To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Hosea E. Vorrono, a citizen of-tl1e United States, and residing at. New York, in the county of New York atfd State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic l)ampcr-Controlled Outlets or Flues for Drying-Kilns, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to drying-kilns, such as that shown and described in U. S. Letters Patent, granted to V. L. Emerson, March 19, 1895, and numbered 535,982, and the invention which forms the basis of this application, is an automatic regulator or dainper for the discharge line or tines of dryingkilns of the class described and claimed in said patent.
T he invention covered by said patent relates to an improved form of drying-kiln designed particularly for drying lumber, but useful in drying any other material by heated air, and it involves a construction whereby sutficient moisture, derived from the substance or material being dried, is automatically retained, during the initial stages, to keep the exposed surfaces of said substance or material from becoming too dry, and to maintain such surfaces in the best condition until the internal moisture therein had been extracted, after which the heated and moisture laden air is automatically discharged through a flue or fines in the side or sides of the kiln and my invention relates particularly to the said discharge tlue or hues, and to the provision of an automatic damper for controlling said discharge.
My invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the acco1npanying drawing forms a part in which the separate parts of my invention are fully designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a transverse section through one side wall of a drying-kiln of the class described, and showing my improvement, and Fig. 2 a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, and on an enlarged scale.

In the practice of my inventionI place in, or at the discharge opening of the fine b a frame 0 to which is secured a supplemental -frame (Z having an outwardly and down wardly directed shield (Z and in the top portion of which is pivoted, hinged, or otherwise mounted, a gravity damper e.
The discharge opening of the flue b is oblong and rectangular in form, in the construction shown, and the damper e is mounted on a rod 7 having bearings in the opposite end portions of the casing (Z and said rod is also movable longitudinally through said casing, and one outer end portion thereof is provided with a thumb nut g and the charged through the fine or fines b, any
number of which may be employed, these tlues may be arranged in any desired manner, and the discharge opening thereof may be arranged at ditt'epent points or ditterent heights in the wall a, and the damper or dampers 0 will be automatically opened according to the pressure within the kiln chamber, as will be readily understood, said damper or dampers, but one of which is shown, being tree to swing on their supports and the opening thereof, and the extent of said opening being regulated by the pressure within the kiln.
If so desired at any time, the nut 9 may be tightened so as to draw the rod 1'' outwardly in the direction of the arrow :12, an so as to bind the damper e on the end wall (Z of the casing (Z, and in this way the said damper may be locked in an open position if desired, but when the kiln is in 'opera-' tion the damper or dampers/e are preferably allowed to swing freely.
The shield (P, as will be understood, forms a protection for the damper e, and prevents any interference therewith, either by the elements or otherwise, and while my invention is not'limited to any particularcom struction of the kiln, a reference to Fig. l of the patent referred to, will show or disclose the form of kiln in connection with which I prefer to use my improvement.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a frame plate provided with an opening, an outwardly and downwardly extending shield secured to said plate and provided with end walls connecting said shield and plate, a pivot rod mounted in said end Walls, a vertically disposed damper pivotally mounted on said rod for normally closing the opening in the frame plate, a shoulder on said rod engaging one end of said damper, and a securing nut on said rod outside of the end wall of said shield for clamping the damper in adjusted positions when desired.
