame or hollow case a, similar to those of machine tools of this class. It is formed or pro-. vided at the upper end with a forwardl projecting hollow arm or extension d: which overhangs the work table indicated by dotted lines at c in Fig. l, with which machines of this kind are usually provided, The arm b-is provided at or adjacent to its front-end with vertically alined bearings d and e for the vertical tool spindle f. The bearings 62 and a in the present case are made in the form of flanged cylindrical bushings which are fitted into alined vertical openings in the arm 6, and have taper bores. Thearm b is also formed or provided with-a horizontal bearing 9 for a shaft 12, whose axis is in the same vertical plane with the axis of the spindle f. The
bearing 9 in the present case consists of a cylindrical sleeve fitted and secured in a corresponding opening in said arm. It is shown as provided ad acent to its endswith bushings i ofLBabbitt or other suitable f metal, between which there is an annular oil chamber or cavity j surrounding g the arm b-is formed with an oil feed or supply: passage 7: leading into'an oblique passage 1, which registers at its upper'end with a lateral opening through the up er spindle bearing d, and at its lower end with an opening through the sleeve 9' into the oil chamber j. The spindle f is connected with the shaft 72. by bevel gears m and n inclosed in the arm I) and accessible through an opening in the front end pf the arm, which is" provided 'with a removable .closure 0.
From the upper end of the passage Z above the lower part of the opening through and into the bearin .d, an overflow passage p leads laterally and then downwardly into the shaft h. Above and parallel with the sleeve the space or chamber around the gear m,vas. shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The bore of the upper bearing 03 is formed with one or more longitudinal oil grooves or channels q, and
the bore of the lower bearlng e is formed with one or more like or similar grooves or channels r. Adjacent toits lower enlarged end'inside of the hollow arm I), the spindle f is formed orprovided with. an outwardly projecting rim or collar 8, having a depend-- ing marginal lip on the underside, which overhangs an upwardly rim or flange t on a redhclng ring or annular closure u, removably fitted and secured'in .the opening in the under side of the arm 2').- The spindle f is provided at'its' upper end with a longitudinally adjustable taper sleeve 4), 'fitting into the bearing d and secured on the spindle by an adjusting nut to for taking up play and wear-between said spindle and its taperbearings. The frame or case a is formed or provided in the lower part thereof with an oil well or reservoir m. A'pump y having" a suction pipe a dip ing into saidwell or reservoir, is connected by an upwardly extending discharge pipe 2 with the passage k. The
shaft 72. is'connected b any suitably constructed and arranged train of gearing with a driving shaft 3, provided with a pulley at and gear 5. In the present case the rojecting annular shaft it is shown as connected with the driving gear 5 through any one of anumber of change speed gears 6, which are 'shiftable lengthwise on, a shaft 7 into engagement with corresponding gears 8 on a parallel shaft 9, which is connected by gears 10 and 11 with the shaft h, the shaft 7 being connected with the gear 5 by gears 12 and 13.
The power transmitting and speed changing gears with their bearings'are supplied with oil when the machine is in operation, as shown and described in our former patent hereinbefore mentioned, by the perforated branch 14 of the oil supply or feed pipe 2, extending across the interior of the rame or case a above said gears and bearings, and in the present case connecting the pipe 2 with the'passage is through which oil is delivered to the upper bearing of the vertical spindle f and the bearing of the connectingshaft h. 'A pump of any suit able kind may be used to elevate the oil from the reservoir a: and deliver it to the gears and hearings to be lubricated. In the present'case a rotary pump is shown which is connected with and driven by the main ear 5 of the milling machine. The bushings i are formed on the under side of their bores with longitudinal grooves or passages 15, opening at their outer ends into the case a and arm 6 respectively, and an open ing IG indicated by dotted lines in Fig.1, is provided in the wall or partition between the case a and arm I) for the return flow of oil from said arm into said case and thence into the reservoir a2.
During the operation of the machine, oil is drawn by the pump y from the reservoir w and forced upwardly through the pipe 2, lts perforated branch 14 and the passages 70 and Z, to the upper bearing d of the spindle j, and into the .annular chamber j in the bearing sleeve g surrounding the shaft it, surplus oil overflowing from the upper end of the passage 5 through the passage p and falling on the gear m. From the upper end of the passage Z, oil flows through the opening in the bearing a? into and through the grooves or passages 9, thereby thor oughly lubricating said hearing. The sur plus oil discharged from the lower ends 9f the grooves or passages g,-'with the oil discharged from the passage p,overflows the gears m and n, copiously lubricating them,
and some of this oil entering the groove 2 or passage r in the lower bearing 6, thoroughly. iubricates 'said bearing, any surplus Oll escap1ng from the lower end of said groove or passage upon the rim 8, being thrown centrifugal action'away from the joint between. the spindle and the ringor closure in and thus prevented from escaping through said' joint. From the annular chamhcr 7" oil flows through the grooves or passage 3.5 in the lower sides of the ings into the reservoir.

