Like letters in the different figures of the drawing indicate like parts. Y
This invention combines the planet' a latch and a lock, and consists of a box, A, fastened to the gatepost D, the face or front ot the box curving upward and backward for the guidance of the latch B. This I face ti-ontstoward 4the front of the line ot' fence and gate. f v I 'lhe box A contains a back-piece, a., from which projects a horizontal pin, g.
The latter passes through a vertical slot-,11, in a Yquadrant-shapedV block, b, this block having also another slot, k, a. horizontal one, being entirely open on the lower side, leaving two arms, s and t, at each angle ot' the block.
Another horizontal pin, f, projects from near the nppencorner of this block, intended as a stop to lock the bolt d when the block b falls to the bottoni of the lock A. l
Against the face of the lock b is placed `the bolt d, which is kept in place hy the before mentioned pin y, projecting ti'om the back-piece a through theblock b, and passing through a. horizontal slot in the said bolt d.
The latter has a dog, r, in its upper surface, by. which the bolt is retained or locked by the action of the pin f. Y
'l`he lower inner end of the bolt terminates in two arms, connected by a semicircula-r or lollow slot, t, for the admission of the key. j l
' The box A' has a horizontal slot, in', opening into the interior, for the insertion ot' the key l.
4The box has a. flange or projection above and below, having a-screw-hoie in each, by which the box is fastened t-`o the dank ot the gate-post.
. A recess, V, in the lower part of B, represents a catch, with a curved front, made thus for the purpose of sliding up thefront of the lock Afthe stein of which terminates in front of the lock on the gate in an axle7 having its bearingin a. box, n, screwed onto the back of the gate.
From the axle there projects upward ale-ver, O, and cross-handle, forming a ready means of unlatching the gate, as the handle or lever projects well aboe the wood-work of the gate.
The hook of the catch B has a. recess, V, as dcscribed, for receiving the bolt-head d. The back-piecefa has a hole, o, to receive the heel ofrhthe key. i
The operation is as follows:
VIn closing thegate the catch B slides up the'incline' ofthe quadrant-shaped block A; the hook thenftalling over the inner edge or" the lock, fastens the gate. The locking ot' the gate, when necessary,is done by inserting the key l into the horizontal slot in the side of the lockA, with the ward toward the left hand, and turning the lkey to-the right, the ward of the key pressing against the right-hand side of the curved slot 'i 4of the bolt d, the latter being allowed this mction by its slotg, at the same time the inner end of the key entering the slot k ofthe block b, raises the block, and with it its pin j, then on theright side ot" the dog r of the bolt d. v
lThis motion causes the pin f to liberate `the dog and allow the pressure of the key-ward to carry the bolt-head forward into the recess of the catch B. The block b then falls with its pin behind the dog Ir.
lo unlock the same, a reverse motion is set up by quadrant-shaped box .or lock A, with key l, constructed and attached to gate-post as described, in combination with the catch B, provided with the recess V, and lever O, having its bearing in box non the gate, substantially-as described.
In testimony that vI claim the foregoing catch and lock for gates, I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day ot Marcil, 1870. Y
