Referring more particularly to the drawing, the letter A represents the ties of-the track, B themeeting ends of a pair of rails and Gmy improved joint chair. The joint chair comprises a base plate 1,'which is of a length suitable to span a pair of the ties A, the base plate being formedon one longitudinal edge with inclined fish plate 2 which is adapted tooverlap one of the base flanges of the rail's'and rest against the webs thereof. It will be seen that longitudinal or lateral movement of the joint chair is prevented by the engagement of the spikes 13' in the ties, and movement oft-he rails in any direction is also prevented by the engagement ofthe pins 13 in the openings 12 in the rails. The upstanding flange 3 on the base plate 1 serves as a guide for the elan'ip'mg member 7, and

also prevents lateral spreading of the sections of the joint chair.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawing, it will be seen that I have provided a joint chair which will scurelyhold the meeting ends of a pair of rails, and which also com prises a minimum number of parts, so that it may be cheaply manufactured. Having thus fully described my invention what I desire to claim and secure by Lettors Patent is: f 1. In combination with the meeting ends of a pair of rails, a joint=ehair comprising a base plate having a fishplate thereon for engagement with the base flanges on'one side of the rails, said base plate also having an upstanding flange formed on one longi-' tudinal edge, said-fiangecterminating short 'of the ends of the base plate, said base platebeing formed with notches between the extren'iities of said flange andthe'ends bf the base plate, a clampingonember comprising-a base plate adapted forslidable engagement between the firstmentionedbase plateand the bases of saidrails, said clamping memher being formed .with a fi sh plate adapted for engagement with the base'flanges on the opposite sideeot the rails,'tl bas plate of said clamping member being also pro-.