-Various modifications in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may 7 be made in the adaptation of the lubricating means herein shown and described to machines of difi'erent kinds under varying conditions, without departing from the principle andscope of the invent-ion. I
By the term vertically alined or vertically disposed as herein employed in connection with the spindle bearings 03 and c, and by the term vertical as herein employed in connection with the spindle f, it is intended to include any inclination thereof at which'oil will flow from the upper to the lower bearing.

In a machine tool the combination of a case or frame having a hollow overhanging arm provided with vertically disposed spindle bearings and an oil passage leading upwardly to the upper bearing, an oilreservoir'located in said case or frame below said arm and a pump adapted to elevate oil from said reservoir and to deliver the same through said passage to the upper bearmg,

In a machine tool the combination of a case or frame having a hollow overhanging arm provided with vertically disposed spindle bearings, an oil supply passage leading upwardly to the upper bearing and an overflow passage leading from the upper part of said supply passage, an oil reservoir located int-said case or frame below said arm and a pump adapted to elevate oil from said reservoir and to deliver the same through said supply passage to the upper bearing, the hollow arm and case or frame forming a return conduit for the oil from said bearings and overflow passage into said reservoir. 3. In a machine tool the combination of a case or hollow frame having a hollow overhanging arm provided with vertically ed to elevate oil. from said reserroir and' to deliver the same through said supply passage to the upper bearing, the hollow arm and case or frame forming areturn conduit for the oil from said bearings into said reservoir.
4. In -a machine tool the combination of a case or frame having a hollow overhanging arm provided with vertically disposed spindle bearings and an oil passage leading to the upper bearing, an oil'reservoir' arranged in saidcase or frame below said armto receive surplus oil flowing by gravity from said bearings into said arm and a pump adapted to elevate oil from said reservoir to the upper bearing through said passage, the hollow arm and case ,or frame forming a return conduit for the oil from said bearings into said reservoir.
5. In a machine tool the combination of a case or frame having a hollow overhanging arm provided with vertically disposed spindle bearings, a horizontally disposed bearing and an oil passage leading to the upper spindle bearing and to the horizontal bearing, a reservoir arranged in the case or frame below said arm to receive surplus oil flowing by gravity from said bearings into said arm and a pump adapted to elevate oil from said reservoir and to deliver the same to the upper spindle bearing and to the horizontal bearing through said passage, said hollow arm and case or frame forming a return conduit for the oil from said bearings into said reservoir.
6. In a machine tool the combination of a case or frame having a hollow overhanging arm provided with vertically disposed spindle bearings and an oil supply passage leading to the upper bearing, said bearings being formed with internal longitudinal oil channels opening at their lower ends into said arm, arotary spindle mounted in said bearings and provided adjacentto its lower end which projects through an opening in said arm, with an outwardly pro ecting oil deflecting rim or collar overhanging an upwardly projecting rim with which said arm is provided around said opening, an oil res-' ervoir arranged in said case or frame below sald arm to recelve surplus o1l flowmg by gravity back through said arm from sa1d bearings, and a pump adapted to elevate oil
