Specification of Letters ratent. Patented June 24, i913.
Application filed SeptembenZS, 1911. Serial No. 651,803.
a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain newand useful Improvement in Transom Draft-Gears of which the follownw is a full, clear, and exact. description, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use-the same, reference being had to the acccn'ipanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in
Figure 1 is a plan View, partly in the horizontal section of my improved transom draft gear.
tional view through the gear. Figa-t is a cross sectional view on line lle-4e Fig. 2.; Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the line 5-5 Fig. 1. Fig. G is a combined-view showing front and side elevations of the follower plate.
This invention relates to a new and useful imIn-ovement l in transom draft gears. designed particularly for use in Connection with' friction draft springs, such, for instance, as the well known Westinghouse type.
In the drawings: 1 indicates the bolster, which is preferably of cast metal. havinga top flange 2 auf. a l' o-ttom flange 3, the latter having integral or removable center and side bearings as desired. The top flange 2 is provided at' points in alinenient with the renter. side and intermediate sills, with vertical project'ing lugs 4. These lugs` are designed to -enter recesses in the under facesl of said sills. to interlock the holster' therewith. A
The vertical web of the bolster is provided at its center with a rearwardly extending hollowl boss 5, in which is mounted a springcylinder (l of the friction draft gez On each side of this hollow boss -are tlanged openings T for the passage of a transom yoke v The spring cylinder 6 has lugs 6 arranged on each side thereof to bear against the front lace of the'bolster web. The rear end of the spring cylinder is rounded as at t3, to engage the convex face Fig. .2 is a front elevational l view of the bolster. Fig. 3 is a vertical secof the yoke and bear there-against, while the front ends of the drafts rings bear against a follower plate 9,' saidfollower plate being arranged behind stop shoulders 10 extending from the forward edges of the top and bottoni flanges of the bolster.l In the front faceof this follower plate is a recess,`whose bottoni wall is convex, as shownv at 9'l Fig. 6, and against thishconvex face a concave rearwardly extendinglug 11 on the transom draw bar, bears, as shown in Fig. 1.
The transom draw bar 12 has laterally entending` lugs 12, between which :are received the forward ends of yoke 8, said yoke being connected with the draw bar by means of bolts 13, 12b indicates spring seats against which centering springsll bear at their forward ends, the rear ends of said springs bearing against the vertical front wall of the bolster, forming a reinforcing continuation of the lugshoulders 10.
f the above construction, the yoke and its carried draw bar are permitted to swing about the ends of the spring cylinder, in ord-er that 'the coupler may move laterally in rounding curves, the concave cross bar of the yoke at the rear, and the convex face 9*? on the" follower plate, readily permitting such lateral movement.v Vt'vhen the draw bar 12 is relieved of strain, as when the cars are uneoupled, the springs 111 exert their energies to restore the parts to normal or central position` so that the coupler carried by the draw har 12 will be located centrally with respect to the carry iron.
In order to avoid recessing the sub-sills to accommodate the top flanges on the bol ster, I provide vertically abutting faces 15 at the edges of the top flanges, as shown in Fig. 4.
As it would be inconvenient to arrange vertical bolts to secure the centersills in position, I provide the top flange of the boll nilster having a Cylindrical boss ings in advance ot seid bess, a ,ite bearing against said ings, a ey inder haring logs beering against t deter, said spriingy cylinder extending 3 5, mronogh said cylindrical boss, a yoke passing' throi openings in the bolster ond engagthe rear vend' ot said spring cylinder, a draw bar to which the forward .ends l ,id 'yoke are connected, said draw bar g() ing against said Ltollower plate, und which. yoke and draw ber are mounted to swing horizontally with respect to the bot ster and spring cylinder.
3. lijn a transom draft gear, the combination oit e bolster, a springl cylinder slidingly rrnonnted ther-ein, a foliower plate, a yoke engaging the rear end ot said spring cylinder and adapted to swing` horizontaiiy relatiie theret a draw bar connected to the ne :torn-'ard ends of said yoke and engaging seid Afollower plate, and center springs ar- ,sneed each side of said draw bar and heering against said bolster.
it. ln a transom draft gear, the combinam with a bolster, oit a yoke, the legs of f h entend through openings in the web ,e bolster, a draw bar connected to said a friction spring' cyiinder positioned orion spring teylinder,-and centering wett, n. the draw bar' and the boltetransom draft gear, the combinaj lindrical boss and having1 openings its vertical web to the sides of said or a spring cylinder positioned in the lindrienl boss, a drew bar yoke, the legs rhieh entend through the openings to the des et the cylindrical boss, the inner rear face oit which yoke is curved and bears ist the rear end of the spring housing, :uw bar eonneeted to the itorward ends ot rnid toilower pia'te in front of onli-nder, which follower plate is v f with a enrred bearing 'tace against which the rear end oi thev draw bar engages,
(5. in a transom. dratt geen he cmnbin-a` tion with a bolster, of a drew itil mr,
bol-ster having a eentraily dis-- Leonessa between the spring cylinder and the rear end ot the draw bar, and yielding pressure ineens between tlie rear portion of the draw bar and the bolster for normally centering the yoke and its carried draw bar with respect to the spring cylinder.
7. ln a transom draft gear, the oornbination with a bolster, ot a draw bar carrying yoke, the legs of which pass through openings in the bolster, said yoke being free to swing horizontally with respect to said blster, a separate friction spring cylinder mounted in the bolster between the rear portion of the yoke and the rear portion of the draw bar carried thereby, and springs for normally holding the yoke in a central position with respect to the spring cylinder and bolster.
8. ln a transom draft gear, a bolster, a spring cylinder carried thereby, a horizontelly swinging yoke passing through openings formed in the bolster and bearing againstthe spring` cylinder, a follower plate in front of the springr cylinder, which follower plate `is provided with a curved bearing face, means on the bolster for holdingr the follower plate in position in front of the spring' cylinder, a draw bar extension carried by the forward ends of the yoke, the rear end ot which draw bar extension is pro vided with a curved bearing face that engages the bearing face on the follower plate, and springs between the bolster and draw bar extension for centering the same'and 'the' yoke with respect to the spring cylinder and bolster.
9. In a transom draft gear, the combina tion with a bolster provided with openings, of a yoke the legs of which passthrough the openings in the bolster, said yoke being free to swing horizontallywith respect to said bolster, a draw bar extension connected to the forward end of the yoke, means positloned in the bolster between the rear end of the draw bar extension and the rear end,
of the yoke for yielding'ly resisting lengthwise movement of said drawbar extension and yoke, and centering springs arranged between the rear portion of the draw bar eX- tension and the bolster` :For centering the draw bnr` extension and the yoke with resperrt to the bolster and spring cylinder.
