ICE TONGS.
APPLIOATION FILED JULY 29, 1912.
Patented June 17, 1913.
widZZazmr/zm Inventor I 4 Attorneys I... Eli: @EEEEiP 4 ya OBED LAWRENCE, OF WYNNE WOOD, OKLAHOMA.
ICE-TONGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1'7, 1913.
Application filed July 29, 1 12. Serial No. 712,195.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OBED I, LAWRENCE, citizen of the United States, residing at Wynne Wood, in the count of Garvin and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Tongs,
of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to ice tongs or a combined scale and grappling device.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a device of the character indicated which shall serve both to grasp and hold a chunk of ice, or other object, and to weigh same, so that the weight of the chunkof ice or other object is indicated while the same is lifted by the device.
The invention also aims to provide a device of this character which shall be simple, durable, compact, and inexpensive in con struction, as well as convenient and efficient in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangements of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein dis-closed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tongs. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlar d sectional detail taken on the line 33 Re erring specifically to the drawings, the device embodies a spring balance scale designated generally by the numeral 4, and including a case or hollow cylindrical body 5, and a spring rod 6 passing slidably through the upper end of the body 5 and having a cross piece or head 7 at its lower end provided with a pointer 8 passing through a longitudinal slot 9 in the body 5, a coiled wire compression spring 10 being disposed between the head 7 and the upper end of the body 5. To the upper end of the spring rod 6 is attached a handle 11, and from the lower end of the body 5 depends an ear 12.
To the body 50f the'scale is operatively connected a pair of tongs, a slide being mounted on the body 5 and consisting in two arcuate sections 13 and 13, a portion of the section 13 being cut away as designated by the numeral 14 to provide for the passage of the pointer 10. The sections 13 and 13 are provided with ears 15 at their ends and the pair of tongs or grappling arms 16 are pivoted at their upper ends between the respective ears 15 by means of rivets or pins 17 To the tongs 16 are connected at intermediate points the links 18 which are in turn connected to the opposite sides of the ear 12.
In use, the grappling device is held in the hand by means of the handle 11, and the chunk of ice or other object to be held or weighed is grasped between the tips or free ends of the tongs 16, it being apparent thatwhen upward pressure is applied to the handle 11, the tips of the tongs in engaging the object will be swung toward each other so as to firmly engage the object and the body 5 in bein lifted upward will draw the inner ends of t 1e links 18 therewith so as to provide the inward draft on the tongs 16. The weight of the chunk of ice or-other object is then thrown onto the upper end of the spring 10, and the handle 11 being supported will cause the body and rod 6 toslide relative to each other, so that the pointer 8 will indicate on the graduations along the slot 9, the weight of the chunk of ice or object. As soon as the object is.set on a support, the weight thereof will be relieved from the tongs 16 and the tongs will thus be disengaged from the object, so that this device may be employed in the capacity of the ordinary grappling device or tongs. The cut away portion 14 of the slide permits the slide and pointer to pass each other, which provides for the compact arrangement of the parts.
This device is adapted particularly for use by icemen in delivering ice to customers in order that the customers may see the amount of ice delivered, or the device may be employed in various or divers capacities, which will be apparent to those skilled in the art, such as in grocery stores, and the like.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, itwill be apparent that the objects aimed at are attained in a satisfactory manner, and that the present device provides a desirable one for the purposes for which it is designed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A device of the class described, embodying a scale including a body and a spring rod passing through the up er end of the body and provided with a ban 1e, and a pair of tongs slidably and pivotally connected to the body at one end and having their intermediate portions linked to the ing a scale including a hollow cylindrical body having a longitudinal slot therein and graduations along the slot, a spring rod passin slidably through the upper end of the b0 y and having a head at its lower end provided with a pointer passing through the slot and cooperating with the graduations, and a spring compressibly disposed between the head and the upper end of the body; a handle attached to the upper end of the spring rod, and a pair of tongs operatively connected to the body. 7
4. A device of the class described embodying a scale including a hollow cylindrical body having a longitudinal slot therein and raduations along the slot, a spring rod ass- 1ng slidabl through the upper end 0 the body and aving a head at its lower end provided with a pointer passing through the slot and cooperating with the graduations, and a spring compressibly disposed between the head and the upper end of the body; a handle attached to the upper end of the spring rod, a slide on the body, a pair of tongs pivoted to the slide, and links connecting intermediate 1points of the tongs and the lower end of t e body.
5. A device of the class described embodying a scale including a hollow cylindrical body having a longitudinal slot therein and graduations along the slot, the body having a depending ear at its lower end, a spring rod passing slidably through the upper end of the body and having a head at its lower end provided with a pointer passing through the slot and cooperating with the graduations, and a coiled wire spring compressibly disposed between the head and the upper end of the body; a handle attached to the upper end of the spring rod, a slide mounted .on the body including two sections having ears at their ends and one section being cut away at an intermediate portion to permit of the passage of the pointer, tongs pivoted between the respectlve ears, and links connecting intermediate points of the tongs and the former ears.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OBED I. LAWRENCE.
