ILIE I. RADULESCU, OF ELLWOOD CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-STER Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 17,1913.
Application filed December 12, 1912. Serial No. 736,356.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ILIE I. RADULESOU, a subject of the King of Roumania, residing at Ellwood City, in the county of Lawrence, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Steps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in extension steps for railway cars, and has for its object to provide a device of this character so constructed that the same may be raised or lowered in a simple manner when desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein an attendant may upon manipulation of a lever operate the auxiliary step and move the same in close proximity to the platform or the ground to aid the passenger in alighting, said step being adapted to be folded conveniently under the usual steps when not in use.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a car step showing the device in its unfolded position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device folded. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a bottom plan view of the auxiliary step. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the device, the step being unfolded. Fig. 6 is an end view of the device the step being folded.
Referring to the drawin the numeral 1 designates the usual steps of a railway car, which is of the usual construction.
A. pair of strap metal bars 2 are provided, and are suitably secured to the risers and steps, which effectually brace the same, said straps having their lower ends terminating in eyes 3 positioned under the forward edge of the lowermost step.
A shaft 4 is supported in the eyes 3, said shafthaving its outer end supported in an eye 5, said eye bein carried by the outer edge of the vestibule end (3. The shaft terminates at its outer end in an arm 7, said arm being provided at its outer end with an eye 8.
A lever 9 is provided and is formed at its lower end with a loop 10 which pivotally engages a pin 11 carried by the vestibule end 6, said loop terminating in a curved arm 12. The curved arm 12 has its lower end provided with an eye 13 which interlocks with the eye 8 carried by the arm 7.
The inner end of the rod & terminates in a right angled arm 1 1, the lower end of which terminates in an arm 15, said arm being disposed at right angles to the arm 14:.
The arm 15 is secured in any suitable manner to the under surface of the auxiliary step 16, said step being provided with a riser 17 and to whicn the arm 14 is secured in any suitable manner. A pair of strap metal bars 18 engage the riser l7 and step 16 and have their upper ends provided with eyes 19 which engage the rod at adjacent the eyes 3 of the bar 2.
Secured to the vestibule end 6 are spaced lugs 20 and 21, said lugs being adapted to engage the lever 9 to hold the step in its lowered or raised position.
YV hen the step is in its folded position, the lever engages the lug 21, and when it is desired to lower the step the lever is removed from engagement with said lug and is moved forwardly and into engagement with the lug 20 during which time the shaft 1- has been rocked through the medium of the arms 12 and 7, thus positioning the step in convenient relation to the plat-form or ground.
What is claimed is The combination with the usual steps of a railway car, of a rod pivotally supported by the lowermost step, said rod having an arm arranged at right angles thereto, said arm terminating in an arm arranged at right angles to the first named arm, an auxiliary step including a riser, said step and riser being secured to the respective arms, eyes carried by the riser and connected to the rod, said rod having its outer end terminating in an arm, an eye formed upon said arm, a lever having its lower end provided with a loop, said loop being pivotally connected to the vestibule end of the car,
saicl loop terminating in a curved. arm hav- In testimony whereof, I afiix my signa- 1ng' an eye formed therewlth adapted to hire, 1n presence of two wltnesses.
