provernents in Cigar-Lighters, of which the l Y following is a specification.
This invention relates to cigar lighters.
The object of the invention is to provide an extremely cheap, efficient and simple form ofmechanical cigar lighter of that type which employs a toothed metal wheel in connection with some form orl composite material that produces a spark when the one is rubbed quickly over the other one.
The invention consists in the several novel features of construction, arrangement and combinationof parts hereinafter fully set forth and particularly/delined in the claim.
In the drawing furnished herewith, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cigar lighter, F ig. 2 is a detail, central, longitudinal section thereof, F ig. 3 is a detail, vertical, cross section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a supporting device forming part of the cigar lighter. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are views upon a greatly enlarged scale.
In said drawings the casing of the cigar lighter is represented at l0, and the same comprises a sheet metal receptaclell, and a cover 12, tted thereto and arranged to cover the open end thereof. The receptacle is formed on its outer face, with a bead 13, which provides a shoulder acting as a seat t'ory the lower edge of the cover 11. In the open end of the receptacle 11, is removably secured a supporting plate 14, having upwardly bent side flanges 15, that lit snugly between the side walls 16, of the receptacle 11, and the latter is formed with an inwardly projecting bead or rib 17, near its upper edgey that forms a seat for the supporting plate 14. The latter is held in place in the receptacle solely by the frictional contact between the vflanges of the supporting plate and walls of the receptacle. rlhe plate- 14, is formed with twoholes in which are secured two tubes 18, 19, that project down into the interior of the receptacle 11, and are preferably secured to said plate by means of a drivin@ iit, and if desired their upper edges may be curled over as seen at 20, to engage with the upper face of the plate 14.
.The tube 19, acts as a wick tube and receives the wick 21, the upper endoi:l which projects out through the open end of the tube and the lower end of which is coiled within the receptacle as shown in Fig. 2. ln use some volatile `tluid such yas gasolene, benzin or alcohol is poured into the receptacle to saturate the wick.
The tube 18, contains a sparking block 22, composed ot some well known spark producing composite' material and above the said block or material is a toothed metal wheel 24, journaled upon arpin 25, which is secured in ears 26, projecting up from the flanges 15, of the supporting plate 14. rlfhe block 22, is held in frictional contact with the toothed wheel by means of a coiled compression spring`27, arranged within the tube 18, and held in place by a screw 28, thread-` I ed in the lower internally threaded end of' the tube. As the block 2.2, wears down, the screw' 28, is adjusted to maintain the block 22, in contact with the toothed wheel 24.
In operation the toothed wheel is turned sharply (in the direction of the arrow) by the thumb of the person holdin the receptaeleand sparls'are thereby pro uced which ignite the volatile fluid at the projecting end of. the wick. After the cigar lighter has been used the flame is'extinguished and the cover placed upon the receptacle.
The construction herein' set forth 'is eX- ceedingly cheap to produce, making it possible to sell such cigar lighters at an eX- tremely low cost, whereby the same may be used for advertising purposes, the sides of the casing forming a convenient means for displaying an advertisement. The supporting plate 14, not only acts as the support for the tubes and toothed wheel, but acts as a cover plate for closing the open end of the receptacle 11, thereby preventing any unnecessary escape of the gases from the vola tile fluid contained within the receptacle.
I claim as newl and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination of a receptacle open at one end, a cover plate removably secured in the open end of said receptacle, a thumb operated toothed wheel pivotally carried by said cover plate, a pair of tubes carried by said cover plate and extending into said receptacle, a block of igniting material Supported in one of said tubes andyieldingly pressed against said toothed Wheel, and at my name at Chicago, Cookncounty, Illinois, wick extending through the other tube subthis 15th day of February 1912. stantially illinr the ulterior of the recepw w taole und adrlpbterl to he saturatedwth 2t PFER NLUKIRCHLN volatile liquid, as nml for the purpose set lin the presence offorth. HARLES O. SHERVEY,
In witness whereof l have hereunto signedl` FANNIE l". RICHARDS.
