Specification of [o all whom git-may concert:

HARRIXG- 'i'on, a" citizen of. the Unit (1 St ates, residing at SouthIBoston, in the ounty of Suffolk a 1rd Sti ts of Mass i provements hr Stropping the following is a specirelates to improvements in shopping devices of that class in g surface *onsists of itably prepared surface 'Th'is invention razor and while the presentembodiment of my in- 1 On." e ther: the drums f w th the reve the blad 5 simple, convenient an v ce b j m' "s i ened ni' eratetl actuating member alternat posite direc'tions and by such ro bl a'de may presented to the stro its application thereto,
arly adapted for stropety ra'zor blades and especially dge'iblade s, the device is readily double e *muamekltmarer classes of blades.
The object of my invention is to provide l d efiective stropping ans oflwhich a blade may be Otating a suitable manually opel vin op tation the pping surfacesfirst; on one face and then andjthedirection of rotation of hall be .changed automatically rsal of the blade. than; invention consists in the es of construction and in the it'aice or: sur

-''Referriiig to tl1e drawings: Figure 1 is a "plan of a"'razor stropping device embodyingmyinvention, Fig.- 2 is a front elevation-of the stropp'er; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, looking toward the right] Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken oniine 4-'l of Fig. 1, showing e in the same position as that in which it is shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view also taken on line 4.l of Fig. 1, showing the blade reversed.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, G'is a razor blade which may be of any usual or desired type and which, in the present instance, is shown as being of the double edge type. It will be distinctly understood,.however, that the device, while particularly desirable for stropping this type of blade, is not limited in but may be used for ropping single edge-blades. manner to a suitable is mounted to rock ab hearings provided in the fra 'Also journaled in suitable bearings in the frame 8,,1 provide a pair ofstropping drums, which are designated by numbers 9 and 10. Preferably, the blade andits holder are mounted between the drumsin such a manner that as the blade is rocked ton-nil fro both sides of ,both edges of the blade will be stropped without removingthe blade from the holder and reversing the same. i
To operate the blade holder and the drums, I- provide a suitable manually op eratable actuatingmember 11 consisting of a wheel iourna'led on the blade holder 7 and provided with a crank 13. This crank may be or detachably attached-t preferably the latter, in the present .instanc wheel as being provided with lateral projecting pins 1%, 14 fitting into r e respectively, provided in the crank 12. The wheel 11 is connected with the drums 9' and 10 to rotate the same and for-this purpose I employ suitable gearing pr-eferab y of the meor casing 8.-
either permanently o the wheelll and and for this purpose, e, I have shown said spur type so that the driving connection be-' journaled on studs ms the proper rotation to correspond with the positions assuinedby the blade with-respect thereto'fTThe wheel 11, which constitutes the driving member, is connected to the bladeholder by suitable frictional rotary driving means which, inthe "present instance, consists of a spring. washer 25 interposed. between the wheel 11 and a collar 26 fixed on the holder 7. The
riction of the driving proper amount of f surfaces is obtained by means of an adjusting nut 97 having screw-th'readed engageand an adment with the blade holder 7 screw 28, the head of justment locking against said nut and locks. the
which bears 7 same after it has been properly adjusted.

12 having {lj' handle cesses 15. 15.
of these intermediate "The operation" of the stropping device liereinbefore specifically describedis as follows: Assuming that the blade is in place on the holder with the crank 13 attached to the wheel l1, the user holds the frame or easing 8 in one handjor places the same upon a suitable support and with the otherhand grasps the handle 13. 'He then rotates said rhandle alternately in opposite directions,
preferably'several rotations in each dircc-' 't1 o11. Assuming that at the start, thecblade occupies the position shown in Fig. 4c. and
the handle is rotated clockwise, Fig. 2, it will be evident that the drums 9 and .10 will be positively rotated by reason of the gearing connecting the same to the driving gear 1.6,whileat the same time since the connection between the gear 16 and the blade holder? is' a-slippin'g driving connection, a slipping *action will immediately take'place, since the blade is in connection with the drums 9 and-10, and it will be evident that this frictional driving connection which'has' just been referred to forms a meansior furnishing the desired pressure of't he blade against thestrop'pingdrums.
I If now, after several turns of the handlein a; clockwise direction, the direction. of the handle'be reversed-itwill be evident that .the position-- of the blade will be reversed,
since the blade will move freely across the intervening. space between the drums until the blade-occupies the position shown in Fig. ,5, whereupon the blade encountering the drums, ceases to rotate, is held with the *p'ropenpressurelagainst the drums, and the drums are then rotated inan opposite direc -tion for, in other words, counterclockwise.
The operator continues to rotate the handle alternately in opposite directions until the blade has been sutficiently stropped, after which the blade may be removed from its qholder.
-Ha vi-ng thus I claim and desire by LettersPatent to secure'isi i a 1. A stropping device having, in combi- "nation, a pair of journaled drums, a holder for a two-edged blade mounted to rock described my invention, what about an axis "ntermediate said drums and adapted rry the opposite edges of said blade d out of contact with said drums alt ,ely, a rotary actuating element rotatably mounted-upon said holder, means forming a,sl1pping driving connection between said elementand said holder and means forming a positive driving con-' nectlon between $316. element and said drums.
2., A stropping device having, in combitively rotatedand the opposite edges of said .60 nation, a pair of journaled drums, aholder for a two-edged blade. mounted to rock about. an axis intermediate said drums and.
blade may be simultaneously held with a yielding pressure against the peripheries of said drums. I v
